(S01E05) For weeks it seems the voice-over that accompanies the previews for upcoming episodes of Heroes has promised "the heroes will have to work together" or something similar. This week Peter actually does get the call to "save the cheerleader, save the world." And, even if the heroes don't make a whole lot of progress in that direction, they are starting crossing paths more. When it doesn't take itself too seriously -- which, most of the time, it doesn't -- then Heroes is a lot of fun.
Most of the fun, this week is had in Vegas. We get plenty of confirmation about what kind of congressman Nathan Petrelli would be, starting when he tells Horn-Rim Glasses Guy (who either teleports, or is racking up some major frequent flier miles) that "when I find you I will kill you." No. Nathan's not exactly a work-within-the-system guy.
Not only can Nathan fly -- he can fly fast. I wonder if he's been practicing on the sly -- he seems to understand his power better than any of the others except Invulnerable Cheerleader. His barefoot landing may need a little more work, but you gotta admire his political skills: it's not every pol who can somehow come out a situation where's he's been video-recorded fornicating, and end up with an extra four million in his slush fund. He's cool in a crisis. I like him more now that's he's shown to be deeply Machiavellian, rather than just a weasel.
In fact, I'm starting to think Nathan might be the nuttiest hero of them all. What kind of candidate, so willing the sacrifice his brother to the press last week for the sake of his image, now strolls into a Nevada diner in pajama bottoms? Couldn't he just fly back to the hotel, and land on the roof? But it's worth it, to see Hiro and Nathan meet -- they're a much livelier duo than somber Peter and Mohinder -- or Peter and Junkie Painter for that matter. It's a little frustrating having to wait for Peter to discover things we already know -- who the cheerleader is, for instance. Besides, I'm getting a little tired of those midnight-blue drenched New York scenes.
Mohinder's sea-change from "the scientist seeking answers" to "the scientist who thinks this all bullshit" somewhere between episodes three and four is bugging me, and I was happy to see him disappear early tonight. I wish he would go home, like Peter suggests. Maybe he did actually, as I'm not sure what happened to him between the subway ride and Peter's doubling-back to the artist's loft after Hiro's space/time warp intervention.
NIki's still the most frustrating character for me: she should have caught on to her mirror-twin by now, yet somehow, according to what she tells police, anyway, she thinks her husband DL has been following her around, causing all her trouble. Huh? A confrontation with her other self seems to be promised for next week, but as is said over next week's previews, "each answer just brings more questions." At least the Heroes producers are willing to admit that!
I don't know how poor Parkman, the psychic-cop, fits in. Other than being the first series regular to get caught and wiped by Horn-Rims, he seems destined to flounder around trying to do good, and getting headaches. He was pivotal when he first appeared and became (only temporarily, I guess) involved by the FBI in the Sylar investigation. Now he is the only character who seems to be actively moving away from the center of the story. Unless his wife wishes for a trip to Las Vegas next, I wonder what will become of him.
Not quite the mind-blowing climax of last week's episode, but I loved that Peter was there to relay future-Hiro's message when present-Hiro and Ando try the artist's number again. That must have blown Hiro's mind anyway ...

Was it just me or did that diner look an awful lot like the diner from Superman 2?
I may be being daft & it may be just that all diners in Nevada look the same, but I have the "I'm British" excuse for that, if so ;)

I'll eat my hat, as when I saw the pilot, I proclaimed it as being dull and overrated, and that I did not care for the series. How happy I am that I decided to stick with the show, as besides Dexter and Studio 60, this is my favorite new show of the fall.
I never really cared for Nathan in previous weeks, but he is really warming to me, and this series should do wonders for his career.
Personally, I chalk the dramatic transformation of Mohinder to him coming to New York, and thinking that his father's work would have all the answers to the questions that that he had regarding the 'heroes'. When he discovered that his father did not really have the answers, that the other guy who's place he broke into had more, and that the code his father had written was incomplete, then the stuff he thought would provide answers didn't pan out. It was then he realizes that his coming to New York was a waste, and when Peter comes to him, it seems like Peter is delusional, and that he has no such power that he speaks of. This causes him to get even more pissed off with it all, and when Peter takes him to the artist's place, them not being able to even get in just goes to exacerbate the situation.
With Lost dying a less than graceful death, it's good to have another show, albeit on another day and time, step up to provide some good sci-fi sustenance, but without getting too geeky at the same time. It's good it's doing well in the ratings, and especially for NBC, as they really needed a hit (that and something of substance, as while Deal or No Deal is a hit, it's the television equivalent of cheap crack. Gets the job done, but you feel like a whore after.).

