(S03E06) Dean O'Dell backing up Veronica -- who would've thought? Did I miss something or does Veronica still somehow have a job with a different school paper, one that's not the Free Press? Did she somehow get out of working in the library, or is there some other on-campus paper I'm forgetting? Not the Lampoon, is it?
I have to admit that after last week's episode, some commenters had a good theory that Wallace didn't cheat and had instead written something like "so-and-so is selling answers to this test." Alas, that doesn't seem to be the case. Though I was surprised to see some leniency coming his way with the cheating. Isn't that, like, expulsion material? Not to mention he stays on the basketball team?
Finally a mini-mystery worth solving! I can't remember a time when I wanted so desperately for Veronica to solve a "crime." The thing about this season is the mysteries haven't really been deep seated, hugely consequential problems that affect most everyone we know in some way. Not that rapes aren't a big problem, but they aren't affecting Veronica, Wallace, Keith, or Logan very much.
How long before Vinnie Van Lowe comes snooping around to find Keith with Harmony? I actually almost thought the mysterious "Rory" was going to wind up being Vinnie, staying at the Neptune Grand for a case ... checking on who Harmony was cheating with.
Random thought: What was with Logan shaking off a high-five with Parker for like five minutes?
It turns out I was partly right with Prof. Landry's T.A. being shady, but then we see he's actually quite involved with the rape mystery on campus. An interesting fact he brings up is how there were no semen traces at any of the crime scenes. To me this supports the theory that the Hearst rapist is a woman, and I'd guess it's either the (former) editor of the Free Press or one of the feminist students who's out to frame the fraternities.
Keith is certainly setting himself up for a big fall, even if he seems to have taken that accident as a sign that life is too short.
Another big moment in this episode was Logan coming to Veronica about Mercer, explaining that he can't tell Veronica why or where he was with Mercer. There are so many things that could be going on there that it's not even worth guessing. Though hopefully for you LoVe fans, the title of this episode doesn't span into V's world.
Quote of the episode:
Ratner: "You don't notice the little people because you're too busy lounging with Captain Moneybags here."
Logan: "That's Admiral Moneybags."

I got the impression that Ratner had stolen the stuff in his car and was blaming someone else to feign innocence.

Piz is becoming creepy. I predicted early on that he might develop a stalkery obsession for Veronica. No, I don't think he's the rapist. Instead, based on next week's episode, he probably will rescue Veronica from her roofiness. The TA, however, brought up the fact that there has been no DNA evidence gathered from the rapes... he even said the word "rapes" with implied quotes. Hmmm...!

How did the "horrible scary car crash out of nowhere" become the repeating scene of the year? They've used it on at least three other shows so far this season, not to mention those ridiculous Volkswagen commercials.

superbagman - I thought it was pretty obvious that Veronica set him up. Don't you remember the "D'oh!" moment she had right before they showed the trunk of his car? She realized she made a mistake in getting her revenge. For like the fifth time this season!
Veronica is really going way over the top this season with the jumping to conclusions, sloppy detective work and just generally irresponsible behavior. She's usually a lot smarter about these things, but this season she just seems to want to act out rashly on the first red herring she comes across instead of being her usual skeptical self. I hope there's either a good explanation (leftover stress from the end of last season combined with the terrible start she has had at college?) or that she just magically gets back to her old ways, because I'm really not liking this new, less impressive detective.

I may have missed something but didn't the TA set the whole paper thing in motion up to posting it on line? He wanted Veronica to track down Rory and see that Landry was a sleaze (his sleaze mind you but one he did not want to share).
I also kept expecting Vinnie to show up at the hotel and catch Keith with Harmony. If this were an F. Scott Fitzgerald book I would say she was named Harmony as that is exactly what she will not be bringing Keith.

