(S03E04) Before I start, I have to say that something flaked out with my DVR tonight and I lost some stuff between when Logan's sitting on a surf board with his supposed half brother, and then I pick up when Veronica confronts the guy about being a reporter -- just enough to get the gist of what happened. But obviously I missed something probably pretty significant in there and hopefully you fine commenters can help fill in the blanks there.
It's about time Veronica has a moment to confront Parker about her own experience with rape. This seems to be the one thing that may have ignited a reason for Parker and Veronica to be friends and, ultimately, why Parker is in the title credits for the show.
Speaking of Parker, suddenly her hair looks a heck of a lot better, so oviously the show runners decided they found the right style for her that makes it believable enough that it's a wig. It doesn't really matter, but it did sort of jump out at me tonight. Y'know, not literally or anything like that.
Anyone else find Mac's absence from the show really strange? Heading home because a "great aunt" died? Come on now. Either something's seriously up there or we've got one lame excuse for her to take a short leave from the show. It'd actually be cool if this was part of the setup for the second or third mystery of the season.
How is it that Logan's blowing through money so quickly? The new car maybe? The hotel's room service? I guess college isn't all that cheap either, but then again why would the accountant have an issue with that?
Like Rich mentioned earlier today, this post wouldn't be complete without pointing out Laura San Giacomo's appearance. This is one storyline I'm sure had more to it, but I'm sure the DVR cut that part out as well. I was a fan of the earlier seasons of Just Shoot Me, so it was great seeing Enrico Colantoni and her on the same screen again. Imagine if David Spade made a cameo on the show? How the hell would that work?
Random musing: Sorry to be stuck on hair situation on the show, but how the hell does Veronica's hair style change from one scene to the next so quickly?
So, did Chip really tell Veronica that he was screwing Charlston's girlfriend, or is Veronica just guessing in this case? Or did I miss yet another storyline advance in that missing chunk of time? When Chip said it was someone who'd never admit to sleeping with him, I sure thought it'd wind up being that crazy anti-frat chic who drives drunk college kids home. Am I way off base here?
Randomg musing #2: Funny how Veronica uses a site called "Planet Zowie" but still says she "Googled" when she did a search. Really, if you're not using Google, do you say "Googled?"
So it looks like the teacher Veronica met up with was the real half brother to Logan. I wonder if that's meant to go anywhere at all or if it's really just going to end where we last saw Logan making another call to him. And oooooh, those sneaky promo folks at The CW for telling us Matt Czuchry was playing as Charlie Stone, when actually he was ... I don't really know. Anyone? Anyone?
Well, at least I've got a good quote of the episode for you:
Veronica: "Here's a fun thing to say to your beau: mind if I go put the screws to someone?"
Logan: "Go ahead. Screw your brains out."
(Thanks to the folks at Sling Media for letting me test out and review their Slingbox AV, which I used to make the screencap. Look for the review of the device hopefully next week!)

i gotta say, i loved dick coming to Veronica's Apt. It was so cute. It was my favorite part of this episode. I am also getting kinda annoyed of Parker. Give Veronica a break girl! I just feel like they could be better friends, but parker just isn't giving her a chance. I really miss Wallace. He's only had like two apperences this season! Where is are side-kick!! come on!

I'm so glad that VM is hooking on more viewers this year! I love how they deal with Matt Czuchry's character. I was soo worry that Matt Czuchry, who was suppose to be doing this episode as a stunt to lure the GG fans anyway, was going to suddenly pop up as Logan's half brother... but they did a genius job by making him a con! i thought there had to be something wrong when Matt Czuchry was cast as a "teacher" And it's perfect for him to be a reporter as well since we haven't get to see the whole tabloid frenzy with the Echolls family this season yet.
oh, to answer Mac's random disappearance: TV Guide had an interview with Tina Majorino on Tuesday. according to her, Mac is gonna be gone for the next few episode and come back just in time to help Veronica solve the rapist mystery. i guess Tina Majorino has to work on her commitment with Big Love?

