Elisabeth Hasselbeck, co-host of The View, took up some air time yesterday to rant about the name of a character on last week's Law & Order SVU that had a similar name to hers. On SVU, an 'Elizabeth Hassenback' was raped and murdered. Hasselbeck said she didn't see the episode but a friend told her about the similarities with the names and she was disturbed. Hasselbeck called one of the producers for SVU and asked about the names, which the producer said was a coincidence. Hasselbeck also said the producer was defensive and rude with her and essentially hung up on her when she tried to tell him that she didn't appreciate the victim's name because it made her feel unsafe. I admit that I flipped the TiVo back to see the victim's name because I thought it was Elisabeth Hasselbeck. She argues that's it's socially irresponsible to basically portray her as being raped and murdered. She also said she didn't want any more SVU actors on The View, as if she has control over that and they actually had anything to do with it!So... is Elisabeth Hasselbeck overreacting? Or, is SVU really taking a nasty swipe at her?

I actually think Elisabeth has a point. Her name isn't that common and this was too close for comfort. She is sort of overacting too but she brought it up on the view because of how the producer dismissed her and hung up on her. That just made her madder and made her want to discuss it on The View.
But what in the world would L&O have against Elisabeth to use a knock off of her name? That's the part that doesn't make sense. I saw the episode and thought immediately of Elisabeth so they had to know it would cause a reaction.

I don't like Elizabeth Hasselbeck, but the SVU people should be ashamed of themselves. It's a blatant swipe at her. Making fun of someone on South Park is one thing, but having someone raped and murdered on a show is disgusting. And don't try to tell me it was a coincidence.

(c) All of the Above.
I thought it was a swipe at her as soon as I heard the name on the show. And, ultimately, so what. It wasn't her, in the sense that the character on TV wasn't model after her in any way, she just had a similar name. To get all p.o.'ed and refuse to have the actors on is way, way over the top.

i thought that the writers created the name of the charachters and not the producers. maybe i am wrong, i do not know much about the naming of characters for a t.v. show. as for news that elisabeth hasselbeck's name being close to the name of the character just made me say "who is elisabeth hasselbeck?????....oh the blonde one on barbara walters daytime show!"

I think it's a valid point. The similarity in names is rather uncanny, and it was probably dropped by some punk in the writer's room who thought it would be funny. It seems that Neal Baer (the EP in question) was a total dick about it, too, which doesn't paint a good picture of him. I think that if he had been more diplomatic about it, this wouldn't have been taken to The View; I mean he did bother to call HER back, apparently, so why be rude about it? I think Hasselbeck's complaint is legitimate as I would probably be a little creeped out if my name was used in such a horrible, albeit fictional, context. The banning of SVU stars is a bit extreme, but B. Walters seemed to have her back on this, so who knows? It'll probably blow over soon enough, but it is irresponsible for something like that to go down, especially in a "ripped from the headlines"-type show.

I thought of her also when I was watching the show and my gut impression was that SVU's writers were taking a dig at Elisabeth Hasselbeck. And I thought it was unnecessary and pretty shameful for an otherwise good show to do something like that.

In this day and age of copy cat crimes, Elizabeth is right to be concerned. Walking the street of NYC, is no joy, now she has to look over her shoulders.
Guess, the writer was a fan of hers, maybe even had a crush on her, but he went to far!

A coincidence certainly isn't outside the realm of possibility and for myself, I've never heard of Elisabeth Hasselbeck so I never made any kind of connection. I certainly think she's overreacting to the name issue.
As for the producer being rude, we only have her word on that. And since I wasn't privy to their conversation I have no idea how she might have sounded to the producer. She may have been the rude person on the phone, causing the producer to react in kind.
Overall, I think she's overreacting. I certainly don't believe that "now she has to look over her shoulders" as Jeff suggested. She's certainly no more or less likely to be raped now because a name similar to hers was used for a rape victim on a tv show. Hell, the "real" her is on tv everyday.

She's overreacting. She wants to ban all SVU actors from The View because of something that may be a coincidence? Was the character a talk show host or was it just a similar name?
And to the person who made the leap and claimed that SVU was making fun of her by having her raped and murdered on the show, that is a pretty serious accusation and one with very little evidence to back it up.

Could have been a case of writers trying to come up with names for characters, and maybe The View was on the TV in the room at the time...

This is so silly, whether you like her politics or not you have to admit it's so obviously a swipe at her. Probably a liberal writer who doesn’t like her on the show and thought it would be funny. It's not funny, it's impossible to be a co-incidence, you may not like her but she at least deserves not to be named after a character that gets raped and beaten up.

Unless the FCC requires TV writers to give their characters names like Sjblqnx Nrcmndrfyogn, this is always going to happen. If there's a TV character with your name, the best you can hope is that he/she isn't an idiot. Elizabeth needs to get over herself. Would she have complained if the character in question, rather than being raped and murdered, had led a successful campaign to outlaw abortion? Even if the SVU character was a conservative morning talk-show co-host, she'd have no grounds for complaint -- the price you pay for being a public figure is that a certain portion of your existence is public domain.
Besides, it's not as if SVU is suggesting that rape and murder is awesome.

Picking a name like "Elizabeth Hasselbeck" is NOT random. I mean really, how many Hasselbecks have you ever heard of? That's just a ridiculous argument.
If someone had used another well-known TV personality's name, they would be just as outraged, and rightfully so.
They did this on purpose, for the very reason that other posters are already pointing out in their comments like "she's insufferable". The writers didn't like her, so they decided the best way to do that is to take a swipe at her. You can bet that they would have never done this to someone they admired.
Shows what real class act these people are. It's kinda pathetic.