I'm not sure how it works on other college campuses, but one of my professors at the University of Washington told us an interesting story once. Apparently at the UW, you basically get a free pass the first time you are caught cheating. There is a loophole in the appeals process whereby if you appeal the infraction completely through the process, the first instance is essentially ignored, and is sealed in your file. If you never cheat again, the file is expunged. However, if you are caught cheating again, the file is re-opened and as it makes a second infraction, you are expelled. Even if you don't appeal the first time, the most you can get for one instance is a zero on the assignment in question (which is the same fate that Wallace received).
While in some classes, weighting can determine if that ends up costing you a passing grade in the class, it's really up in the air about how much a zero can affect you. More than likely, you'll end up hurting your chances of working with good students on group assignments, which can be just as bad (if not worse) a punishment.

When Wallace, the prof, and the Dean met, the prof mentioned leniency due to Wallace confessing. So I believe he turned in a test that was blank other than a confession.
And for B), my guess is that Ratner *didn't* look the test up, he just saw this rich punk's girlfriend being all "who turned me in for cheating?" and figured he'd say he did it so he could take some cheap shots at her.

I have a bad feeling about one of the major characters in the series...like Keith said..."The thing about this season is the mysteries haven't really been deep seated, hugely consequential problems that affect most everyone we know in some way." This to me speaks as a sign that something very bad is going to happen to someone close to Veronica for one of the later mysteries in the season...

...assuming the show lasts for the rest of the season. Ratings have been down big time these last two weeks. As for next week's episode, I agree that someone will probably come along to save her, or it's some sort of a warning against her to stop investigating. I can't imagine the writers letting Veronica get raped again.

I'm sure most fans know this, but most of the college stuff is filmed on the SDSU campus in San Diego. Last week, they were filming at UCSD in front of the old gym (I'm a graduate student here). They put up Hearst banners and a Hearst billboard (laden with random fliers). The scene had Veronica sitting in front of the gym, and then popping up to see Piz coming out of the Gym with a bunch of other people and then walking and talking away. Unfortunately I couldn't hear any of the conversation, but it was very cool to see.

Great episode.
I didn't get the stuff in the trunk, but I do now. Hey, right or wrong the guy was a jerk.
Well, the evidence is all out there. Who dunnit?
Mercer - probably not - Logan has his back. Probably something to do with Dick.
Piz - could be a shocker, but a little too "Beaver"
Dick - too stupid to cover his tracks. Also wasn't at Hearst last year when the rapes began. Ditto Piz I guess.
The professor? Nah - he's too busy getting it on with the Dean's wife.
Professor's creepy TA? - not a bad canidate, but I just don't see it. He smells too much like a red herring. And he seems to disapprove of the professor' affairs. He strikes me as prudish? Maybe in love with the prof. himself?
The Dean - No evidence - but he does seem to engage in a lot of extracurricular activities.
Logan, Wallace, Weeval, Lamb, Keith Mars, etc. - yeah right.
I'm going for the paper editor and the creepy escort woman. The victims are either voluntary or involuntary. Think about it - the perfect cover. And the newspaper editor was at the frat party (remember Dicks rat trap hand?). She roofies them and creepy chick drives them home to shave their heads? No DNA evidence makes sense. And who would suspect women in a rape case? Especially woman working as a team? They may be doing it to cover up something else. Or to gain power - this may be why Veronica is targeted next - she got the newspaper woman fired by the dean.
Maybe Lamb's lack of enthusiasm for the case means something. Probably that he suspects a set-up.

Am I the only one that got a bit bugged when Piz woke up Wallace with the tennis racket and said:
- I could have just left you there and taken your ipod.
Since Wallace clearly don't have one...

They all got it from Pulse?

He was listening to something in the library scene.

The T.A. obviously has some "hair" issues. He certainly wears a wig, beard looks "painted" on. When Veronica notices his "map" of the rapes, he notes that there has never been any DNA found at the rapes and specifically mentions hair. I think that he probably has some sort of "hairless" condition that makes him feel unpopular with the ladies. He then rapes them and shaves their heads to make them bald like he is.
The goose chase he put Veronica on might have been a test to see how good she actually is and how worried he should be about her.

I concure that there are only two plausible leads to the rapist
- The TA
- The Newspaper Editor
Though, none of the evidence is from that matter to be sure...

If you're referring to the first scene, then when the Dean talks about Veronica's 'story', he means the report she made to him about Claire's faked rape. Veronica is still slaving away in the library, as far as can tell.
