On the Howard Stern show today, Artie Lange announced that he signed a development deal with FOX. It's like the usual development deals you hear about; Artie will get paid a lot of money to either help develop sitcoms that he will star in, or make himself available to act in someone else's project if FOX thinks he's a good fit for it. Like he mentioned on the air, it's one of the sweetest gigs in show business. For now, he'll still be doing Howard's show, because there is not sitcom vehicle imminent; but if a project does come along in ten months or so, he'll have to leave.
It's a new thing for Stern and company to deal with; in the past, the people who have been in his employ have had limited career potential outside the show (yes, Stuttering John Melendez got hired by Jay Leno. But that was because Leno wanted to bring a Stern vibe to the Tonight Show. How's that working out for him?). But Lange came to the show with previous credits (Mad TV; The Norm Show; various movies), and the show has only upped his profile; he recently headlined a sold-out stand-up gig at Carnegie Hall. The chances of him leaving have always been pretty good. Wonder how Howard is going to deal with it if he does leave? Maybe he'll just bring Jackie Martling back...
Anyway, good for Artie; it's nice to see a good guy like him get what he deserves for once. Of course, the way he's been gaining weight lately, let's hope he survives long enough to get that sitcom from FOX.

Good move for Artie, he's a funny guy, no one cares about Stern's show any more. Hopefully Stern will retire soon and fade away in the Hamptons.

Hurray FOX!
Hope it means FOX is getting foxier & will make more deals like this to sidestep next season's 'flailing cycle'
Cause in a choice between baseball players and Artie, both may be ball-scratchers...
...but original comedy gets my vote every time!

[btw, can you believe they actually call it their 'flailing cycle' ?! http://www.mediaweek.com/mw/current/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003380942 ]

Am I the only one that sees "24" snapping Artie up immediately as a new cast member? His physical condition screams CTU.

Hey Jeff,
Congratulations, your post goes down as the stupidest thing I've heard(or read) today. Now one cares about Howard's show, huh? Sounds like you are one of these O&A drones. Let's see, over 5 million people signed up for Sirius within one year of Howard joining, that doesn't sound like no one cares. How about Howard TV, huh? It's also very successful, and I think it's amazing. The show is funnier than ever. Stop making stupid blanket statements about things you know nothing about.

Sorry Neal: I agree with Jeff-and I have Sirius Radio and I listen to the show. It's lame. As far as your comments on the "millions of happy subscribers" why don't you head over to Forbes.com and read the current story "King Dethroned" which highlights what a business failure the Howard experiment has been. Can you say "Stock Dive"?

Hi Johnny,
I don't mind personal opinions, it's blanket statements like Jeff made that upsets me.
What is it about the show you find lame? You are the only person I've spoken with who has been a long time fan of Howard's (I'm assuming you are a long time fan, otherwise your opinion isn't as valid) who has heard his show on Sirius and doesn't think it's better than ever.
As for "Stock Dive" it's not a valid statement. It's only a dive from the unnaturally bloated numbers that occurred right after Howard announced he was going over and everyone got stock. If you look at the numbers before Howard and now, there is no stock dive at all.
People have been trying to predict the end of Howard Stern since he started, but he's still here and most of those people are gone.

I am one of those people who stopped listening to Howard Stern. His schtick is old and everyone has copied him. Just not orginal anymore and his interviews used to be cutting edge. Sirius gives me a broader choice and that is what I pay for.

Hi Marthe,
Absolutely you are correct. Sirius is more than Howard. If you don't like his show, that's your opinion, and I respect it. With Sirius you can find many other things, and that's what great about it. I do think though that we can all agree that the one thing Howard did do was bring name recognition to Sirius. Before him, no one was really talking much about Sirius, only XM. Now according to many marketing studies, Sirius is the more recognizable satellite provider, and the one that people think of when they thing of satellite radio.
We'll see after this holiday season which one did better.

Name recognition is good, but all things considered, XM still has the more subscribers.

Howard is the man. His show is 1 million times better than it was on regular radio. Enjoy your censored "free speech."
Enjoy your Oprah and O&A on XM.
I cant wait until I get attacked for expressing my opinion.

I've been listening to Howard since I was in high school ('89). I've also heard nearly every show that he's done on Sirius. I can say with confidence that the show has changed, and not for the better.
For some reason, it's all about who is fighting with who lately. I know Howard has always had the occasional fight with Gary on the air or what have you, but now it seems like we can't get through a single day without a 25 minute argument about nothing between two or more staffers. It's annoying. I wish he'd get back to the games like Stump the Booey, Win Fred's Money, Homeless Jeopardy...even the Wheel of Sex. The constant, jr. high bickering is annoying.
Oh, and good luck, Artie. Here's hoping he gets a King of Queens type of show.