What you missed out on the surfboard was Logan telling "Charlie" of a Christmas at the Echols house. Logan peeked at his gift that was apparently a fruit basket. Aaron saw this and got mad, making Logan eat all the pears in the basket before anyone else could open gifts. Logan was defiant, eating them slowly until Aaron got mad and started to "shove them down my throat." At this point, Mom got mad and put a butter knife to Aarons' throat to get him off Logan.
Logan said something about how it was nice to have somoene to share this stuff with now and then we saw them on the beach, walking up to Veronica.

should she have said "zowied" instead of "googled"? it sounds weird.

This was not my favorite ep. They skipped over an awful lot, like how Veronica figured out that Logan had a half brother. One minute she's Googling, and the next minute she's got Charlie's name in big letters on her white board. And they never explained how the magazine writer knew about Charlie, either -- he was just magically tapping Charlie's phone when Logan called.
As for Mac, I suspect there is a more mundane and real world reason she was gone last night. The show probably contracted with the regular but not major actors (e.g. Percy Dags, Fancis Capra, Tina Majorino) to be on less than the full season (or half season, in this case). That way they can pay them less money, and with the show in trouble, that might be some needed savings. Thus we see less of Wallace, Weevil & Mac. And we get lame reasons why.

YES, JeffL! That bothered me as well. Otherwise, I thought the episode worked fine.

I'm a VM newbie. I just started watching this season and I'm really liking it. Now I just gotta check out the first couple seasons.
But as an FYI, it is EXTREMELY easy to burn through money in college. I'm not sure how much money Logan has, but I had a good amount of savings while in school, and I ended up blowing most of it. And not just on luxuries. Parents (and loans) paid for the actual "schooling" part, but I picked up everything else. Cafeteria food sucks, books add up, computer broke, furnishings, etc. It's easy to blow it.

I think having Mac absent works out well because it sort of allows Parker and Veronica hash out their issues.
By the way, my guess as to who the mystery woman sleeping with the frat guy is the editor of the paper. Total random guess, but that's definitely someone who wouldn't admit to it.

I think there will be more to the half-brother story. We'll end up finding out there's a good reason why the reporter was already checking into him.
Hopefully it will all necessitate a visit from Alyson Hannigan as Logan's sister.
Also, is anyone else still expecting Logan's mom to show up one day? Still think the suicide was fake.

The suicide only remains real for as long as it takes Rob Thomas to think up a good plot for it, I think. (Assuming the show lasts that long.)
Man, Dick is EVERYWHERE this season. He shows up more often than Mac, Wallace, and Weevil, for godsake. What's with that? I can't help but think it's suspicious, thinking of how much Aaron got shown before he was outed as the murderer in S1.
The mystery woman sleeping with Chip the Frat Guy was the girl who was also sleeping with Charleston the Frat Guy. Hence why she wouldn't admit it publicly.

Here's a question for you.... how exactly does that ATM picture prove that noone from the frat was involved in the rape?
Is the assumption that the asian guy in the picture is the rapist? If so, are the cops going to nab him that night, ending the mystery?
How does anyone know that Dick (for instance) isn't standing just outside the camera's view?

The ATM picture proved that the rape victim was raped after she left the frat party (she still had her hair in the picture), although she was pretty obviously drugged by the time the picture was taken (the store clerk was saying how she could barely stand up). The guy who was with her (random asian dude) didn't have any money to make the purchase, so he went to the ATM (with random asian dude), got the money, and went back to pay.
The ATM picture caught only the two of them, and the clerk said there were only two people who came into the store. That leaves random asian guy as the last person (that we know of) with the rape victim before she was found the next morning.
That was how the frat was cleared.

The last two episodes were outstanding after a so-so beginning. Nice comeback after the jumbled up second season Thomas.

So I guess the question is... assuming the asian guy was the one buying the condoms (I was surprised they didn't take his picture back to the 7-11), why didn't there seem to be some urgency in tracking that guy down?

Parker: "Mac isn't here, she got the call and is shooting Big Love elsewhere."
Anyway. Good episode, a big improvement on last week's. Some deeper mysteries, and lots of overlapping ones. Plus Logan is at his best when he is being screwed over because of his family.
