Elisabeth Hasselbeck, co-host of The View, took up some air time yesterday to rant about the name of a character on last week's Law & Order SVU that had a similar name to hers. On SVU, an 'Elizabeth Hassenback' was raped and murdered. Hasselbeck said she didn't see the episode but a friend told her about the similarities with the names and she was disturbed. Hasselbeck called one of the producers for SVU and asked about the names, which the producer said was a coincidence. Hasselbeck also said the producer was defensive and rude with her and essentially hung up on her when she tried to tell him that she didn't appreciate the victim's name because it made her feel unsafe. I admit that I flipped the TiVo back to see the victim's name because I thought it was Elisabeth Hasselbeck. She argues that's it's socially irresponsible to basically portray her as being raped and murdered. She also said she didn't want any more SVU actors on The View, as if she has control over that and they actually had anything to do with it!So... is Elisabeth Hasselbeck overreacting? Or, is SVU really taking a nasty swipe at her?

Total and utter overreaction!! This could be a simple case of one of the writers seeing her on TV or her name in print and thinking it would be a good name for a character they were creating (changing the name slightly). You analyze anything long enough and you can pull out all sorts of alternative theories (SVU writers have it in for her/ hate her/ coincidence/ just a good, unique name for a character/ etc.)
Also, I don't feel she needs to air her grips on television just because a producer was "short" with her or didn't say what she wanted to hear. There are a lot of people out there that can rub you the wrong way in how they talk to you or act around you. As I've read in these comments, there are people who hate Elisabeth for what she believes, says or implies. They just don't have millions of views to grip to about it.
Get off your high horse Elisabeth. Just because a character in a FICTIONAL television show, who happened to have a name similar to yours was killed in this SHOW, does not mean people are going to attempt to do you harm. Just get over yourself!

Wow....I could understand if this person was really famous and her name was plastered all over the place, but it's not. I imagine there are quite a few people who have no idea who she is.
Either way, I think it's ridiculous how some of you have jumped to the conclusion that it was done on purpose and you have no evidence other than the names sound similar.
And what exactly is supposed to happen to her because of the character on the show? Oh yeah, she's in danger of being raped and murdered. She's a nutjob and I've never watched the View or even seen this woman before.

If a Barbara Walker or a Rosie O'Dougall get knocked off in the next few weeks on L & O then Elisabeth might have a point. She could have ignored it whether it was intentional or not and it be a non-issue. She just has to have the attention. Her rants hurt her more then they help.

I didn't see the SVU episode. Was the character a daytime talk-show personality? When Law & Order "takes stories for real life events" they do just that. Take a crime story and fictionalize it. They don't use real names. And they don't make up stories about real people. For instance, in the upcoming Mel Gibson story they probably won't be calling the character Gel Mibson, or something.
It seems incredible to me that many people aren't even open to the idea that this could be a coincidence. Princess E.H.'s narcissism explains why she thinks it's all about her, but what is behind her supporters paranoia?
But I understand why the right feels constantly persecuted and under siege. They only control the White House, both branches of Congress (until next month anyway), the Supreme Court, 90% of talk radio, and the only have one 24-hour news channel devoted its to propaganda. God, that's got to be tough.

The real idiocy here is Elizabeth's suggestion that the SVU episode will somehow inspire somebody to rape and murder her. Yes, people get ideas from TV all the time -- "I should get one of those striped shirts," or "I should get my hair done like that," or "I'd sure like one of those new (fill in the name of your favorite trendy automobile brand)" -- but who's going to watch an episode of a TV show and think "Hey, *I* should rape and murder someone whose name sounds a bit like tonight's victim"?
Perhaps Elizabeth has forgotten that there are plenty of people in this world who will rape and murder *any* woman who happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. And because she's reasonably attractive (people who don't like her politics may feel free to add "...with the TV's sound muted") and appears on national TV several times a week, there are probably a few less than stable individuals already nursing an unhealthy interest in her. "Billy", from comments #27 and 28, sounds a bit like one of them.

EH needs to get a reality check. Who cares if the names were similar? She stands a lot better chance of getting a stalker based on her appearance on "the View" and Survivior than with her name being similar to a character in TV drama. The character on TV did not look like her or in any other way depict her. "Fame" itself gets stalkers. If that is her concern she needs to quit her job at "the View", get out of the public spotlight, stay home and bake cookies.
As for the producer being rude to her, we only have her version of that and even if he was, big flippin deal! Someone rude in New York? A producer being rude? Wow, how unusual!!!! If her skin is that thin she needs to move and get another career! The poor guy was probably in shock wondering what the heck was with this lady calling and whining about this. If I were him I would have hung up on her.

i was so mad that i emailed elisabeth. to think they "attacked" her because of her political beliefs is self-centered and...um, stupid? yea, really stupid. they have a former Republican as a recurring guest on the show.
she's crazy. in ur blurb, tho, u should have mentioned that rosie o'donnel said the show was an hour of mysogyny. that's just disgusting. it's arguably the show on television that empowers women the most. at any rate, it doesn't hate them.
ugh.

Yawn! SVU has had many dozens of victims over the years with names similar to or the same as real live people. This is the first time I've heard of anyone having a major hissy-fit over it. Elisabeth Hasselbeck must be leading a pretty pathetic life at the moment if she feels such a need to stir up a firestorm over something as trivial as a fictional character's name.
Get a real life and get over it!!! SVU is a good show. The plots have a strong feeling of relevance. Something I can't say for Hasselbeck. I believe SVU has made many people more aware of the feelings of victims of crimes and their humanity. It takes the crimes from being statistics on the news and gives them a personal feel.
It's a shame the producers of The View don't seem to be able to imbue Hasselbeck with a more human and less cartoon-like persona.

The name is not the same people, and please remember that is where it ends. I mean there are no other similarities. The character in question was not an overpaid, undertalented talk show co-host, nor was she married. So what is the problem?
My question is what are the writers supposed to do? Should every fictional victim just be called Jane Doe?
If the name they used belonged to my wife, or my sister would the View be giving us air time to gripe? No, they would chalk us up as loons, pat us on our heads, and send us on our way. This is just just 'special' treatment for a 'famous' person who needs to feel self important. I hate to breat it to all of you who are coming out in support of this looniness but I didn't even know who this silly ditz was until I ran across the video on IFILM.

Jason, and Jane Doe, you have my sympathy. :-)
An empirical search turned up many Hasselbecks,
slightly fewer Hassenbecks, but no Hassenbacks,
at least in NY state. I've lost track of all the scurrilous "Dons" on Law and Order, although they
were mostly Italian-Americans.

I think Elizabeth is overreacting. How many other names have been used on the show that belong to other people? I don't hear anyone else complaining. Just forget about it and not make such a big deal over it. If she hadn't complained about it alot of people would have never noticed.
