(S02E10) We go the horror route this week as Bones returns from its Thanksgiving recess. This time around Booth, Bones and the squints over at the Jeffersonian Institution investigate the body of a decapitated film student. Along the way they delve into some ghost stories, share a brief romance or two, and tip their hats to a recent horror classic.
That classic would be the 1999 low-budget hit The Blair Witch Project. For those who never saw the movie it was a fictional account about three film students who get lost in the woods while filming a documentary about a local legend. They are terrorized throughout their trip by an unknown source and all eventually disappear, yet their film equipment remains intact. The only difference between Blair Witch and the video on Bones was that someone actually died here.
My problem here is this: it looks like there never was a Blair Witch Project made in the universe of Bones because, after seeing the footage, they would've realized it was all fake and the mystery could have been solved in five minutes, with the credits rolling after ten. But then, what would we have done for the remaining fifty minutes? Read? Talk to our families? What kind of heathens do you make us out to be?
Actually, they did realize that it was all a setup after about 50 minutes (and they call themselves scientists!). And even though I, and I'm sure many of you, knew that the video was a setup it was a fun ride to see the squints come to that conclusion. During that journey Booth and Bones came upon a buddy of the headless student, who said he would never go back into the woods where they got lost. Booth also encountered the dead man's girlfriend, who was going a bit mad because she thought her boyfriend was killed by a ghost that roamed the woods. As she went slowly crazy she kept saying 'so much blood, so much blood'. That was because her boyfriend was pouring gallons of cow blood over her. Um, okay.
Also during the investigation they met the dead man's brother, who had a similar history to Bones' upbringing. Once again, I go back to my excuse of not watching the first season of the show (I've got to rent it) but is this the first romantic interest Temperance has shown to someone? At first she was definitely awkward when she met him for coffee; it reminded me of someone having a date with Data. But, she seemed to warm up to him as the show continued. In the end, when he was (SPOILER HERE) arrested for killing his brother in the woods (END SPOILER) she showed genuine emotion at being heartbroken.
This relationship brought up something new in the Booth and Bones relationship. Seely specifically defined what type of relationship they had: they were just partners. This allowed him to give Bones a hug after she found out the guy she liked was a murderer. Now, I wonder if Booth's mention of them just being partners, and his clandestine relationship with Cam (which isn't so clandestine anymore since Bones knows) are just fences blocking how he really feels about his partner. Will those fences break any time soon? I hope not for several seasons to come.
Moving to another relationship, it looks like the one Jack and Angela have is now in full swing. How they care for each other was shown in subtle ways this episode and I liked it. No need for them to be seen sneaking into the utility closet for a snog (do they even have utility closets at the Jeffersonian?). I like them as a couple, and I hope they continue on that path throughout the show. I just don't want their relationship to distract from the main focus of the program.
That's all this time around. We'll be back in two weeks with a new episode directed by David Duchovny.

The only good thing I can say about this episode is that they didn't mess up B &B - together or as individuals. The mystery itself wasn't bad either.
Just about everything else I like about the series went to the dogs in this one.
This show was supposed to be about the value of science - a sorely needed topic in this about to be medieval country.
But we now have squints who see ghosts - Cam, Hodgela - and suddenly we are back with the rest of them in torture & superstition land...
How can anyone go "awww" when Hodgela get popcorn to watch - what for them becomes a snuff movie? Angela was usually portrayed as the empathic one (except when it comes to war and she becomes a blowhard). There are many reasons this coupling bothers me - but one of them is the creepy factor. From the cadaver rose, to the gushy scene in the cadaver soup bath tub to now eating popcorn and watching snuff movies?
Just lovely!
I am still sticking with the series, but this was an all time low. It's worse than the pilot. that one was merely awkard, this was vile and stupid at times.

great acting! well, as always. I really love the part where Brenn shed a tear & loooked all hurt in the restaurant scene, whe she broke the news to booth that she knew his relationship with cam & when they hugged.
