Bloomberg News (via the Chicago Tribune) has a story that, according to a media analyst, ABC is poised to go after Jay Leno and sign him to a contract after his NBC contract expires in 2009.The analyst, David Miller from the Sanders Morris Harris Group, writes in a report that ABC would put Leno at 11:30, cancelling Nightline in the process. They will then push Jimmy Kimmel Live to 12:30. Both ABC and NBC spokespeople denied that there is any merit to this report, but you never know what's going on in the background.
If I'm Jimmy Kimmel, I'd be pretty pissed about being pushed to 12:30 after what would be six years of dutiful service at midnight, especially for the comedy black hole that Leno has become. But Leno gets the ratings, doesn't he? For ABC, it might be worth pissing people off.

I have a better idea...don't resign Leno...and hire KIMMEL...i prefer KIMMEL to everyone (although of course the current king Dave Letterman). KIMMEL is just so good at focussing on the absurdities of everyday life, especially in his monologues (which I think are the best during late night. ALSO the guy has a keen sense of listening. He doesn't seem to use notes and has actual conversations with guests. LENO is so focussed on the next question that it seems fake.
And Friday's UNNECESSARY CENSORSHIP is CLASSIC stuff!!!
oh yeah guests appear to be having have FUN on Kimmel!!!

If Kimmel got 4 ratings like Leno, he would have every right to complain about being pushed to 12:30. But since he only has about a third of Leno's audience, he'll just have to grin and bear it.
If Kimmel was a better property, ABC wouldn't be interested in Leno.

First, I've always liked Jimmy Kimmel, but the Atlanta ABC affiliate (WSB) doesn't carry his show and never has.
And really, I don't know that people would tune into Jay Leno on another show in the same way. Even my father, who was always a diehard Jay Leno fan, has recently switched to watching both Leno and Letterman. Jay would be wise to quit while he's way ahead and do some other things.
People like Letterman or Conan have built their careers almost entirely on a talk show, but Jay is a standup comic first and foremost, and there have to be plenty of other arenas he could go into.

Leno is still riding "The Tonight Show" brand that Johnny Carson built. Move Leno anywhere else and he'll fade in popularity. Carson built a late night tradition that only Letterman has been able to dent in ratings.
You could put almost any decent comic on "The Tonight Show" and generate good ratings. Letterman is the best, but Conan and Kimmel are very strong.
Doubt me if you want, but listen to me now and believe me in 2009.

It would be hard not to consider Jay Leno. Jimmy Kimmel is great at what he does but you have to consider the ratings that Jay's going to bring in. In the TV World, its all about who's going to get you the most ratings.

I can't stand Leno's opening monologue... I usually switch to Leno after Letterman gets done with his opening and opening bit. Jay's monologue is so freaking long that he is just gettting to the opening bit at that point.

Leno has better ratings and that means everything.
Its not because of anything related to The Tonight Show, the ratings are for Leno. Until 95, Letterman got better ratings, people don't watch The Tonight Show because of memories of the past or they feel they need to - they didn't 93-95, they do it because they like Leno.
Wether you are in the smaller demographic of people like Kimmel and Conan, good for you - you'll get some arguably funnier shows over there, but for most people Leno is some comforting simple fun in a time of turbulance - people like Leno and he deserves to be on TV until they don't, I hope somebody gives him another late night job - my days won't be the same without it.

Bagh, Internet Rumors. Why do they ignore the renaissance in Nightline's numvers. Why would ABC spend the boatload of money to woo Leno when Nightline is doing well?

Originally, Jerry Seinfeld was slated to replace Carson. Perhaps, now that Jerry is out of a job, he can finally take that post?
