Although I thought last night's Studio 60 was the best episode since the pilot -- aside from the unnecessary smacks at Columbus Sorkin made -- it was sorely missing an element that I think could have sent the episode into the stratosphere: More Lauren Graham. She was severely underused in the two episodes that she was in, appearing only in sketches in last week's episode and one scene at the beginning of this week's. What a waste. I mean, come on! Who's more capable of rattling off Sorkinesque dialogue than Graham? She's had to do similar verbal gymnastics on Gilmore Girls for seven years; Sorkin dialogue would be nothing for her. Maybe they should invite her back later this season for a more involved storyline.
It's kind of too bad she was committed to doing GG this year; she would have made a much more believable Harriet than Sarah Paulson. And, given her friendship with Matthew Perry, the on-screen chemistry between the two of them would have been palpable. Oh, well. Timing's a bitch, isn't it?

She should have left the shit that Gilmore Girls has become. But I agree, I said it in the other review that she was useless in the episode. Maybe if there is a season 2 (waits for laughs) then they can get rid of the blonde bitch and have Luara Graham take her place.

I would have loved more Lauren Graham! Unfortunately, her shooting schedule for Gilmore Girls is a grueling one, and I imagine she only had a limited amount of time for another show. I would love to see her come back, either as herself or as a character on the show.
I'm still not sure why everyone thinks Sorkin slammed Columbus though. He painted it as a middle American city with hard-working people who have trouble equating someone telling jokes with someone rolling up their sleeves for a hard day's work or dodging fire on the battlefields of Afghanistan. I don't really see that as a slam.

I don't care for Sarah Paulson either. I was thinking that I found her character to be slightly annoying and I wish they would get rid of her.

I think that's exactly why she wasn't given much face time on the show thus far. I wouldn't be surprised if she ended up coming back (not permanently, but for a few shows) and being Matthew Perry's Anti-Harriet.

Is the conventional wisdom that the show is NOT going to get cancelled?
Consider: (1) ratings were down another two-tenths of a rating this week, (2) ratings have gone down every week since the pilot, (3) NBC is preempting a rerun next week with a new episode of "Friday Night Lights," (4) NBC has picked up "Heroes" for a full season but hasn't announced a pickup for "Studio 60," and (5) EP/director/"Cal" Timothy Busfield has already signed on to direct a pilot for Fox.
Does this sound like a show that needs to be looking for a place for Lauren Graham?

Oh THAT Columbus -- the city! I was thinking (hoping) he slammed Christopher Columbus and I missed it.

I definitely agree, I wish LG were playing Harriet. And I also agree that she was underused in the last too weeks. I think it was more of a cameo than guest starring.
BTW, while I was watching this weeks episode it popped into my head (Lucy Davis -Dawn- being on the show is just a coincidence, i swear :) that Nathan Corddry would have made a much much better Jim (The Office) than John Krasinski. I mean I like Krasinski but I think his pretty boy looks isn't very suitable for that role. Imagine Nate as Jim for a while in your head, it makes sense doesn't it?

WTF? Someone wrote that John Krasinski on the office is a pretty boy? Are you smoking something? That guy is borderline average to ugly in the real world. I dunno where you live but in most places, a guy like that would go unnoticed if not for the the amazing personality he conveys in his character of Jim. I'm a fan of The Office and that actor but pretty boy? a pretty boy is orlando bloom or johnny depp, not a guy who could be Ben Rothlesberger's brother.

i thought this was the WORST episode since the pilot. they get so sanctimonious about old-time television crap - who cares? i love your show of shows as much as anyone, but they didn't cure cancer, for cryin' out loud. i can think of very few things more annoying than listening to some old guy prattle on about his glory days. yawn-o-rama. the only storylines that didn't suck were the perry/hughley "is my material not racist enough for you" (and that scene at the improv was totally predictable), and jordan deere shamelessly pandering for friends. that was cute. but all the proselytizing about how deep and important tv can be was very annoying. get over yourself already.

You could put on Lauren Graham, Lauren Hill, Lauren Bachall it wouldn't matter this show is done. Friday Night Lights testing its spot means a Saturday night move next to Kidnapped is soon to come. It is much deserved for such an elitest show that does nothing but rip on middle America that is the backbone of this country. Good riddance to Sorkin.

I was expecting a much larger plotline between her and Matt considering the previews. It could have reallly highlighted her talents, but she was gone after a minute of airtime.

You dont think a story about a writer getting blacklisted during the McCarthy Era is important?
You dont think that this couldnt happen again? Before it was communism. Now it's Islam. A few more Muslim terrorist attacks and let's see how the country responds. The TV show Studio60 isnt important. It's entertainment. But just cuz it's entertainment doesnt mean its not a vehicle for ideas.
Law, government, wars all come from the ideological diffusion. One sketch launching domino. Look at Colbert and TDS.
Bah. go watch normal stuff. Go keep the status quo. You Ostriches.

That final scene with the old man really irritated me for one major reason. The old man mentioned that one of the guys he worked with was big into political humor, which he says the networks weren't big on in those days. Then that other guy says, "In those days" in a sarcastic manner, indicating he thinks that they have the same problems today. Okay, do the people making this show know NOTHING about late night comedy? Watch Saturday Night Live, a Leno/Letterman/Conan monologue, or the Daily Show/Colbert Report two-pack: in any given episode at least a quarter of the stuff is about politics or politicians, and it's often more like half. The idea that Studio 60 gets grief from the network about doing political humor . . . I gotta wonder what sort of lame ass sketch shows Sorkin watches.

Stop bitching about Sarah Paulson, she's the best thing on that show! Her and Amanda Peet were hilarious in the latest episode and Sarah Paulson and Matthew Perry have a great chemistry.
Having that little moment with Matthew Perry and Lauren Graham was SO transparent. Like, hehe, we know each other in real life and kinda date so it's all like, really clever that we flirt on this show. Stupid. Moving on, people. Lauren Graham's brief cameo/guest starring spot was great, but not that great. She should stick to Gilmore Girls. Now Christine Lahti, SHE was great. Bring her back, please.

So, Tammy, the first commentor on this post, doesn't see how Sorkin insulted Columbus? As a resident of Columbus for the past fifteen years, I see it very clearly. Obviously, Aaron Sorkin has never been to Columbus or even met or spoken to anyone who has.
The couple supposedly from Columbus were not portrayed as hard working, God fearing Mid-westerners as Tammy suggests, but rather as stupid, ignorant, humorless, racist, homophobic hicks. When Tom's mother meets Simon, she acts as if she's never even seen an African American before.
Columbus is not some out of the way small town where time stopped sometime prior to November 1963; it is, rather, the fifteenth largest city in the United States and the capital of Ohio. We do have black people here, and Hispanics and gays and art and culture and professional sports teams and even indoor plumbing.

Ray, if that's how you feel I certainly won't argue with you. You're the one who lives there. Maybe I took everything the wrong way, but I did see it differently.
I have lived in cities about the size of Columbus, and although most people know Africian-Americans sometimes they overcompensate because they are not racists but fear they will be perceived as such when they are in a place like LA or NYC. Personally I don't know too many racists with a thing for Halle Berry, so I didn't see them as being portrayed as racists but rather as trying too hard to show they are not. Actually, that's something my parents would do and they are neither hicks nor unfamiliar with African-Americans.
But if people in Columbus were offended, then obviously Sorkin had plenty of room for improving the portrayal.
