Tonight's Law and Order: ripped from the headlines (again)

Law and OrderRegis just asked Chevy Chase if tonight's Law and Order episode was based on the Mel Gibson case. First of all, dumb question. Second, Chase said it was kind of inspired by the case.

Right.

Law and Order has officially gone from simply boring to downright ridiculous. Have you seen the previews of tonight's episode? Chase plays a famous celeb who is pulled over by the cops and goes on an anti-semitic rant towards the police. Then he goes to the police station and tells them that he owns the town, and then calls a female police officer "sugar tits." Are they kidding with this? It's one thing to be "ripped from the headlines," which every single episode of the show has been since, what, 2002? But this is just lazy and embarrassing TV-making. And the phrase "ripped from the headlines," to me, just translates to "this is controversial so we're going to capitalize on it, plus we're too lazy to think of new plots." And the fact that there's a murder-twist to the story doesn't make it original.

I'm sure later eps this season will be about a pop star adopting a baby in Africa (only the pop star will be brunette instead of blonde!), or maybe an episode about the son of a famous Playboy playmate and reality show star that is found dead in a hospital room?