I'm also starting to like Senator McBrother a bit more. He's starting to show some humanity and guile. One-upping Linderman's ploy was a brilliant move. He was much nicer to Hiro than I would have expected.
I also loved the scene where Hiro's friend goes to see Nikki. I knew that's where he was headed too; "Who-Is database", I feel like a nerd for calling that one.
Peter and Isaac are kind of getting on my nerves, what with all the brooding, but hopefully Peter will get that scar and grow a pair.
WHOA IDEA!!! What if the scar is from Sylar trying to remove his brain, but he borrows the cheerleader's healing power to survive? Although the cheerleader doesn't get scars, that would be pretty cool. Or maybe he'll hit his head on the medicine cabinet while crying over the sink; what a puss.
Greg Grunberg worries me. His power is cool and I dig his character, but where are they going with him? His encounter with horn-rimmed glasses guy and Dhalsim (from street fighter... get it?) and seeing Sylar are really his only connections to the Heroes, whereas wheels are already in motion for everyone else to meet soon (well maybe not Claire, but she's the object of the mission).
Also, anyone else thinking that Horn-Rimmed-Glasses (HRG) is not the villain? He clearly doesn't have a vendetta against the Heroes since he hangs out with one, and while I thought he would take away Officer Grunberg's powers, he only erased his memory of being abducted.
And the previews??? How awesome was seeing Nikki's ex/Micah's dad DL (I assume) come out of the freaking WALL?
I'm seriously loving this show.

Wasn't the way he was treated when he tried to talk to Nathan part of Mohinder's issue? He went back to the apartment and was pissed about how he was treated like a nut - only to have Peter who really seems nutty show up and take him on what to him is a wild goose chase.
This show is turning into one of those shows that I don't love but find myself watching every week.

I enjoyed this episode overall. I am still a bit irritated at the whole way they are depicting the Montecito from Las Vegas. I guess I just need to understand it is just a money-saving issue (NBC using an already established set) and that is not truly the Montecito of Las Vegas fame. Ed Deline would not allow the goings on in Heroes in his hotel!!
I am begining to wonder if the "Mind Wipe" guy is actually a person or if "it" is more of a manifestation of Claire's Dads' power. Probably not but it just seemed like the guy popped out of thin air in that hospital scene.

LOVE this show...
I wonder what effect changed in the future when Hiro from the future came to Peter and gave him instructions on getting his game on. It had to change something right?
NBC definitely has the cheerleader viewership numbers...way to go NBC for nailing down that market segment.

Maybe Sylar is the name of the organization that has no initials.

Todd: There's lots of creative ways that it could happen and work with the Las Vegas universe. It could happen while Ed and Danny are away from the casino. They can't be there 24/7.
Heck, Ed is supposedly shot by someone at the Montecito in the season finale from last year.
Anyways, it wouldn't be so bad if somehow they have a cross over between Las Vegas and Heroes.
Tim Kring created Crossing Jordan (and Heroes) and they have done a few crossovers with Las Vegas.
So we shouldn't rule it out :)

I love the show, but I'm a little disappointed with how they treated Hiro in the diner. Here's a guy who supposedly knows no English, but is suddenly able to speak with the flying candidate? If he could speak that much English, why didn't he say something in English to the painter's answering machine in the first place? It would have been better to have his buddy stick around the diner to translate, but not have seen the flying.

