Wondering what the Producers Guild of America Awards are? I guess the title gives it away, but let me just say that producers nominate top television programming and then vote on their favorites. Kinda like the Academy Awards and what not. This year, in order to give special attention to television, the PGA announced its small screen nominees separate from their film nominations. The nominees were eligible from last fall to May 31, 2006 (new fall programming is not on the list). While Fox and NBC received the most nominations, the listings are pretty mainstream with stuff like House, Lost, The Office, and Arrested Development all being nominated for awards. What about Rescue Me, Battlestar Galactica, Veronica Mars and The Closer? Grrrr. Interestingly, in the 'Variety' category, Jay Leno and The Daily Show are left out in favor of the opening ceremonies of the Olympic games. And, oddly, 60 Minutes is lumped in a category with a bunch of reality shows. Awards will be given out January 20.
And the nominees are...
Best Comedy
Arrested Development
Curb Your Enthusiasm
My Name is Earl
The Office
Weeds
Best Drama
Grey's Anatomy
House
Lost
The Sopranos
24
Best Variety Show
Ellen Degeneres
Conan
Letterman
Real Time with Bill Maher
Olympic Games Opening Ceremonies
Non-fiction
The Amazing Race 9
American Idol
Dancing with the Stars
Project Runway
60 Minutes

Just another stupid awards ceremony that doesn't have any clue of what is good on T.V.

With the exception of Arrested Development (which is the PC thing to vote for these days), it seems this is just another popularity contest. The highest rated shows aren't necessarily the best produced. Yawn.

Would you really consider Arrested Development "mainstream"?

I am not clear what your problem is with the nominee's list? Which part? All parts?
I'm not too into drama shows, but the shows nominated for BEST COMEDY seem very appropriate. I'm not sure that I could come up with a better list of nominees. Perhaps Earl could be switched out, but overall that is a very sound list of nominees, as those were the best shows on television this year.
