(S03E15) Final Four! Not just final four, but Halloween final four. Fog machines, fake spiders, and bad acting from Samantha. I think you could make a case that maybe Willa Ford deserved to be in this group, but with or without her, it is a pretty impressive bunch of dancers. From a dancing perspective, as well as a ratings one, this has been a very successful season. And things only pick up from here. I couldn't do screencaps this week, and ABC didn't have any images up yet, so instead we have a picture of DWTS judge Carrie Ann Inaba as Fook Yu in Goldmember. She's on the left. And just for crazy TV trivia buffs, Fook Mi was played by Diane Mizota, who you may remember as the host of G4's Filter, or as Katy on Undressed. Anyway, two dances for everyone tonight, so on with the show.
Joey & Edyta (tango) - This was a crazy performance. The Addam's Family theme song? I didn't realize that they were going to take the Halloween theme that far. Mixed in with the goofiness of Joey doing the monster mash, there was actually some really good dancing. The judges loved it. Len called it fantastic and Bruno added a "fandango tango". The scores, 10 - 9 - 9. A good start to the night.
Mario & Karina (waltz) - Karina is always my favorite in the rehearsal videos. "Is there any reason your head looks like a pigeon?" They had another good performance. It was somewhat out of their comfort zone, but still performed very well. Much less flash, and much more feeling. The judges loved it, praising the emotional level of the performance. The scores, 9 - 9 - 10.
Monique & Louis (tango) - Something about this performance just didn't set right with me, but I can't really put my finger on it. There was certainly some impressive dancing, but it was missing that x-factor that draws you into the performance. The judges weren't that impressed. Carrie pointed out that there were mistakes, and Len thought it was beyond Monique's abilities. The scores 8 - 8 - 8.
Emmitt & Cheryl (foxtrot) - Emmitt is the man. Every week he just gets better and better. Their foxtrot was fun. Very classy, with the highlight being Emmitt's personality, and his footwork. The judges were split with Len and Bruno disagreeing on whether or not this was actually a foxtrot. Carrie didn't get into that but did tell Emmitt that he has a shot at winning the competition. I'm starting to agree with her. The scores, 8 - 8 - 9.
Joey & Edyta (pasa doble) - This was another really good performance. I liked the cape, and everything else, right up to the end. That last move with Edyta on the floor looked like it went all wrong. I think we can forgive that mistake though, as Edyta had the best outfit of the night. Wow. The judges are mostly happy with it. They all praised the chemistry between Joey and Edyta, but Carrie and Len had a few nitpicks on the details of the performance. The scores, 9 - 8 - 9. That Len is a stickler.
Mario & Karina (samba) - The samba is exactly the kind of dance that these two excel at, and they delivered it again. The thing that always stands out for me with these two, especially on the fast numbers, is how together they are when they are doing synchronized steps. It's very impressive. The only bad thing I could say about that performance is that Karina had the worst outfit of the night. The pink sack dress, the bad wig, and the inexplicable mask. It's the trifecta of ugh. Carrie loved it, but Len thought that they lacked spontaneity. The scores, 10 - 9 - 10.
Monique & Louis (cha cha cha) - This was better than their tango. It showcased just how much Monique has improved over the course of the season. That first dance hurt them, but they bounced back very well. The judges were much more impressed the second time around. Len called it fantastic. The scores - 9 - 10 - 10. Wow, that surprised me.
Emmitt & Cheryl (rumba) - This had a whole smooth 70's vibe. As a team performance, it was good. My complaint where this competition is concerned is that this was more a Cheryl number than anything else. Too much of the dance left Emmitt standing and being danced around by Cheryl. On the other hand, the judges love it. Not a bad word from any of them. The scores, 9 - 10 - 10.
Best of the night - For me, it had to be the Addam's Family tango from Joey & Edyta. It was just so bizarre, but still a great dance number.
Going home - I think Monique has struggled with the home vote all along, and getting the lowest scores from the judges may have sealed it up.

I really don't get how the judges scored Monique's second dance a 10. There were some footwork mistakes in their first dance, but their second dance had MULTIPLE obvious stumbles, including the one at the end. At most, that dance could have gotten a 9, but no way was that dance perfect.
It's become more and more painfully obvious that the judges are quite inconsistent in their scoring.

I think it's difficult for a female contestant to win this thing. For the most part, males frame their partners in ballroom and the females are the flash, the sparkle, whatever you want to call it. Well a male contestant gets a female professional who can sell a dance from years and years of experience. A female contestant gets a very strong male partner who definitely is an asset but that sparkle isn't always there.
I think Kelly Monaco wouldn't win now like she did first season. Even Stacy Kebler with all that dance background of hers couldn't win last season. Monique doesn't stand a chance against Edyta, Cheryl or Karina as far as selling a performance.
Karina can dance circles around Mario and as long as he's still moving his feet, no one notices. Joey can be stiff as a board but Edyta wears those very low and high cut outfits and gets tanner each weeks, no one comments on that. Cheryl can out charisma Emmitt on the dance floor any day.
I'm not saying those guys can't dance and they aren't doing well. All three are great dancers and performers. Louis is probably one of the better males teachers on this show considering the improvements made by both Lisa last season and Monique this season but he can't teach what you can only learn from years of experience. He also can't wear the outfits these women are wearing or be in the front, spinning, smiling, flirting like the other three professionals that are left.
This is just been a pet peeve of mine since last season.

Many say Mario Lopez is going to go all the way. It still remains to be seen. Is Dancing with the stars your favorite or is there another reality tv show that is?

Monique's tango was just bad and here's why: in Tango you're supposed to brush the knees together and she just danced with open legs all the time. I actually think it's Lo's fault because he's not paying attention to her style, he chose complicated routine and did not teach her the basic of tango: smooth walking, straight legs when you reach out and knees together!
I agree that the judges scoring is all over the place. But it's what make the show intersting. They show is that they weigh performance, technique, presentation, eterntainment and their own subjective take on it.
