(S03E09) This episode was just way too fast for a partial-season ender. While we got answers for the bulk of the episode, there are definitely some questions left hanging around unanswered. But I'll get into those later.
My first thought when Veronica was running away in the opening scene was that it was unlikely that her pursuer was a girl. I just couldn't see her fleeing away from one of the feminiazis, no matter how menacing she was nor the fact that I, for one, would run away from that she-bitch in a dark dorm hallway. Yiieee.
Boy, way to make Mac's reappearance seem ... insignificant. Not even a clever joke about how she's been so out of the picture the past, oh, most of the season. I will say that I didn't realize how much I missed her character until she was back, and I hope she's not kept away too much when the show returns (which I imagine won't be until next year). Great Mac shirt quote of the show: 'Ask me about my STD.'
How many times is Veronica going to get a date rape drug? The poor girl's going to dehydrate from not trusting a stray drop of water from anything other than her home faucet. Hopefully she kept a bunch of those great rape coasters (baddum-chh!)
Dean O'Dell listening to Olivia Newton-John in his car. Classic scene. Clearly anyone learning this would see that putting a bullet in his head was the only sane thing to do. My guess is it's Tim the TA, pissed off that the Dean let the fraternities back on campus, since they're the ones dangling all that temptation in front of his now ex-girlfriend Bonnie. Obviously Tim's been keeping tabs on Bonnie's conquests, with all the circled Pi-Sigs on his board-o-clues.
Now, as for the loose ends -- which I admit we have plenty of time to still wrap up -- some things don't yet add up:
- Why were the girls' heads shaved (and then the hair kept)?
- What was Mercer doing raping the girls anyway, and why would Moe help him if he wasn't raping the girls? Was Moe just into the hair?
- If Mercer's show was a call-in show, how did he field requests if he was playing a recording? Didn't anyone catch on that he wasn't picking up the calls?
- What's the significance of there being no hair or semen at the rape scenes? As far as I could tell, Mercer had hairy legs (the nasty unicorn horn pull-out scene), so how would he be so easily cleaning up after himself?
- What did Dick to do "screw up" like he said in the first episode? Maybe he made mention of it, but I can't recall.
So now we're left with the dean murdered, eggs all over his window. Did he take out his cheating wife or her co-conspirator? I guess we'll need to wait a while to find that out, but until then it's hard to make a good guess. Meanwhile Logan will be putting some hurt on Mercer at Neptune PD.
Quote of the episode:
Veronica: "Great job, Dick. I'm sure you won that debate."
Logan: "Well, he's a master debater."

Wow. This episode was on *fire*! The way Moe (the RA) played into the equation was perfect. I'm glad they didn't make him some sterotypical bipolar type.
I'm interested to see how the "perfect murder" papers figure into the Dean's rather unfortunate situation. I'm also really worried about that bottle of scotch.
(still waiting for the fitzpatricks to reappear)

wow, if the rest of the season is as good as this episode, we're good, folks! i'm not all that stressed out about VM falling out of LoVe, i'm glad they broke up, i just hate how the writers lead up to their break up. atleast with Duncan we had a sense of closure, nothing like that with Logan :-(
i hope this means the writers will revisit the relationship, and hopefully the second time around V wont frak it up. cant wait till the next episode!

Did Mercer say something like "slave" or "prisoner" to Moe? That reminds me of the guard/prisoner experiment that Logan and Wallace had in their class- I think I remember Moe talking about how damaged he was by doing that experiment. Could it be that Mercer was his guard and just maintaned the control?

That episode just...wigged me out. The Veronica-in-peril went on for too long.
We knew a Logan/Veronica breakup was inevitable, because shows have to do this. His near-crying made me sad, though. I guess it worked better to just bite the bullet and get it over with at the start than drag it out until the end the way I expected. I wonder if he'll stay on "regular" status now that he's no longer the boyfriend.
I freaked when I saw Veronica drinking that damn tea. DAMMIT GIRL WHERE ARE YOUR COASTERS?!
Nice setup with killing Dean O'Dell. Maybe his salary can go to paying for Wallace or Mac or Piz or Parker or Weevil to show up more. God, they are sorely missed. I'd be willing to have a shorter season- 13 or 16 shows or something- if that just freed up more money for regular actors to be paid (not that that'll happen). I saw someone else say elsewhere that Veronica comes off as cold without any friends to talk to, and boy, is that the case.
This episode put me through the wringer. NO MORE GHB-ING VERONICA! NO MORE!

The hair was in Moe's closet. When Veroncia was in there and she pulled down the hammer, all sorts of hair started falling around her.
And, good segway into the next mystery. Again, Veronica and the Dean seemed like they had found mutural respect for each other, so all of this why is Veronica trying to solve this case mumbo jumbo talk can go away.
Good episode to great episode, but when Veronica is in trouble, does she always call Keith, not that i'm complaining.

