In another display of confidence in a show that isn't exactly lighting the ratings world on fire (see also Friday Night Lights, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip), NBC has given a full season to the Tina Fey sitcom 30 Rock. At first is looked like they were just ordering a few more scripts, but they gave the green light for a full season this afternoon.
But this move is actually ratings-oriented, because the show got its best ratings to date last night, in its new Thursday slot between Scrubs and ER. It was up 25% from last week.
So now we'll get full seasons of two shows about the behind-the-scenes goings on at a late night comedy show. Three if you count Saturday Night Live, and four if you count the possible web showings of the SNL Friday night rehearsal. I still think Studio 60 is the better show. 30 Rock isn't bad (and Alec Baldwin is funny as hell), it just isn't incredibly funny, which stands out when you're a straight-ahead comedy. But I do watch it every Thursday night, and it's not really fair to compare a half hour comedy with a one hour comedy/drama, even if they are about the same thing.

Alec Baldwin is genius in this show. It's the only reason I watch.
This show is totally going to take off now that it is on Thursdays. Glad to see it get a full season.

The reason the ratings went up was because of CSI being a rerun.

i watch both shows. i think 30 rock edges studio 60 a little bit. Just because it doesn't feel like it's trying so hard to be meaningful. i like both shows. but i enjoy 30 rock slightly more. i can't really put my finger on it. but it's probably because of alec bauldwin and tracy morgan.

30 rock ... well ... rocks!
Tina Fey is very dry and even likable. And you know she has a hand in the writing. Alec Baldwin is a genius. And Tracy Morgan is just the right amount of crazy (even in real life, with another DUI ... d'oh!).
And you are right, it isn't fair to compare it to the left wing, pro-feminist, upper 300 reading, MENSA dramedy that is Studio 60.

30 Rock doesn't make a huge impact when I watch it. I enjoy it, laugh, etc. But it's just another show.
But then, I find myself talking about it for the rest of the week. Describing a bit, or repeating a joke.
It's a strange effect. I'm glad it got a full season.

It's a good decision. 30 Rock isn't all there yet, but it might turn out to be great.

At the beginning of the season I would agree with you, but now I have to say the opposite.
The last two episodes of 30 Rock have been *hilarious*. I mean, top-shelf comedy. The writing, the acting, are perfect. Alec Baldwin is amazing. Tina Fey is adorably self-deprecating. But Tracy Morgan is the breakout - SNL never even HINTED at what a consistently funny comic actor this guy is.
Studio 60 is a great show, but its still West Wing: LA, for better or worse, and they really need to fix the Harriet character, and learn that even if you are doing a dramedy about comedy the comedic references still need to work.

Great news. 30 Rock is a hilarious show. Tina Fey is great...and Alec Baldwin deserves an Emmy nod already for his supremely funny role. And I've always liked Tracy(even though some find his character grating...thats the point!). NBC needs to get back to its playbook of actually letting shows find its audience. Seinfeld and Cheers were ratings disasters when they first came on the scene many years ago, and they turned into ratings powerhouses after a few or more seasons on the air. And I do like Studio 60, but what skits they actually do as part of the "show" have been laughless and lame(although I loved Juliette Lewis hosts Meet the Press). I know Sorkin excels in the dramatic aspects of the series, and those are very good. But if you are going to do a series about the behind the scenes world of a late night COMEDY sketch show, it needs to be a little more funny than what it has been IMO.

I gotta say, out of the four episodes on last night's "premier" MUST SEE Thursday night, 30 Rock was the funniest of the bunch. To my sensibilities, 30 Rock gets better every episode.
I AM THE THIRD HEAT!!!!!

Yay! I love this show (even if it is wildly uneven).
It could be Tina Fey & Alec Baldwin and I'd watch. They are both such smart winning actors.
And anyone who puts Judah Friedlander in a primetime show gets my vote for bravery!
But they really need to ditch that Ally McBeal girl. The show works so good withouth her in it.

Bob, Bob, Bob, i really just don't get it.
30 Rock is the better show simply cause it SUCCEEDS at what its supposed to do. Its funny and makes ppl laugh.
Studio 60, although helmed by great actors, FAILS miserable cause its just too damn BORING and the script is going nowhere. I really wanted Studio 60 to succeed, as i am a fan of everyone involved, but come on, we have to face the facts, its a major let down.

Could the improved ratings be a result of the exposure and free episode offered on iTunes? The freebie was a good episode (Blind Date), although I like them all--it's a hilarious show.

I can't believe that this show hasn't caught on. I watched this week's episode and laughed the entire time. I can't say that about ANY comedy over the past several years. Each character is perfect. The biggest problem is that the show has so many great characters (and cast), it's hard to fit them all into one 30 minute show.
NBC will be crazy to cancel or not pick up this show. If it makes it, we will all look back on it like we do early Seinfield episodes today -- but 30 rock is funnier. NBC has a marketing problem not a creative problem with this show. LONG LIVE TINA AND ALEC !!!

30 Rock is a great, funny show. I gave up on Studio 60 after they made a couple from Ohio look like complete idiots because they didn't know the who's on first routine.
It will be a challenge for 30 to catch on in the ratings. But Alec Baldwin likes challenges, he’s climbed Kilimanjaro, he's showered with Greta Van Susteren.

I wasn't expecting it to be that great, but 30 Rock is hilarious! It gets funnier with every episode. I'm glad NBC seems to remembers that comedies like this generally take at least a year to catch on with the general public. I don't see it as a STUDIO 60 counterpart, it's more like a modern-day MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW.

30 ROCK is the best new comedy...the best comedy in a while to grace the airwaves. A 2nd season is a must. Give it time NBC(stands for Needs Ballsagain Comeon!!!!). Stick w/ this solid series. So MUCH potential...but you a-hole execs won't to give it so little time TO DEVELOP...TO BUILD ITS AUDIENCE.
Can I please run your network programming decisions? You guys would be back on top in a year or two! But, go ahead, keep running the super innovative "1 vs.100". Bob Saget has always reeled them in. I'm sorry, but I'm laughing my ass off from that comment---Bob Saget has never been funny(except on ENTOURAGE).
As if there is not enough shitty reality shows(seriously, the only reality that is associated w/ these shows is that they usually suck!).
30 ROCK is great.
