Interesting article about Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip over at FOX News by Roger Friedman. However, before I go any further, let me preface all this by saying that this is the first time I've ever read anything on FOX News and found myself nodding in agreement. It's an odd sensation.
Anywho, Friedman makes all the points we've already heard time and time again about Studio 60. The staple being "Who cares about rich people with drug habits making a TV show?" Not many apparently. Regardless two things stood out for me in this article. Friedman praises Matthew Perry in his role as Matt Albie, something I feel I haven't read enough of. Perry has officially grown out of the Chandler Bing shell and whatever Studio 60's future may be, Perry seems poised to have a career where he's known for more than just Friends. He's definitely the reason I'm still tolerating the show.
The second point Friedman made that struck me was that according to an insider (always reliable, those insiders), the Studio 60 cast has already been telling friends and family that the show is a lost cause. Hence Friedman's presumptive article title about cancellation being imminent. While it seems like the show is heading in that direction, more scripts were ordered. So who knows what could happen. There's no reason why Studio 60 can't bounce back. Although it might take some help. Time-slot change anyone? I still haven't given up on the show, but the feelings I had about it over the summer before it began and what I feel about it now... night and day.
[Thanks to Porchland, erroneous_nick, and Jeffsmith for pointing out Friedman's article to us.]

I agree with Fox News!!!
*Screams!*
Matt Perry is the only reason I want this show to live, he's amazing on it. But it's true no one cares about a drunk NBC president or a druggie movie maker. I hope that in a year or two Sorkin can make another behind the scenes show that will be watched and be good.

This show is truly terrible and it was only a matter of time before it was canceled. Good Riddance.

FOX News' entertainment news coverage has always been far more better and accurate than its political, domestic and international news.

I feel as if I could have written this very same post, Jonathan, except for the fact that your style is better.
My excitement for this show right through the pilot which I saw thanks to Netflix was so high, only to have it not only drop but be dashed with the second and third episodes.
And it is Matthew Perry's work that stands out for me no matter how bad the rest of the episode is, and with that his teamwork with Bradley Whitford. Going into this show I was afraid that another Sorkin/Whitford collaboration was too soon after 'The West Wing', but I had no problem separating Danny Tripp from Josh Lymon. And that's probably due more to Whitford's acting.
I always felt that of all the cast in 'Friends', Perry showed the most promise. But I was also afraid that he would be typecast as the goto guy for wisecracks. And his movies roles didn't do anything to change that perception. 'Studio 60' has been able to break the chains his 'Friends' history had on him for future roles.
If the show does fail, it's going to rest solely on Sorkin's shoulders, not the actors. (Well, most of them anyway...)

It's sad that the show had so much potential and is now deemed a lost cause by most. I would probably consider myself one of the many who has given up on Studio 60. As an avid Sports Night and West Wing fan I myself am shocked that I'm giving up on something Sorkin created. I'll stay with the show until official news comes but I won't be sad if it doesn't get a back nine order.

the problem with studio 60 is that sorkin treats it like the west wing. where the problems within the show are presented as some great problem. (the decline of the taste of this nation notwithstanding).
he is at his best (even during the west wing where he could soapbox all day and have it be great) when (as noted by several outlets, including TVS) he uses the setup as a backdrop to the personal relationships. if studio 60 show within a show as merely the setting for getting these people in the same space (a la sports night) i think it would fare far better.
though i tend to think that compelling drama is compelling drama. if someone has a drug problem, it can be something that everyone can relate to, even if it is a rich hollywood type. and i also think the lack of quality television on broadcast television should be something more people worry about (a kind of canary in the coalmine viewpoint on my part).

its sad that no one understands that the best shows insult its viewers. What's the opposite of pandering television? All you ppl say that you want television to be smart, politically charged, intelligent, stylish, non-lowest denomiator, non milquetoast, and non Dane Cook jokes but when Studio 60 comes along, you guffaw because it dares insult you.
Please.

I liked this show at the beginning, I really liked it. But this past week, it just lost me. For instance, making Columbus, OH the small town where nobody has heard of Abbot and Costello? That just didn't work for me. Seeing Eli Wallach was great, but that was it.
I want to see more of the behind the scenes of the show, and less of the Matt relationship. I just don't care about how he is doing. I want to see more of the writer's room.
It also doesn't help that the show within a show isn't funny. That is not to say Sorkin's writing isn't witty and good, but he just doesn't write sketch comedy well.

