Ray Richmond over at The Hollywood Reporter spoke to Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip creator and head writer Aaron Sorkin today and found out that not only have the ratings for the show the past few weeks made the execs at NBC happier than they were, but that a full season order for the show might be coming any hour or day now. Another source at the network said they would be very surprised if the show wasn't picked up this week. Here's a quote from Sorkin that is interesting, especially since it addresses something that is often talked about here in our comments section:
"Hopefully soon people will start paying attention to the show instead of who's making it," Sorkin told me today. "I really look at it as just the cost of doing business. I knew the reaction to the show was going to be a little bit noisier than I'd prefer. But hopefully, we're finally settling in and the audience is seeing the amazing cast and acknowledges the great, committed group of people who are behind this show."
Sorkin also makes a few comments about how TiVo and the web have not only changed how viewers see their favorite shows, but also how the networks look at the numbers and make their decisions on what to do.
This is good news for Studio 60 fans, and television fans in general. If there's one show on the air right now that deserves more time and more episodes, it's this one.

Sorkin's mention of TiVo recordings, to me, makes for a very inaccurate measurement. For example, just until two weeks ago, I had a season pass for Studio 60. I had a bunch of episodes recorded, but I just wound up deleting them.

F**k yeah! First "Always Sunny" and now, hopefully, this!
Though it does look like that ratings wise, Studio 60 has stabilized, and while it's lower than anyone was hoping for, they are still decent, especially when you factor in the high paying advertisment factor.
Personally, I disregard the TiVo factor, though the iTunes factor may still be worth considering. Hell, if it was enough to save The Office, then I'm not saying it's Studio 60's salvation, but it might be enough to get the show over the line.
Though I wonder how NBC.com is doing in terms of advertising and the like. They now seem to be offering a plethora of shows for download/streaming, and it would be interesting to see just what kind of an impact it is having on the numbers.

It's been reported that Nielsen measures playback within one week of original air date when rating tivo /
dvr usage.
So no worries about your TiNo's

Okay, but the thing is, other than product placement, what advantage does Tivo give to the networks? I mean, people are watching the shows, but not the ads, so it's basically a loss in their books. Other than the psychological advantage, is there any point, from the networks perspective, for the TiVo results to be counted?

This is extremely good news. This will relieve stress of fans who have been hearing this cancellation talk for what seems like eons. Mostly, I'll be happy that people will just shut up for awhile about it.

I hope that it's true. I love this show! Every week is getting better in my opinion. I was just saying to my wife how amazing that 7 years of Westwing and a gazillion years of Friends has just vanished, a true credit to great actors. The rest of the cast is good to, allthough I still tend to think Daily Show everytime I see Rob Cordry.

People, I for one, will stop paying attention to who is making this show when his politics and contempt for flyover country become less apparent.

Too right. There's a certain breed of 'progressive' who seem to think they are a modern variant of a Master Race, and are utterly repellant even to those of us who otherwise might have some sympathy for some 'progressive' issues.

I hope it gets picked up because I couldn't stand to see Matthew Perry get cancelled-he looks too vulnerable, and for some strange reason I do like him with Harriet.

Even Joey lasted more than a season. Doesn't mean I'm going to watch this show. It's too bad they keep crap like this on the air, and cancel Smith. I would have much prefered to watch that show instead.

Yes because canceling Studio 60 on NBC will really make CBS bring back Smith. Idiots.

Fail to see the logic why this is good news for television fans in general. If it's a bad show, that many people have already rejected, wouldn't it be good news for television fans in general if NBC replaced the show with something viewers actually want to watch?
I no longer watch S60, but am amused by the righteousness of its remaining viewers. They are loyal, but a little to high and mighty.

Studio 60 is a fast-paced, interesting, sometimes challenging show. There are very funny moments and ideas that appeal to me, and that keeps me watching. I happen to come from one of the "fly-over" states and am not at all offended by this show ably demonstrating the prejudice (real or perceived) that people on both coasts have against those of us in the Midwest. Why should this show ignore the "prejudice" if it exists? Recognize that it is a television show and either enjoy it as fiction, or turn it off.

I think this show is picking up. Sometimes you just have to let the show grow. NBC has a very very bad habit of cancelling good things... (Boomtown, Heist) and I am very happy to see another good show not get the ax.
