I suppose it was inevitable. The most recent episode of South Park, "Hell on Earth 2006," featured a Halloween bash thrown by Satan. When Satan finds out one of the guest has come dressed as the late Steve Irwin, who was killed last month when a stingray stung him through the heart. Satan approached the guest to tell him his costume, complete with a stingray hanging from the chest, was inappropriate and it was "too soon," but it turns out the guest is actually the Crocodile Hunter himself. Satan then kicks him out for not having a costume.
Mediawatch, a UK TV watchdog, called it "grossly insensitive." Comedy Central defended the episode, saying that fans have come to expect such things from the series, and that this is neither the first nor the last time people will be offended by the show.

as soon as this ep started i wondered if they (trey and matt) would go there, and yup they did. Its not the first thing south park has done like this and it wont be the last. IMO this has been the best season of south park in a few years.

I really do think they try too hard to be edgy.
But South Park has always been this way. Their only consistent source for comedy is a nihilistic take on current events and the ethical standards of various groups of people. Once in a while it's funny, though.

South Park hasn't been funny in a while. Even though I like to think I am somewhat open minded to all comedy no matter how depraved it is I do have to admit this was bad judgement on their behalf. Sorry Matt and Trey but I'm going to have to say TO SOON!

It's just a tv show! Yes, it was a little soon for that, but it did no harm. Why don't you "watchdog" groups get a clue & do something that matters.Everybody sees something that they think is not right, very often. They don't start being stupid and bothering everyone else about it. If you don't like it, don't watch it! How about a group watches you? I know you aren't as "do goody" as you act.

Good episode. Unlike the Simpsons, which allowed itself to get stale and began taking influences from other shows rather than influencing them, South Park keeps going down its own road.
I disagree with people that call it too crude. It's crude, but it tries to have some form of wit to its crudeness, as opposed to the show following it tonight (Drawn Together) which is just lowest-common-denominator jokes, simply throwing dirtiness out there and hoping it's funny.
That sad, this joke was NOT too soon and NOT insensitive. Steve Irwin jokes (and Cory Lidle jokes) were funny the day-of.
Tragedy always is.

Hey, do people in Jersey see those advertisements on the side of this page with the obnoxious guy in a blue shirt, black pants, and glasses just standing there awkwardly?
I hate those goddamn things.

the 'JOKE' was in poor taste. they have to draw the line somewhere. depicting gandhi and steve and a few other noble ppl in HELL is destructive to the social psyche.
there are lots of impressionable teens watching this show, and the creaters have a RESPONSIBILITY as decent human beings to make sure that these rare, few ppl still be treated with respect and heralded as people we should ALL strive to become.
when we look back on this century 500 years from now, its ppl like Gandhi who will make us PROUD of our history, of our people, of what we are capable of. These heroes will inspire the great leaders of the future, who are right now in their teens, watching this show, and thinking its cool.
its not cool, its just sad. i am a big fan of south park, and have loved this show for years, but they have to draw the line somewhere.
MATT AND TREY; DONT PROSTITUTE YOUR SELF RESPECT FOR THE SAKE OF CONTROVERSY, RATINGS AND FAME.

OMG people. Get a grip, for pete's sake!! It is a cartoon. If you"re watching South Park you know what is. It is what it is. South Park is shocking, crude, and irrverent. It takes pride in knocking down our idols. Steve Irwin was a great guy, but he wasn't a god. And in 500 years, I doubt that anyone will remember South Park or that it ever poked fun at Ghandi. And Stgmata, if it bothers you that darn much; turn the channel. I love South Park just the way it is. No one has ever been forced to watch it. Cartman rules. posted by 60's Teen Queen

There's actually a well-established reason why Princess Di and Ghandhi, etc. are in Hell. Only Mormons get to go to heaven. In one of the funniest scenes South Park ever did, it turns out the 'correct religion' was... Mormons. Yep, sorry everyone. The answer was Mormons. But remembering that scene just highlights how lame most of the Hell on Earth 2006 episode was.
The Steve Irwin joke was actually fairly funny, because they addressed the whole offensive part of it, and they also showed Satan being petulant by having him kicked out not for it being offensive, but for him not having a costume.

Please. Getting offended by South Park is like getting wet while swimming; it's going to happen. It's what Trey and Matt aim for and it's why people watch the show - whose turn is it to be mercilessly and tastelessly mocked?
I love South Park and it offends me on a regular basis. And you know what I do when I see that the episode is not for me? I change the channel. And as for influencing the impressionable minds of small children? If your children are still that impressionable? Don't.Let.Them.Watch.It.

Stigmata, go read Dante's Inferno. Placing people who were considered good - if not even great - in Hell is nothing new. It's social commentary, plain and simple.
If the media portraying good people in Hell had the exact effect on people you claim it does/will, Inferno would have the world placing zero investment in the Pope or the church, many of which suffered in the various circles of Hell in his work.
Get over it. It's South Park - and unlike Dante's Inferno, not a single organism is going to remember it in 700 years.

Just to show you what a pathetic organisation Mediawatch is...
C4's screening of 'The Exorcist' has been condemned by TV watchdog mediawatch-uk. Director John Beyer said: "C4 ought to exercise social responsibility, accept this is a nasty film and reverse its decision. It's not just horror - it deals with the deeply spiritual matter of devil possession and that's disturbing." He called on official watchdog, the ITC, to watch it and advertisers to withdraw ads during its screening.
ITV in the UK showed a tribute to Steve Irwin a week after his death, and at the end of it - it had one of his friends telling a joke about suncream... Mediawatch didn't even kick up a stink (i don't think they understood it).
I don't think anyone in the UK cares what Mediawatch have to say - just a bunch of jumped up pricks!!!
Lets hope it appears on Paramount Comedy in the next few weeks...

Mediawatch is the organization that was created by Mary Whitehouse and previously known as the "National Viewers and Listeners Association. She was the woman who once attacked the original "Doctor Who" for being too violent, so you know where they're coming from. Think of it as the British equivalent of the PTC but with a lot fewer members and a lot less clout politically.

Insightful commentary, meagan. You have an unusually apt and observant style.
The only thing that would have made it perfect would have been the addition of a few more exclamation points, but I nitpick.
Why haven't the creators of this site asked you to join the team? They are really missing out on a powerhouse of style and wit.
TVSquad needs your histrionics, poor syntax, and of course the inevitable string of lol's, Omg's, and !!!!111!!1 your commentary would provide.
