After it was announced that Stargate SG-1 had been cancelled there was word from MGM that this wasn't the end of the Stargate franchise. Much of that sounded like typical PR speak to be taken with a grain of salt, but MGM wasn't just jerking our chains. They have ordered two Stargate SG-1 movies which will be released direct to DVD, with the possibility of also being shown on cable TV. Plans call for a fall 2007 release.Executive Producer Brad Wright comments that they are "not big budget" which makes me think that they will be more or less prolonged episodes. But there's nothing wrong with that. The first of the two movies will tie up the current Ori storyline while the second is reported to be about time travel. The Gateworld article also mentions the possibility that the movies could be used as a launching pad for a third Stargate series.
It will be interesting to see how the movies end up performing for MGM. The idea of making a show that goes straight to DVD and online sales with no first run broadcast component is one that has been around for a while. It was mentioned after the cancellations of Firefly, Farscape, and Arrested Development, to name a few. This isn't exactly a series jumping in that pool, but could go a long way to proving the viability of that idea. Season 10 of SG-1 will resume in March on SciFi.

Wow, this is such old news, at least a week old.
Anyways I HATE the idea of a thirs series might come from this. The second is supposed to deal with time travel. Are we going to have a time traveling show? Plus Atlantis needs to be on its own for awhile. Plus they really need to hire some new writers to come up with new ideas.

I agree that this is pretty old news, but a lot of people might not have seen it, so the more places it's reported, the better.
What I find strange about this direct-to-DVD release business is how the SciFi Channel has said in the past they'd be interested in another Stargate series, but the current SG1 was just too expensive. If that's true, one would think SciFi would be eager to pick up these movies for a first-run on their network considering the second may be purposed towards the creation of a 3rd series in the franchise. Either way, I'm glad SG1 will continue on in any form, but I wouldn't be too sad if all it did was create another series, either. It just seems like SciFi Channel would've been the place for all this, but decisions in "televisionland" always confuse the hell out of me.

personally i hope a network picks up sg1 again because i cant see sg1 stopping its just really getting into a flow again argggg....
As for the time travel this is required for a good reason... remember back in the early sg1 they had some mishaps that they went into the past and then they had to jump into the gate at the exact millisecond to get back home... and they eneded up a few seconds late and went into the future and met some old woman that was actually some young girl i forget the exact plot... but she said that we would understand and find out more of what it all meant but they had to go for now... its a long distance call back and what stargate is known for those inter episode and season conncetions... and i've been dieing for that one to be picked up but it never was... its good to see this and i hope thats what they plan on spinning for the second movie
I MUST SAY... i thought the 2 movie idea at the end was a bad idea but its better than nothing, just like with farscape had they not done the 2 war episodes afterwarsds it would have beena disaster but suprisingly they tied the show up relatively nicely.

The Movies will be great only if they ditch the deadwood that joined in season 9 and bring back general hammond and Jack O'Neill!! Otherwise why waste the money on it! The show jumped the shark with the departure of Richard Dean Anderson.

I've always loved time travel stories, but I wouldn't want the 3rd Stargate series to become another Quantum Leap, or Time Cop, or Back to the Future...it would have to be something quite unique for the franchise to warrant its existance. Being a time travel series, it could probably have Daniel Jackson as its main character, which would be good and give us a link to the original show. I always thought that General Hammond in space would've made a good series, but they passed on that idea it seems, probably because it would've been too much like the Star Trek franchises.
