(S03E09) Suck . . . my . . . lobe. -- Shirley Schmidt
Back so soon? Gosh, it feels like I just wrote about Boston Legal two days ago.
Now that the second part of this Boston Legal 'event' (according to the network) has aired I can reveal what happened at the end of the first part. Lincoln Meyer attacked Gracie Jane in her hotel room after she ridiculed him on her television show. Then, he abducted Shirley Schmidt and took her to his 'safe-room', also known as a locked room in Lincoln's basement.
In this week's episode (SPOILER! SPOILER!) we found out that Gracie Jane survived (which is good, because she does a dead-on Nancy Grace parody) and Shirley Schmidt survived her kidnapping (END SPOILER! END SPOILER!). So, no one died, and no one got hurt. Well, Lincoln did get injured, and I'll talk about that in a bit. And Denny's feelings were hurt, but that's an entirely different story.
Please tell me that I wasn't the only one that saw Lincoln's injury coming about a mile away. When he revealed to Shirley the means of defense for his safe room was I the only one who thought 'Yeah, Lincoln is going to get shot by his own weapon. Stupid git.' If I had one problem with this episode that was it. I mean, it was telescoped telegraphed so poorly that it was no surprise whatsoever when he shot himself. Saying that, why the hell was ABC saying that the last five minutes of BL weren't to be missed? To gain viewership? Those types of promotions piss me off more than they intrigue me.
Back to Shirley's kidnapping. Man, she is one tough broad. Even though Shirley said she was afraid she certainly didn't show it. She was calm, collected and reasonable. She even put up with Lincoln's ukulele playing. I would have crumpled after hearing one Christmas song. I had no problem that the abduction didn't go the extremely dark route that I thought it would go. How could you not think it was going that way; Lincoln is downright creepy! His Christmas display was frightening enough to convince me that he was a psychopath.
Over to Alan and Jerry's murder trial. As I've said before, I'm getting a little tired of Jerry and I would like to see less of him on the show. That being said, I like Jerry the trial lawyer over Jerry the defendant. When cross-examining he's smart and efficient. Plus, according to Jerry himself, he's a living lie detector, which gives him the added benefit of feeling a person out. If he is going to be shown handling cases, then keep him on. If he continues to squeak and jump then keep him away for a few episodes. Oh, by the way, Alan doesn't win the case this week with one of his famous over-written closing arguments (Alan's words, not mine). It's all Jerry this time around.
It was good to see the younger associates work together this episode in order to find Shirley. I won't include Brad and Jeffrey in that group, because they really hate each other. It seems that Paul Lewiston will now become their wrangler of sorts. This was shown in the scenes for the next episode in which Paul assigns Brad and Jeffrey to work on a case together. Let's see if this new case makes them bond or gives them the opportunity to beat the crap out of each other.
Finally, the nicest moment of this episode. It was between Denny and Alan, after Denny showed jealously at Alan and Jerry's new found relationship. It was all about friendship and how it was hard in these times to find one true best friend. When all was said and done Allan admitted that he loved Danny and that he was his best friend. It was nice to see a scene like that between Denny and Alan on top of the usual five minute male bonding session at the end of each episode.
That's all for this week. Next time around God, white pride, and a cross-dresser. In other words, the usual for Boston Legal.

imho, best episode of the season. it balanced the sentimentality, quirkiness, and a downright great Jerry (last season's fortes) with the sharpness of the first season's "traditional" character interplay. i was left running to the store for season 2... that said this comment is over^_^

I hate Jerry, his charater is just so overused now.
And Paul has nothing to do so he is now playing the school pricible? Whatever happened to his druggie daughter?
Good episode through.
Shirley Schmidt might have died at the end, that would have been interesting. There was that rumour of her having a stroke but they say it was heartburn or something. If it was really a stroke she might have wanted to leave the show.

Is Denny's character overused? Is Alan's? Jerry did some excellent character development last night.
Anyway, my new favorite word to describe Alan and Denny's relationship is psuedohomosexual.

Richard: I expected lincoln to take the arrow from the crossbow... but the manner in which it happened surprised me.
Whats the over/under on how long itll take alan to get into denise (julie bowen)'s pants... seemed like he was almost there before shirley walked in towards the end of this episode...
Some of the best (funniest) moments to me this season has been from that interplay... starting with Shore's head leaning around a corner when denise confided to Shirley that her, uh, libido, was heightened by grief.

One thing that bugged me on this episode (and this is such a small thing but it just chaffed me) was that Brad said "I was a Marine, I'm practically a Navy Seal"
Now, no Marine in his right mind would EVER admit to being someone in the Navy. Never.
I refer you to Keifer Sutherlands line in "A Few Good Men" (which is a very truthful statment of how the Marines view the Navy: "No, I like all you Navy boys. Every time we gotta go some place to fight, you fellas always give us a ride."
Other than that I found this episode delightful. I agree that perhaps we have seen too much of Jerry this season but I do love his character. However, I did view this episode as a closure to his arc. Lets see if that comes true.

Help, I missed Tuesday's Spoiler Episode and ABC doesn't show it on their website. Any ideas? I can't live with Boston Legal! I appreciated reading
