(S02E09) Now, before you get excited, this was not a X-Files themed show where Booth and Bones discover an alien skeletons and then go all Mulder and Scully to find the spaceship that they came in. No sir, the spaceship in this episode is a beer vat that holds the skeletons of two twins who died at the hands of the Grave Digger. This is where this week's very well done episode of Bones begins.
After last week's somewhat disappointing showing they really righted themselves. Taking a more serious tone than they normally do, this week's episode focused on the race to save Bones and Jack from being buried alive by a serial killer. Many of the subplots were pushed aside (although there was a brief look at the secret relationship between Booth and CAM), and the skeleton's were barely addressed. It was all replaced with high emotions and guesswork.
Let's talk about the burial scenes for a bit. As I've said before, I didn't see the first season of Bones, so I don't know how Jack and Bones acted together previously. But, the characters looked to have a great deal of chemistry and trust for one another while trying to survive. I also think they are kindred spirits channeling MacGyver. I mean, look at what they cobbled up while waiting to be rescued:
-
Bones performed meatball surgery on Jack to relieve pressure on his injured leg;
-
Jack analyzed the dirt that surrounded them with perfume and a SLR 35mm camera;
-
Bones was able to send a text phone message to Booth by hooking her cell phone to the car horn;
-
Jack created a CO2 scrubber in an ashtray;
-
Bones used the explosives that push out the car's air bags to propel them out of the vehicle.
Gosh, with some thread, bubble gum, and a paper clip they could've have created a time machine and gone back to prevent the tragedy. Seriously, all of that stuff worked this episode without seeming corny. I also liked seeing both Jack and Bones out of their element, which is normally very controlled.
Over to Booth and the rest of the squints of the Jeffersonian. Other than Cam, they were all out of their element. Seely, who is seen as being pretty level-headed in most cases, was shown as being quite frustrated with the rest of the Institutes's team of crack scientists. It was mostly due to the fact that they weren't thinking outside of the box. Booth had to practically shout at them to stop looking at the situation as a bunch of numbers and equations and start to make some guesses. He was particularly hard on Zach, who he was relying on to interpret the text message Bones and Jack sent to his phone. Luckily, Seely's rant got to the young graduate student and he was able to solve the mystery of the message, which allowed the two doctors to be saved.
A few more highlights to mention from this week's episode:
-
Benito Martinez, who plays David Aceveda on The Shield, appears this week as KNR (Kidnap-Negotiation-Release) expert Thomas Vega who wrote a book on the Grave Digger. Who's with me in the belief that Vega is the Grave Digger? He just seems to meet all of the requirements.
-
I thought that the Grave Digger would be caught this episode, but he wasn't. I actually liked this, because it allows the story to continue somewhere down the line this season (well, I hope they continue it). If Thomas Vega appears again we'll know something is coming up.
-
We had a couple of revelations this week. In addition to Cam and Seely's romance, Jack revealed that he was extraordinarily wealthy (don't know if that was revealed last season) and he was head-over-heels in love with Angela. Well, duh on that! Finally, Angela came to realize that she really cared for Jack. It looks like the relationship we thought wouldn't happen will resurface in the next few weeks.
Gosh, I hope you enjoyed this week's episode as much as I did. No new episode next week due to the 'Eat Your Weight in Turkey, Fall Asleep in Front of the Television" holiday. So, I'll see you in two.

Great episode, very emotional. I'm with you on the author being the grave digger. Why would Bones (intended victim) be his/her choice unless he/she was close to the case and felt threatened. Maybe the season finale will have the grave digger taking Jack, now that he/she knows he's rich.

For the record, yes, Jack's extreme wealth was a topic for discussion on more than one episode from Season One, and in a twist, his family provides a lionshare of the funding for The Jeffersonian, making Jack, in a way, the true "boss" of the place.
I believe now that he's told Bones about his wealth, all of his coworkers are aware of it, save the new boss, Cam.
I agree that the show was a bit heavyhanded in "suggesting" that former Agent Vega is the Gravedigger, but I would hope that he's merely a red herring, otherwise I'd have to say it's sloppy writing that will lead to a disappointing conclusion to this plot.

Yes, it was revealed last season that Jack was very wealthy -- he didn't want the rest of the team to know because he thought they might see him as less committed to the science. Zach lives (or at least lived then) in an apartment over the garage and knew the "secret," but didn't know enough to even know it was a secret (typical for Zach). This also helps explain why Jack has been goading Zach this season to "grow up." He has a connection to Zach beyond just work; they are a close equivalent to roommates.

I LOVED this episoe because it was so strong on featuring the inter-personal relationships of the characters. Jack has pretty much kept his wealth a guarded secret. Jack has also not told much of anyone about his very strong feelings towards Angela - certainly not Bones. It's a "Duh" moment for the viewer, but not so much for his co-workers. They know there's something cooking, but they may not realize how deep his feelings really are. Angela's reaction to Jack's fear of sleeping was a big revelation concerning her slowly evolving acceptance of Jack's feelings towards her. I was so glad when he accepted her invitation. It was great to see Benito. I enjoy him on The Shield. I had the same exact reaction - I suspected that his character is the Grave Digger. I, too, hope this story line is continued at some future point. This is one of the best episodes for a while, but I like most of them quite a bit - guess that's why I've watched from Day One. The ensemble cast is terrific.

