If the comments section here is any indication, even though Smith was canceled rather quickly by CBS, it actually had a lot of fans. Of course, we didn't get 10 million comments, so "a lot" wasn't really enough.
TV Guide has a breakdown on why the show was canceled. It seemed like it could be a hit: West Wing/ER producer John Wells, big stars like Ray Liotta and Virginia Madsen, and lots of hype by CBS, but what happened? People have speculated that it was because the gang of crooks on the show weren't likable, but the magazine says that it was more the price of the show. Each episode cost about $3 million dollars!
I wonder how much that awful motorcycle chase with Simon Baker cost to film?

Well, that IS expensive. But I'm still sad. I really liked the show.
Did they not know it was going to cost that much, though? Why did they greenlight it in the first place?

I don't understand why some networks don't just try and cut back production costs instead of banking on getting huge ratings. This is the same reason we were given that HBO cancelled Carnivale and Showtime cancelled Huff. I'm sure the economics for a cable premium channel differ from those of a major network, but I can't believe a show like Smith couldn't be made for less, without a noticeable drop in quality.

I just couldn't stomach the closeups of Liotta. What's happened to him?! He's like totally butchered himself with plastic surgery or something, he looked horrible. Plus, SNORING. I mean, with a cast like that you'd think the show would be great, but aside from the pilot, it just flatted out and I lost interest after two episodes. Good riddance.

The Network could've asked the Producers to cut back on costs. The show didn't even get a chance to show where it was heading, and to fully develop the characters.

Liotta only signed a one year contract and said in FHM last month that if he'd known it was this hard and time consuming to do a tv show he wouldn't have signed on in the first place. This gives me the impression he wouldn't have been back next year regardless of the ratings.
CBS might not have wanted to spend the money to make this show a hit given the feelings of its only big name star.

3 million is expensive but it isn't obscene. Most shows cost about 2.5 per episode.

Yeah, the awesome HBO show Deadwood bought it for "economics." I think perhaps that is a cop-out. If you build it AND they come... what more could you want?

I think economics is a poor cop-out. They had to have known how expensive it would be to make the show and you can never rely on a show being successful by simply putting together some movie actors. It doesn't work that way. If the writing and delivery is shitty, it doesn't matter who's acting in it and how much money is put into it.

I thought this show had great potential - so much more than "studio 60" which everyone is raving about (gosh is that show boring)... I was hoping for an Amy Smart takeover of the whole gang... TV execs make another awful decision - I guess we can look forward to another "CSI" spin off....

If you are upset that CBS cancelled Smith, consider filing a complaint.
With enough viewer complaints, CBS may reconsider its cancelling of the marvelous fast-paced Smith with its excellent cast including Ray Liotta, Virginia Madsen, Simon Baker and Amy Smart and the show's superb writing.
Blame it on CBS's bad marketing, its only giving the show three episodes of airtime, and CBS's lack of promoting online viewing of earlier episodes of Smith for those who needed to catch up.
CBS could have given a better re-cap at the beginning of episodes for new viewers just tuning in. It could have re-run the episodes during off-hours, much like Bravo does, to allow viewers to catch up.
To complain, call CBS viewer relations at any time day or night to leave a message, or, to reach a live person, call during the hours of 10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. EST - telephone CBS viewer relations at 212-975-3247.
You may also email audsvcs@cbs.com (short for audience services).
You may also go to CBS's feedback form online to submit your complaint at http://www.cbs.com/info/user_services/fb_global_form.shtml Smith is still listed in the shows on that feedback form.
You may also sign this online petition to CBS to bring back Smith. http://www.petitiononline.com/cbssmith/petition.html
You can also vote that you thought Smith was a great show by going to the first official Smith fansite http://www.smith-on-cbs.com/ and voting on the question "What's Your Opinion Regarding Smith's Cancellation?"

The show was excellent. Does anyone out there knows where can I download each episode of "SMITH" from the web? Any ideas. Thanks for any feedback.