Too many loose ends unanswered, and Veronica didn't have her usual "this is what happened" explanation... hope they address some of the plot holes in the next couple episodes, otherwise, this is a bit of a letdown. after watching Veronica drank the drugged drink yet again for the god-knows-how-many-times in the series' three seasons run so far, i'm really getting sick of the show dealing so much with date rapes or just rape in general (although last season's reveal of Cassidy being the real person that raped Veronica was a great surprise.) I'm ready for the next big mystery...will the CW renew the show for a 4th season, or wait, who killed the dean?

I don't know. This whole episode and the revelation of who the rapist was felt kind of... meh. And what's the point of adding fan-favorite Mac to the regular cast when she hardly appears at all? (Was there a scheduling conflict for Tina Majorino with another TV show or movie she's appearing in?) Every season, they keep adding a bunch of side characters, and then Mr. Thomas explains that they are on a limited budget. Well, DUH! -- you keep piling on a whole bunch of actors, who need to be paid! Here's a crazy-ass idea, Rob: Scale the regular cast down to a few: Veronica, Keith, Logan, Wallace, Weevil and Mac (because there needs to be at least one female character besides Veronica, and Parker is just NOT cool). Lamb, Piz and Parker do NOT need to be regulars, sorry. Why does there seem to be a problem with this particular series with keeping the cast line-up simple?

Oh, yeah, I forgot Dick. Dick doesn't need to be a regular either. Frankly, I fail to see what he brings to this series anymore, or why he should even be on this show. Maybe they're trying to make him out as a younger Owen Wilson type, but I don't think it's working.

the best scene BY FAR when when you see Logan taking the bat to the police vehicle and right as you realize what the hell you think hes doing, they cut to him entering the prison and you know hes going to exercise some echols justice on the two young lads. i was on the fence about logan (as an actor and character) but that might have won me over.
since weevil found the body i hope hes a bigger part of the next arch. great episode and i really hope it stays for a 4th-5th-6th season.

From what I understand, Mac's been gone because Tina Majorino's been away filming the second series of Big Love, so hopefully she'll feature more in the rest of this season.
I figured Dean O'Dell was going to be the one to die, just because he was the only person you could murder and have a convincing cast of suspects - the Lilith House girls, the professor, his wife, anyone who featured him in their perfect murder paper... It's a shame, though, as he was a nice character.
On character rotation, I think we'll see much more of Weevil, Mac and Lamb in this second arc, and probably less of Piz, Parker and Dick, though I think every episode should have a scene with Veronica and Dick being snarky at each other, because they're just fun.
And I can't see Logan going anywhere - even if their relationship is over for now, he still clearly sees himself as Veronica's protector, regardless of whether she wants him to be, though it's the sort of development that could take his character to some pretty dark places.
Do all of Rob Thomas' villains like to talk and explain their actions, though? Admittedly, it is a feature of the noir genre, but Aaron, Beaver and now Mercer all had long soliloquies to explain their actions while threatening her.

Am I the only one who thinks that Veronica's criminology professor killed O'Dell? Or is that just too obvious?

I think we can assume that the screw-up that Dick was referring to was his failure as a brother to Cassidy, especially as it came on the heels of his unconvincing "he never cared about you" speech to Mac.

I really enjoyed that episode. I might have even uttered an audible "Hell Yeah" when I saw the Logan/cop car interaction because I could see where the scene was going.
I hope the perfect murder papers figure into the dean's death.

I liked the episode well enough. There's always something good about a Veronica Mars. But, I have a question:
Wasn't Mercer in Mexico with Logan during one of the rapes? I probably missed something somewhere, but ... well, I missed it so I don't know what's going on.

I never really felt the LoVe, but after seeing Logan smash that cop car and end up in the same jail cell with the 2 offenders, I think I LoVe them together. Wish Mac would show up more often, she's excellent!
I will be bereft waiting for this show to resume!

This plot device was used most memorably in the first Scream movie, which brought back the horror genre into popularity.
In Scream, the initial suspect is the boyfriend, and the audience dismisses this out of hand as too obvious from the start, and the plot seems to confirm this. But the twist is that the person who was dismissed initally turns out to be the bad guy.
Same technique with Mercer. He is dismissed in an earlier episode and the viewer forgets about him. It's a nice way to throw off the viewer, especially since the internet allows people to pool evidence and theories together, making it harder for the writers to suprise anyone.
I for one did not see it coming, and that means the writers did their job.

Sebastian, I think what is confusing is that some of the rapes were faked and some were real. The Feminazis faked Claire's in an attempt to get the fraternaties shut down. But some of the rapes were real, like Parker's. I still don't get how no semen or hair was found at the scene. Hopefully they will clear that up in the next couple of episodes. Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong here.

So when is Veronica going to start packing some heat? First season she's stalked and threatened by crazed killer, second season threatened by gangsters and then stalked and threatened by mad bomber and this season (so far) by serial rapists.
That weak stun gun just isn't cutting it and Backup never seems to around anymore. C'mon, even Keith packs a gun.
Just one of those things happening to me and I'd be getting a concealed carry permit as fast as possible.

Condom = no semen
Nair = no hair since it only lasts a couple of weeks and unless the guy was into a sport other than swimming or cycling it might go unnoticed.
