(S03E04) Because I saw these first five episodes on DVD, I wasn't subject to spoilers of what was to come in the next episode. I really do feel for everyone who sat and watched the preview for this week, only to be disappointed to learn that Pegasus comes to the rescue. While, really, this was something that seemed pretty inevitable anyway, it was still a bummer to have it told to you ahead of time. And even then, the preview was referring to the decoy. But who the hell is it that decides what's good to show for a preview every week?
Is anyone a bit weirded out at seeing Lee and Dualla as husband and wife? It just seems odd. Her personality just doesn't seem to fit with Lee's, and vice versa. God I yearn for the old days when Apollo was heading fleets of fighters against fleets of Raiders. But this Apollo? Hard to imagine.
The scene with Saul and Ellen was heartbreaking. The fact that she thought everything would be OK, that what she did would be so easily overlooked in the scheme of things, because love between two people is more important than the lives of the many. I was actually surprised to not see more people guessing at Ellen's death in the comments from last week, especially with Saul's hardened attitude (he does look like an old salt now, doesn't he?) and the pressure put on him from the rest of the men.
The conversation between Baltar and Number Three brought up an interesting point -- will the battle between Cylon and Human ever really end? It seems the only outcome that would be satisfactory to both parties is either utter destruction of the opposing group or complete control of it. But I think what's meant to happen in this series is an eventual united group, possibly against a common enemy. Gosh, imagine if they have to unite to fight ... Earth? Hey, it could happen.
How incredibly cool was it to see Galactica jump into the atmosphere of New Caprica? The size of that beast plunging through the air must have struck fear into the batteries of the Cylons.
For those who doubted Starbuck's feelings for Kacey, I think her reaction when she's rescued were pretty definitive of how she really felt. Then, when Kacey finds her real mother, you can still see the disappointment in Starbuck's eyes. All the whole thing really did was make her hate the Cylons with even more rage than before, if that were possible.
Speaking of Kacey's mom, the Leoben Cylon did say that they used a human to bring Kacey to term (even though she's somehow many years older than she should be), so could this simply mean that this is the woman who did that, and Starbuck really is the genetic mother of the girl? Probably not.
Gaeta stepped up to the plate, though Baltar throws him for a loop -- does he decide to believe there's a nuke in the facility or just kill him and feel all warm and fuzzy about it? Well he wouldn't be Gaeta if he'd have shot him, would he?
Pegasus, oh Pegasus, we hardly knew ye. As sad as it was to see her go, she went out in the best way possible, wouldn't you say? The battle sequence here was of perfect length I think. Any longer and it'd be overdrawn. I would have accompanied this post with that awesome shot of the Pegasus scrap flying though space to hit the Base Star, but the backlash from the spoiler police would've been brutal.
You have to wonder now what's to become of Hera, the hybrid baby. Will the writers of the show decide to jump us ahead many years again, where Hera is ruling over the Cylons or a whole new race of beings? I really hope we don't keep jumping ahead, to be honest. But hey, it really did work this time around, so anything's possible.
Random thought: Does Adama grow a moustache and not shave it until a crucial mission is over, like hockey players do not shaving their beards in case it jinxes their winning streak?
Next week, a little spoiler for you, so don't read on if you don't want to know ... [deleted due to people complaining that they didn't heed the previous warning. Check back on Spoilers Anonymous for what would have gone here]

This was, for me, a landmark episode. I can't recall ever having a show tear me up and down emotionally like this episode did (only Firefly can even compete). To have such a moment of triumph brought to a screeching halt with Ellen's death and Kacey being torn from Kara. Oh gods, I'm getting emotional just thinking about it again.

Holy fraking hell that was the most awesome show EVAR!
if it doens't get an Emmy it's a freaking fix. There is no way ANTHING including Lost could have beaten that. I was on the edge of my seat shouting for gods sake. I even punched the air when they got off.
Woah.

I agree - from Tigh's last moments with his wife to the minutes to where the Galactica jumped into the planet's atmosphere, this episode rocked, bringing all the energy from the first three episodes right up. That 10-20 minute period where the Galactica jumped in to the Pegasus's death was probably the best moments of TV action that we'll ever see.

