In case you weren't buying the rumors that the character of Gregory House, M.D. was very much based on Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes, the deal was pretty much sealed when our beloved curmudgeon took a bullet to the gut care of Jack Moriarty at the close of season two. Moriarty is also the namesake of the nemesis that took Sherlock over the cliff with him in the short story The Final Problem. But with our House and Holmes, it's the inner demons that really torment.Here's a blow-by-blow on the House-Holmes connection:

Among the characteristics the two characters share are
* their ability to come to rapid conclusions after the briefest examination of a client/patient;
* On the pilot episode, the main patient is named Rebecca Adler, possibly after Irene Adler, a well known female character from the first published Sherlock Holmes short story "A Scandal in Bohemia";
* Another patient, whom House failed to diagnose twelve years ago, has the name Esther Doyle which evokes Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the author of the Sherlock Holmes stories;
* In the third season opener, the name of House's attacker is revealed to be Moriarty; Holmes' nemesis was Professor James Moriarty.

There's something else, something I'd call a coincidence except that there are no such things. It's a minor point, but one that stands out for me amidst this talk of House and Holmes: Morse has arrived on the scene. Yes, David Morse, the actor, but there's this other Morse, you see.
Just throwing that name in with all this talk of mysteries and detectives and the British and the things that send a chill down your spine . . . Inspector Morse, as played by the great John Thaw, whose grumpy, growly, curmudgeonly soul must hover somewhere in the vicinity of House.