It's a shame that this talking is starting, although it's obviously not unexpected. Each week, I'm loving the writing and acting -- especially Matt and Brad. Never once do I think of either of them as Chandler or Josh, respectively. NBC doesn't have much else, don't cancel it -- move it to Wed 10p.

this show has to be tolerated now? i would think a show about the love and dedication it takes to put on a tv show would be better received by people who blog about tv.

Yes, David, a bad show IS a bad show (penatrating analysis, by the way). That's why things like Kidnapped, Vanished, Runaway, etc are getting shortend seasoned, or axed all together.
Studio 60 is a lot of things, but a bad show is NOT one of them. Uneven? Yes. Miscast? Probably. Self Important? Definately (Though, what's wrong with a TV show taking itself seriously? I disagree wholeheartedly with those that are commenting that the characters place too much value on what they do. I've worked in amusement parks my entire life, and the things that are important to our operation are things that others would laugh at. I'm sure its the same with anyone dedicated to their jobs). Takes too many swipes at Conservatives in Fly-Over states? Yes (But, as a conservative living in Kansas, it doesn't bother me, its just entertainment).
The show is brilliantly written. For the most part, very well acted (Peet is the only one who is out of place here, I think. I think though, she's a talented actress miscast. Whitford, Perry, Paulson (Yes, Paulson, dammit), Busfield, Corddry, and Hugley have all been oustanding.
Just because you don't like it doesn't make it bad. Go find an Arrested Development post to write about if it makes you feel better.

I'm wondering if I'm watching a different show because I've been loving Studio 60 so far.
Interestingly while the ratings are not terrific on a whole it is the highest rated show for families making over $75,000 a year (a key demographic). Which is kind of funny since they made they noted on the TV show that viewers in this demographic were worth 5 normal viewers.

Wow, when Fox News is being praised by those not aligned with George Bush or any one on one of those internets, you know it must be true.
The show is just bad, in my opinion, and the ratings prove most people think that.
Its too self-important, might work when you're writing about the president of the United States - but not the president of a TV network, nobody gives a fig. It isn't funny - sure, its a drama, its not supposed to be, but when its a drama about a comedy show, it would be nice to know that somebody can be funny.
I'm counting the days until this crap is gone, I'd like to see one article mention how good it is without reffering to the staff and how good it should be - but clearly isn't.

No it's just bad, and most of America seems to agree with me. My grandma just saw the last episode and when I said it was as good as dead her reply was "Well... it's bad, just bad. At least I have Boston Legal".
The only reason we still watch it is because Of Mathrew Perry, he's amazing. I hate the blonde and the acting is fine to great, but the writing isn't top Sorkin and comes off as lame. It doesn't help that the storylines are also lame. A drunk president of a network? Who cares! We have a drunk president "running" the country and people still didn't care.
The show deserves to die and Sorkin needs to try again in the near future.

I have never seen a bigger bunch of people that are so quick to nod yes. Let me ask this, what brilliant 60 minute shows are you watching on "cable" TV. It may not be the best show ever, but compared to the abundance of lack luster crap that is usually found littering our air waves, it leaves me actually ready to swear off "cable" TV if the show does get cancelled. I guess anything with an actual script is somehow too challenging for the "American Public" Well don't fear, W.W.E, Survivor, and CSI await you. To the very talented Aaron Sorkin and Thomas Schlamme HBO or Shotime await you.

I really enjoy the show, and don't understand why people keep feeling compelled to say things like "I can't wait until it's canceled." I agree with Wilhelm - this show had a great start, a bit of a stumble, but the last three episodes have been great.
Now, that's not to say there are things to fix. The network president's character gets far too much screen-time, and is distracting from the rest of the show.
If you don't like it, then don't watch it. But, to feel pleasure in its cancellation is incredibly bizarre and troublesome to the future of scripted media on network television.

There is a script to Studio 60? Oh you mean that terribly writen, boring, unfunny thing. Oh that script.
I wanted to like this show, I really did, but it has none of the qualities that made Sports Night or West Wing great. It's a true shame.