Why are these 2 adults, Hiro and his buddy, portrayed as naïve, puerile and silly? Not only does it seem out of place for the show but I can’t imagine the Japanese community is feeling warm and fuzzy. It’s like watching anime sometimes. TV needs some help- either the Japanese males are like the gruff and mean parents on Lost or goofballs like Hiro. I’m not Japanese but this is too obvious and formulaic if not insulting.
Bring back Sulu or something.

Um... there are no Japanese people on Lost. They're Korean. Pretty big difference. I know some Koreans and Japanese would be insulted by your statement in confusing the two.
Also, the korean people on Lost (ie. the rich/ruthless father) and the (over-protective husband) because of their violent backgrounds. That's only two people.
Maybe if you watched the show, you'd know this instead of claiming that "TV" is being racist.

I think what you're alluding to Gladiator is more a stylistic choice. Every single character is caricature of what they represent, and in the comic-book genre it's often desirable to give the characters (who are seemingly ordinary Joes/Jills) outlandish attitudes/personas. I mean look at like this:
-The cheerleader who wears her uniform ALL the time
-The torture/brroding artist who shoots up to paint his pain
-The wily politician who knows just what to spin to gain ratings
-The under-achieving brother who broods silently in his brother's shadow
-The skeptic doctor, torn between a traditional religious upbringing and a rogue father with fantastical theories
-The single mom who strips to support herself, but also owes money to the mob and has a questionable character as an ex-husband who also happens to be black
-The cop who struggles to do good all around, but can't keep his life in order
I'm sure I'm missing examples, but given all these elements, a bunch of Japanese sci-fi geeks going on an adventure doesn't seem all that inconsistant. Hiro is a happy-go-lucky guy; and it's obvious that he's not representing the entire Japanese community.
BTW, anyone else get a kick out of, "these instructions are all in English!" when he was trying to figure out how to operate the car?

I have a theory..
Peter can take on everyone's powers when he is around them. Credit me in the future if this is true.

I shouldn't have deleted these episodes because I could've sworn that when future Hiro stops time and contacts Peter on the subway, Peter was actually talking to Mohinder. But then when time starts back up, he's on the other side of the car. If so wouldn't it appear to Mohinder as if Peter disappeared right in front of him? Can anyone tell me if this is true, or has my memory been erased as well? :-)

First I would like to thank two posters here, ooda for the "cheap crack" tv comment and Chris W for the McBrother title - you two made me laugh!!!!!! Chris W. are you a Grey's Anatomy fan? (Just 'cause you hear the "Mc" attached to all men's names on that show).
Anyway, I liked Peter just a littttttle bit better this episode, but his hair drives me nuts. What's with the big flop over one whole side of his head - his character has been so wussy before this that I was actually waiting for him to pull out a scuncie or a fancy barette to pull his hair back! Get a haircut! At least we now know that Peter can act like a "power chameleon" and borrow the hero powers of those around him. Thank goodness 'cause that boy needs some extraordinary help.
Mohinder.....all I have to say is that they should either turn his character's attitude around or send him home, he couldn't be more annoying. Analyze him all you want, I still think he stinks. I don't mind the narrative he offers but his part should match the so-called wisdom he offers in his voice-over at the start of each show.
Nikki is still obnoxious...I thought something better would have happened with her in this episode but next week's previews make you think she is going to kick the bucket. However, previews always show you things in a twisted way so with our luck, she'll just get more powerful or something. Her powers seem more along the line of multiple personality disorder...don't they have meds for that?
I think Parkman the cop will have a much bigger part to play in this show than they are letting on now. Right now you see him as kind of blundering around (although his wife seems pretty darned happy - wouldn't that be nice????) but I think he is going to do something really important.
And what's the deal with horned-rimmed glasses guy? Could it be that he isn't such a wacko crazy evil guy? I thought for sure that he would have killed the indestructible cheerleader's rape-driven boy-buddy, but he let him off.
I am really starting to like Nick the political _ _ _ _, uuhhmmm, person, I loved how he turned the tables and walked away with a cool 4 mil. But the jetting up into the air thing?? How the hell could he have done that without any practicing?
Hiro - still my fav!!!! He is by far the best character and totally rocks the show!! NBC has got me reeled in for another week! Love my tv crack!
