(S01E08) Despite the fact that I think pretty much everyone was sharing the same hunch about who the real Ice Truck Killer is, how cool was that final scene? I'm so pumped for the rest of this season now. We'll come back to this though.
One of the big things I really loved about this episode is that Dexter seems to finally be realizing that in order to make it, he needs to start humanizing himself a bit more. He needs to start giving into the things that once made him feel powerless and accept that fact that even he needs to find a real connection with someone. Clearly it's Rita and the fact that Dexter was finally willing to have sex with her (and she didn't find him to be "empty" in bed) was a big step. He definitely cares about this woman, despite what his inner monologue says, and the only thing that worries me now is what happens when she finds out what Dex does?
Obviously he doesn't want anyone to know who he is. That became clear from his conversations with the shrink, Dr. Meridien. I love the time and patience that Dexter put into his pursuit of the doctor though. He made appointments, broke into his office at night... really made sure that this guy was someone who deserved to die. It was almost comical when after a botched sexual experience with Rita, that Dexter realized he couldn't kill Meridien yet because he needed another therapy session. That was odd though if you think about it. Dexter was actually taking advantage of someone's skills fully knowing that he was going to kill him anyway.
Rita's ex-husband Paul is still around. He's a total jerk too. Anyone else pick up on all the subtle jabs he kept throwing at Dexter? These two are going to end up going at it. And Dexter will win. It's just a matter of when and what Paul does to push Dexter over the edge. He's like the grown-up version of that bully who used to harass Dexter as a teenager. Dexter never got to kill that kid and now it's like he's being given a second chance.
LaGuerta's story is starting to get really good as well. She's completely setting up Captain Matthews and the district attorney when it comes to Neil Perry. LaGuerta finally took Dexter's advice and she grilled Perry -- he admitted he lied after she shook a decapitated head in front of him. The guy was terrified of it. Despite this new info, Matthews and the D.A. want to push forward. The case is going to fall apart, so it's a total power-play for LaGuerta. She'll probably end up with a promotion by season's end. She's smart.
OK, back to the prosthetics doctor. His name is Rudy right? I vaguely remember Tony Tucci calling him Rudy in a scene from last week's episode. I don't think his name was used in this one though. Regardless, he and Deb are hitting the ground running. Too bad she has no idea why he's chosen her. Once again, how cool was that last scene? He responded to Dexter's personal ad on Craig's List and then retired to his built-in freezer... to chop up some body parts. Creepy. I can't wait to see how this turns out. He's going to use Deb against Dexter too. That's the only thing I'm not looking forward to.
What did he say in his response though? Something like, "Patience Barbie, we'll share a cold one some day soon?" This is going to be good.

Great episode.
Not surprised that the prosthetics doctor appears to be the ITK.
Was surprised at Dexter's physicality while taking care of the shrink. Man, he just whipped him around. Didn't know Michael C. Hall was that strong.

I guess I'm slow or just way to into the show but I was totally blown away when they revealed who the real Ice Truck Killer was. I was assuming that the love interest with Debbie was just expanding her character. I'm glad I didn't see it coming though, it was really a good tv moment for me.

Shows like DEXTER are bringing Showtime on par with the venerable HBO.
Michael Hall is channeling Michael Ironside these days and I am enjoying the Miami exteriors! Makes me want some mofongo and a mojito.

Dwacon said everything perfectly. I'll hold on the mojito though - don't like to trim my drinks before I partake!
ITK v Dexter will be a good ole time when it actually happens. I hope they will resolve his story this season. I think if they stretch it into S2 it will be too drawn out.
Laguerta used to bug me but this latest political manuevering is great to watch!

As someone who read the book (Darkly Dreaming Dexter) I was surprised a bit by the reveal... they'd followed the book closely early on, it's great that they threw a couple curves in the past few episodes. Props to Showtime/The Writers/Whomever for going above and beyond the Jeff Lindsay's wonderful setup.

WOW, nice episode.
Didn't expect that doctor to really be the ITK, I thought it was just too obvious in the last episode.
Hopefully we'll get some backstory about him in the coming episodes.

The thing about Dexter is, he's not a real sociopath. He doesn't think he needs a connection - he already has one.
Dad screwed him up BIG TIME.

Great episode.
And Jon, you were close. What he wrote, with suitable Dexter-like narration, was:
"Barbie, Be Patient. One day we'll share a cold one."

Also, just noticed that, when he was looking at the original message, Dexter's e-mail was listed as "frozenbarbie@hotmail.web," but when he replied it was "frozenbarbie@hotmail.com."
Yes, I have too much time on my hands.

Dexter with the psychiatrist cracked me up, Im really lookig foward to the next episode where the doctor and dexter meet. The doctor gets to see dexter with his "mask" on, I wonder if dexter will notice the doctors dark passenger? Its sad how Deb is going to be the victim.

Oh yeah btw, i've always thought the ITK was either Dexter's real brother or real father. And now that we know the doctor is the ITK i guess he must be Dexter's brother. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

Ahh, I knew the doctor was the ITK. Simple fact that there was no one else who could've been. TV logic

No surprise with the ITK but I like to know it now and see what happens next. Maybe Dex will offer Rita´s hubby as a gift to the ITK because he can´t kill him? Who knows... YEAH, Rita and Dexter - hot! Loved the therapy sessions! The face of the Dr. (Meridian?) was priceless after Dexter confession.

I kind of saw the twist at the end coming, but my thought was - if the doctor is the ITK, then the show is making it like 1 in 4 people in Miami are serial killer. I understand why they need to do this of course, but just like nip/tuck, it's kind of disappointing to see the killer revealed.

I love this show more and more. Michael Hall is awesome, and the writing is amazing. Glad to see he is growing close to Rita. Very different show, much needed in the sea of mostly formulaic shows and weak comedies on network tv. I think Showtime is pretty close to equalling HBO in original programming. Right now HBO has little to offer without Rome, Sopranos, end of Deadwood, etc. Michael Hall, great job

Great show!!! I was not surprised to see that the doctor is the ITK, but very very dissapointed. He's sooo hot, and poor Deb! The other thing: how sick is it that Rudy first chopped up tony tootchi's (not sure how to spell that) limbs and then later also made him his prosthetics? One more thing: does anyone know the name of the actor who plays rudy? I can't find it anywhere.

Perfect show. I love that the the doc cut off Tucci's leg and then was the guy to make him a new one. That's messed up. With Battlestar Galactica moving to Sunday nights next year, the other 6 days are going to excruciating.
