(S02E08) We're eight episodes into the second season of Bones and we finally hit one that wasn't really that good. Oh, it was watchable, and it did give actors David Boreanaz and Emily Deschanel a little more scene time together than in previous episodes. It just seemed, I don't know, a tad flat and out of sync.
Perhaps it was because Bones and Booth weren't really interacting with the rest of the "squints" of the Jeffersonian Institution, since their investigation led them to Las Vegas. When they all get together they mesh extremely well. I just didn't see it in this episode. Even the scenes of the squints working solo were a bit monotone. In the end, I guess you could say the episode was a bit dull.
At least we had a maggot and beetle-infested body rotting in the Nevada desert.
There were a few highlights. For instance, Bones played two people this episode. First she was definitely playing the robotic forensic anthropologist this time around. When she was caught counting cards at the Blackjack table I immediately thought of Data in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "The Royale". She was just oblivious to everything around her.
Then, Dr. Brennan portrayed a slinky 'Sugar Momma' for Booth when they went undercover to infiltrate an illegal Fight Club-type boxing club. This was so out of character for Bones that I couldn't believe she pulled it off. She said she was channeling silent film actress Clara Bow (or at least how she thought Clara sounded) when she put on a New Yawk accent and slinked around.
That's really about all the highlights I can think of this time around. I found the case kind of uninteresting, and the ending incomplete. There were also some open plotlines that were never closed, like Booth meeting an old Gulf War friend who seemed to be a gambling addict. Seely talked to him in one scene, and then we didn't hear about him again. I found that kind of odd. Also lacking was the character development we usually see. Sure, I guess you could say that Jack's attempt in pissing off Zach was a look into the graduate student's psyche, but it really just seemed like filler.
I just didn't feel the love this time around. Hopefully, I'm not the only one. Next week: Jack and Temperance are buried alive. See you all then.

I have to agree with you there one this episode. It was disappointing to me personally. I felt it was out of sync but I did enjoy some moments. Booth's reaction to Brennan's dress, Cam's reaction to Booth zipping her dress and saying "Hot", also Brennan saying "Our Squints". There are somethings I loved but overall it was a filler-for the shipper-episode.
It wasn't just you. So looking forward to next episode.
Trend: Light episode, deep heavy episode, light episode ..and so on.

I have to agree with your assessment of tonight's episode. I thought Booth and Bones looked great in their undercover garb, but the story was kind of weak and disconnected. And to be honest with you, I halfway expected to see Grissom at the crime scene in Las Vegas! That would have really been cool, wouldn't it? Anyway, next week's episode looks pretty claustrophic, similar to when Nick was buried alive on CSI!!!!! Am I sensing a theme here?

Oh, come on this was the episode about FIGHTING even one of the squints punched the other to show even "spock" can be provoked... thought it was an interesting episode...I usually miss it so tonight was a real treat! I really enjoy all the technical chat in the midst of sheer "thuggery"....

I disagree with you. I loved the story - all of it.
B&B in vegas, Jack & Zack reunited and being both at their best - everything enjoyable and fun.
The episode reminded me a bit of the first episode I loved in this series - Man in Bear. There too, B & B were away, talking to Squints via computer, and Zack & Jack had their finest moments in fighting over the UPS girl.
Only this one had better B & B

Seeing booth in the fight (as well as earlier in in the suspenders) reminded me of Angel again. I agree the episode was kind of flat but it was interesting to see Brennen playing something so different from her normal personality. I think it was easier for her with playing next to Booth.

I hadn't seen an episode yet this season, but since there was no 30 Rock last night, I figured I would flip between Bones and Jericho, but stayed mostly with Bones in hope of coming across some in-joke geared at the CSI gang in Las Vegas.
Seemed like they did their best to totally ignore the forensics department of the local cops.
And btw, watching Jericho during the commercials was all I needed to get the gist of the whole episode. Didnt' speak much to this week's episode of that show.