For most of last season, nobody but Zach knew about Hodgins' wealth, and he only knew because he was living above the garage on Hodgins' estate. (The "garage" was basically like a summer home type of house.)
Hodgins confided in Booth about the truth because he didn't want to make a mandated appearance at some party where his family members - who control the funding for the Jeffersonian - would be present. He didn't want the others to find out his connection and so he asked Booth for his help. (Booth had him called away to work on a case before he could go.)
Not sure if Angela knows yet - I've missed a few eps this season. But I think this is the episode where finally they all found out, including Bones.
This was one of those rare TV eps where I actually fear that we'll lose one of the regulars. Obviously not Bones, but it was conceivable that Hodgins could have perished under those circumstances - everything was stacked against him throughout the ordeal and all his storylines seemed to be resolved or left unfinished for maximum sorrow.
And pulling him, rather than the lead character (which would have been more dramatic), out second didn't bode well for his future.
Glad to see he survived. Hodgins is a fun character: "I'm King of the Lab!"

This was quite possibly the best episode yet. I really think what is making this season of Bones so good is that they're developing the supporting characters more and taking some of limelight off of Seely and Temperance; not that they aren't interesting characters, but if they are the focus all the time they will grow stale too quickly. I’m especially enjoying the Jack and Angela relationship. I wasn’t all that sure at first, but the chemistry of Michaela Conlin and T. J. Thyne is just so good it makes you believe this relationship could work in real life. While I enjoyed the fact that the characters were out of their element, I thought Boreanaz was, as usual, over the top in his performance. He’s plays Seely like a clichéd version of an FBI agent: tossing people around, threatening their lives, etc. By the way, I totally agree with you: if Vega isn’t the Grave Digger, then it has to be that frigid assistant, or both of them.

It was the strongest episode of the season so far, with a nice blend of the character's inter-relationships and some nifty detective work and science. Only discordant note for me was that drippingly sappy musical passage while they pulled them out of the ground.
I am guessing that the Gravedigger is the female journalist/co-author of Benito's book.

I think with so few suspects shown this episode to be the Gravedigger, and both so obvious, that it will have to be someone else entirely by the time they revisit the case. I think the writers are too smart to telegraph it so easily and yet not just wrap it up in that same episode. Even if they had plenty of suspects introduced, they wouldn't play it out over more than one episode unless they knew they had a really intriguing hook to catch the audience by surprise. Because too much time for the audience to think it over and they're bound to get it before it airs. So I don't think these two - together or alone - could be the Gravedigger.
But if I'm proven wrong, it won't be the first time; probably won't be the last.....

I figure it is one of three people right now from the guest-stars. Either it's Vega, the reporter, or the former FBI agent. Or, it could be someone totally different. Wouldn't it be wierd if it was someone at the institute? Zach maybe?

For me this episode showed that Zach is an equal in the lab, not just an intern. He needs to finish his dissertation and become a full member of the team on equal footing. We all knew this but I didn't think Zach knew how valuable he was to the lab.
The thing I thought was odd was that only the people from the lab were the ones digging them out. It looked like no one else came running down to save them.

Both my husband and I thought that Vega was the Grave Digger, and when I saw the pissed off look on his face when they rescued Brennan and Jack, I knew it was him. Love the relationship with Angela and Jack - I can just see them making a romantic dinner together and Jack blowing up the kitchen! I so love the books by Kathy Reichs and I'm glad that the series is taking off too.

Loved it, loved it, loved it. I sat here with tears streaming down my face when Jack was declaring his love for Angela to Bones and then again when he told Angela that he was afraid that when he woke up he would still be buried and running out of air. Very emotional, very touching. Booth and Bones have such chemistry - I loved the scene in the church at the end. And I love the fact that Booth is a practicing Catholic. It makes him more human. As for Vega being the Gravedigger, maybe, but that girl with him knows who is, I believe. Just one of the best shows so far on Bones, a lot better than last week's episode!

Loved this episode, best one so far. Had tears in my eyes as Jack and Bones said their good-byes to each other before they were rescued. I knew they would be rescued, but the lead up to it was so brilliantly written, believable (yes!) and emotional. What a class show compared to others of the somewhat same genre. Characters that are not carticatures, professional women that do not wear low cut, cleavage popping attire for work, and romance that underlying and thoughtful.

This episode was special and amazing. I barely watched the first season of Bones, but from the few I've caught this season, these writers know what they are doing. I could not say how much I loved this episode better than Pamela and Tricia. Loved Seely going all crazy - shows how much he cares for his partner and the lab (he thanked God for all of them - so sweet). Best scenes were Jack in the car crying (I wonder what he wrote on the paper (to Angela?), Seely running in the gorge with a panicky look on his face, Seely and Bones in church. Great, great episode. Will pay more attention to this series.

Actually, I did enjoy the previous episode more than last night's (Vegas over Grave Digger that is). Yeah, Vegas was light and this was a nail biter.
But at least there the premise and pay off were balanced. here they build and they build and it all goes to...couple B.
The ending sequence was the weakest yet (yeay, team?) and if Hodhins plays a little girl one more time, I'll rescind my liking for him.

I think the best of possibly both seasons, the characters are becoming much more demensioned and defined. Love all of them, but definitely no Bones/Booth romance, at least not for a good long while. HOWEVER, I love the Jack/Angela romance and I think it's being done so honestly. We all know how icky a stale office romance can get, and Angela is justified in her caution but they're such a fabulous match. I was almost blindsided by the fact that the Gravedigger wasn't revealed but truthfully I didn't care- it would almost have been an anti-climax. Can't wait to see where and when they continue the plot lines introduced last night!

I like the respectful way that Seely Booth's religiosity is presented as a normal part of who he is, and not as an aberration.

I was very impressed with this episode. Especially the twist about the Grave Digger not getting caught or identified just yet.
I have a random question: Can ANYONE tell me what the song is that's playing on Bone's car radio in the beginning when she's just waking up and realizing she's buried in her car???
