Rudolph, The Red-Nosed Reindeer is one of my favorite Christmas specials, along with It's A Wonderful Life, A Charlie Brown Christmas, and Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town, but a few things about it have always bothered me. Like the way Santa treats a lot of his workers, from the flying reindeer to his elves, he just seems a little harsh and mopey.
This video after the jump explains it further. It's like a little investigative compilation of scenes from the special to show how much of a jerk Santa is. Is this fair? Or did the person who put it together have it out for Santa and only pick the worst parts? I would say it's fair, because there's a lot of proof, from almost every scene in the special.

Whoa! Deja Vu! I was just watching this with my son this morning and got to the part where Santa thrashes Rudolph's dad for hiding the nose, and I said, "Hm, I guess Santa's a jerk!"
Also, as for this movie, what's with the misfit elf and the misfit Jack-in-the-box having a seemingly gay sound to their voices?

It bugged me so when Santa told Donner that he should be "ashamed" of himself. Then he tells Rudolph he's afraid he can't get his sleigh off the ground without Donner, not even expressing concern for the missing trio. Then he has the nerve to use Rudolph for his nose to keep up his reputation...I never liked this Santa...only watched it for the snowman, Rudolph, Yukon Cornelius, Snow Bumble and most of all the misfit toys especially the doll!
Now Mickey Rooney's Santa in Santa Claus is Coming To Town is my kind of Santa. I can never get enough of that show and watch it even today many decades later.

Santa was a jerk, but I always hated his greedy wife who wanted him to develop diabetes or have a heart attack so she could inherit his slaves (elves, if you prefer) and move somewhere warmer. All her "Children want a fat Santa" bull was so transparent.

I think the point is that you can't change the world. Yes, there are jerks out there. Santa wasn't just the only jerk. Donner was for hiding his son's nose. The other young reindeer are jerks for making fun of him when they were friends with him just seconds before that. Hermie's boss is a jerk, too. Nothing can change that and it's corny but the moral is be yourself. Oh, and, does anybody understand why his nose always makes a weird noise. Also, if he could fly so well, why did they walk everywhere. I'm just saying.

I always thought this Santa was kind of mean. But this movie is an exception to most kids movies. Mickey Rooney in "Santa Claus is coming to town" and Tim Allen in "The Santa Clause" are great examples of what Santa should be like.

I think it funny that he gained about 100 pounds in just minutes, the scene where he was looking at Rudolph's nose when he figures out that he can guide the sleigh, he is skinny, pants loose. The elves get his coat and all of the sudden he is more round.

I couldn't agree more about this being a really bad portrayal of Santa Claus. I thought he was short tempered and grouchy. I don't think kids should see this movie at all.

I just watched this last night, and I did notice that Santa was firm. Of course he has a lot of responsiblity, there's no one to fill his shoes. Nobody remarks that Santa's only care was for the children, and he did get fat and jolly when the problem was solved. Of course in those days people could be direct, firm, unhappy, and have all human emotions without being diagnosed or critcized. Lets focus on the good, yeah!

I think people go way to far in analyzing this stuff. Just watch the darn movie. If it offends you, then turn it off.

Give me a BREAK! Instead of spending hours on this whining video, why don't you go out and get a job that matters and have real responsibilities and stop feeling victimized by every non-sugar word that comes from peoples mouths! He was mean to me, he made me feel bad, waaa waaa waaa. If you spend more time working to DO good and less time finding the BAD in others you'll be happy and might actually contribute to our world!

Lol, I liked #9's comment about leaving the fireplace lit so Santa could get burned and save Rudolph.
I always thought Santa was an ass in this show, but I liked to watch because of Rudolph and all the other fun characters. My kids watch it now and have asked why Santa is such a grump and that he shouldn't act like such a scrooge. My 6 year old said he should keep a lump of coal for himself. Then he saw the movie "The Santa Clause" and said "Mrs. Claus must have spanked his bottom and sat him in the corner so he'd be more nice.I'm giving him a big plate of cookies with very cold milk this year for being a nice Santa." Lol, my son cracks me up.
Also to answer #9, I've eaten deer meat and it was good.I like to boil it until cooked then chop it into little pieces and fry it with some onions and cilantro. Then I eat it on a corn tortilla and squirt some lime on it and salt and some home made mexican salsa. It's good!

"Deer meat"? Could she possibly mean VENISON? [It's like beef (cow meat), pork (pig meat), etc. Red meat seems a lot less appetizing if you have to know the name of the donor species.] The trick to venison is that it is better if it comes from a younger animal and the people who field dress it and later process it needs to know what they are doing. If not, the meat can take on a very strong and gamey taste - not to most people's liking. It will even smell up your house when you cook it!

Is this Christmas show going to be outlawed now because some clown that has nothing better to do decided that Santa didn't fit his or her ideal of the perfect Santa?
People, it's a cartoonish program that was made back in the day when big brother didn't stick his nose into every aspect of our lives. Ahhhh, I long for the good old days.

An interesting thought. I guess I never realized how mean Santa was. But still I'd watch it just because I like some parts of the movie.

Funny, As a child I never understood why Santa was so nasty. I always thought that he was stressed out because Christmas was coming. Rudolph's cuteness drove the attention of Santa's nasty attitude away. I guess that's why people watch the movie. Why would anyone depict Santa as such a nasty guy anyhow? The writer probably wasn't a Christian. Was it a subliminal message to Christians?

I've shown this movie to my kids and grandkids over they years. I have to say I've never really cared for this one or the clay-mation Christmas shows. The old cartoon style ones were a lot more entertaining.

Will you people chill. The guy has millions of scheduled deliveries to get off his sleigh in a very short time. We're talking about millions and millions of little children that he's trying so hard to please all in one frickin' nite! Think that might stress you out!