I thoroughly enjoyed the episode. I love the humor of this show. It was great to see Boreanaz back in fight mode. Enjoyed seeing Booth standing nose to chest with the other fighter. Fun to see Zach punch Jack in the nose. I especially enjoyed the chemistry of David and Emily as the 'engaged' couple. Emily slinking around like Clara Bow was a fun take on the character.

There was another Whedon reference in there too, Sophia Crawford, who was stunt-buffy was in the fight right before Booth's. She had blonde hair in pig tails and was fighting in a very Buffy-like style.
Did anyone else notice that there were at least two scenes of Booth and Bones together in a hotel room with just one double(Queen?) sized bed, while they never showed "her" room (or if it was hers, then his room). Am I reading too much into this? :)

MrAkai,
totally noticed the queen bed too. Pretty funny. The stunt double for buffy was a good pick up, I knew something was up with that fight but couldn't figure it out. Overall it was a "cute" episode more to get booth and bones cozy.
And Richard K! did you also see the Royale episode was on G4 last night or was it that fresh in your mind?
the whole Bones as a card counter was hilarious and the fact she kept going back was dropped subtly. Was it a great episode? No. but it was fun to watch.

Overall it was a filler-for-the-shipper episode. that said, I think this show works best when the ensemble cast is used to the fullest. The forced Booth/Brennan is getting very stale, very fast. And Clara Bow? Whichever writer came up with that one needs a head dunking -- she'd have been more believable with a Bacall reference.
They had a great opportunity here to get into Booth's past with the casino trauma *g* and the old army buddy who was a weak analogue of what Booth might have become if he didn't stop gambling. Too bad they didn't take it where it could have gone -- and that's this show's worst failing. For all the meaty tidbits they sneak in the follow-through is always weak.
One of these weeks I'm going to accept that this show is strictly for the 12-16 year old B/B shipper set and turn it off. The squints keep me coming back each week -- not the leads.

While the forensics took a back seat to the undercover personas of Booth and Brennan in this episode, I still thoroughly enjoyed it.
I think the Vegas trip served a purpose in the B/B relationship in that it put Bones on more level footing with Booth: she was able to present herself believably in a social setting--even if she had to pretend to be someone else to do it--and she earned Booth's astonished respect with both her undercover work and her quick thinking.
The episode also provided us with an Angela-Hodgins break after last week's "just friends" speech, and showed Cam getting jealous when Booth said of Brennan's dress, "That's hot" (although, unfortunately, the line reminded me of Paris Hilton).
And you can't forget Zach punching Hodgins in the nose. That was priceless.
Overall, it was more a character-furthering episode than a heavy science one, but I thought it was great.

I gotta disagree - this one really worked for me. If they'd gone the way this review suggests it would have been wall to wall cliches.
At last a show that managed to avoid rubbing a character's flaws in the audiences faces - I would have hated the show to have preached about gambling or to have seen Booth's loser buddy appear again. Turn up tap a friend for cash and disappear is kind of the point isn't it?
I like that this show doesn't follow the same formula every week - I like it when the characters interact in different ways and different combinations. I'm also REALLY thankful they didn't feel the need to mention CSI: Vegas - people who watch CSI will think of it automatically and the rest don't care!

I loved it! It was so a-la CSI/lv, but without Nick and the gang :). The beginning was totally awesome. What I don't like is that Bones doesn't fight and shoot in every episode, as she used to do in the beginning of season 1. Also, I enjoyed them deessing up and Angel fighting with Bones giving advice.

Well, I liked this episode. It was a bit akward to see Booth and Bones, playing an engaged couple, but it was cool.
But I laughed on this one, with Jack:
-Luca Brasi?
-....
-The Godfather?
-....
-Ok, somebody get a DVD, now!!!
XDDD

Actually, I had to watch it again for me to understand the story this time.. But I love the B&B moments and Booth's face upon seeing bren's "make over" & Cam's face upon hearing the zipping & the "that's hot" comment of booth were priceless!