Dave,
That's your opinion, and I respect it, but it's just that, an opinion, not fact. I think the show has changed as well, but for the better. There are things I may not enjoy as much as others. Personally I feel he has too many guests on nowadays. Sometimes it seems like guests for the sake of guests. I like it best when they just goof around with each other, talk about pop culture, or their personal lives. Some guests are good, but I wish they were more picky about them. However, if there is an interview or something I may not be into, I turn the dial, wait, and then check back later on. Sirius has a lot of great content. However, because I may not like one aspect or segment, I'm not going to bash the whole show or "throw the baby away with the bathwater" as they say. The things that are great about the show now are so much better then the things that were great when they were on censored radio, so I am forgiving if something isn't my cup of tea, and then enjoy the things like the Artie Roast, Baba Booey Roast, Girls riding the Sybian, Artie fighting with Crazy Alice, Richard and Sal painting their privates, and all the other great things that could never have been done or done properly before. All hail King Howard!!!

Neal: I certainly understand the concept of changing the station if I don't like what I'm hearing. When Artie and Alice start screaming over each other, that's exactly what I do.
I'm not saying that the show as a whole is terrible. I enjoyed the roasts that you mentioned, and I like Sal and Richard a lot (ok, maybe not Sal). I just wish we didn't have to hear about who is mad at who every single day. It's almost as exhausting as a phone call from Eliot.
I do agree with you about the guests, however. I remember at one point, maybe a month or two ago, Howard read a news report saying that he couldn't get good guests anymore (incorrect, of course). I wonder if he isn't trying to prove something lately. Just this week he had Barbara Walters, Martina Navratalova, Richard Simmons...Sometimes the interviews are fun, but I really like hearing Howard, Robin and the crew talk about TV or other aspects of pop culture or their lives. That's what's most fun for me.
And as for Sirius, I love it! I have literally listened to ONE DAY of terrestrial radio since December of '05 and it was horrible. I had to use my wife's car for the day, and didn't have my iPod. The FM stations were so annoying and unlistenable I just drove around in silence. Long live Sirius!!

The show is better than ever in my opinion. I really hate when people say, it's changed, it's not shocking anymore, it's the same thing over and over...it's funny though, the very same people are apparently still listening. It's the single most original, shocking, hilarious radio show ever, hands down. Even all of the people who have copied him don't get it, they're not funny. I've heard all of his cloans and given them all a chance but to me they don't have that certain something to set them apart from Howard and the gang. I mean if I hear anything having to do w/ a homeless guy, a midget, a lesbian, a stutterer, bashing celebs, phony calls, I'm like, ok, I've heard this on Howard since forever, try something original. I've listened since 87, I've gotten 10 people to get Sirius, some not even fans of Howard, and they all say the same thing, i can't turn of Stern. He is the greatest and to be totally honest, when he retires the only thing i'll listen to on the radio will be his replays and sports and music. Hi Fred. Oh, and who said Elliot Offen is boring? Are you nuts? That's gangsta talk!!!

XM is just not going to be able to cut it -- I see them being bought by Sirius rather than the other way around. Sirius isn't the company giving away subscriptions for $2.99/month to people who try to cancel, XM is. Oprah isn't even ON the Oprah station but for 5 minutes a month. O&A are Howard clones, or at least everything they do on FreeFM still is a copy of Stern -- I'd rather listen to JV & Elvis, they have way more personality and don't NEED a Jim Norton to make the act actually work.
Yes, the Stern show has gotten more "gay" lately and they need to bring back the games. I don't know how I feel about the Master Tape Theater since I have no desire to listen to NYC traffic from 1989. :) Still, I really don't see Stern going away any time soon -- he actually stands for to his words, well, except for the whole Friday Show thing. :)

Personally, I get real tired of the Sybian. Just real boring for me. And, sometimes, the show does drag a bit. But, it is what it is. It's Howard. No, it's not gonna be ground-breaking anymore because most of it, he's already done. But, I still find it pretty funny. Crazy Alice, Elliott Offen, and Beetlejuice still amuse me greatly.
I would've never purchased Sirius for myself. The whole 'pay-radio' concept was beyond me. I received it as a gift last year for Christmas. Not only could I not see myself without it now, I bought my father one in May. He's hooked, too (albeit, without Stern)