That was some fine freaking TV. One of the finest episodes of the entire series... any series, even. So glad to see they've still got it in them to knock our socks off!
I'm even watching the episode this second time in a row and still staring jaw-agape at the Galactica falling into the atmosphere and then jumping forward. Not even to mention all the heart-breaking character moments. Just wow.

I believe that was the most amazing, heartwrenching, action-packed show I have ever frakin' seen. I nearly exploded when the Galactica jumped into the atmosphere. At, first, I thought it was a viper, but when I realized what it was...!!! Best special effect ever! I don't think anything I ever see again will compare to that.

Absolutely incredible use of sfx. That episode alone should, hands down, win an Emmy for effects. The atmospheric jump and viper launch looked incredible and the Pegasus' destruction... wow! My jaw was on the floor for the whole battle sequence. I was a little bummed about how quickly Kacey's real mom bumped into Starbuck within minutes of landing on the ship. It was just too convenient. Otherwise, a shining example of this show's superiority. I love how the New Caprica arc seemed like it would be a long term thing and here it is over at the start. Totally unexpected.

I have to say, this was by far one of the best Galactica episodes ever. Just when you think they cannot set the bar higher, they raise it a foot and laugh at our disbelief.
I disagree with Keith about dropping the bomb in the previews that Pegasus was there (even if they tried to fool us with the decoys) was bad. Everyone knew that Pegasus was going to be involved, given the type of battle, what was at stake and Lee's attitude about having to take the fleet and run. I thought it was great that the writers took this and ran with and produced a great story for it.
Galactica dropping to the ground and FTL'ing away was incredible.
Just wanted to point out that we're assuming Ellen is dead. I'm wondering if she was knocked out? I doubt every human alive got off the planet, nor was every ship used. I'm wondering if we'll see more about this?

BTW Keith, they said her birth mother died, which I think is kinda the way it goes with the birthing farms. They clearly just lied about her being Starbuck's child to twist her mind.
Leoben is the deceit and manpuliation model. Each model seems to have a specific purpose/line of work.

I am glad to be able to watch this epic story unfold. Did anyone else think that Adama should have kept his new style? He looked quite dapper. I was thinking about the skinjobs the found the map on where they models we hadn't seen before? I will miss pegasus even though it was ugly they lost a lot of capability with it. Wouldn't it be sweet if they found some other ship or were able to upgrade good ole Galactica.

i could have seen losing the galactica and then renaming the pegasus after it.
I can just see it, PEGASUS crossed out with a big X and under it a big scrawled "GALACTICA". That would have rocked.

I agree with #9 about Pegasus. The fact is, I missed the previews last week. But as this episode aired, it was completely obvious to my roommate and I that Pegasus was going to FTL in at any moment. What was NOT obvious was the destruction of the ship - that caught us off guard.
As to Ellen, I feel like its a safe bet she's dead. That isn't to say her story line is over, necessarily, but I think she is deceased, no more, an ex-Ellen. I don't think BSG writers are so heartless as to bring her back after such an emotional death scene.
I also agree with #8 about the spoiler. Thank you, I don't want that.

I deleted the spoiler, since for some reason the warning I left just wasn't enough to tell you what was coming next.
I also deleted the comment calling me an asshole for it. How much fricken warning do you need?

WOW. This seriously may have been the best episode of an scifi who that I've ever seen. Action packed, great writing, heart wrenching, wonderful acting. WOW. At the end w/Tigh and Starbuck and looks on their faces. I had a tear in my eye. It was absolutely amazing from beginning to end.
The really amazing part is that it just keeps getting better every week. The previews for next week show people taking matters into their own hands. VERY cool. Can't wait to see more!!

LOL!! You can print a warning saying "Don't eat this, it's poison and will kill you" and there is always some dummy that will eat it.
Great episode. Now that the Pegasus is gone, I wonder if Lee would be bumbped down to leading the Viper fleet? I suppose that is rhetorical, but he is the commander. In any event, he will be dropping the fake pounds now and getting back into fighting shape.
Next weeks episode looks interesting, but it seems like Gaeta(sp?) will have an easy way out. All he has to do is tell the chief about flipping the dog's dish.
I also take exception to Gaeta finally stepping up to the plate. He had been stepping up all along, since he was the one feeding the resistance the valuable intel that they needed all along.

Wasn't the "PEGASUS" captained by (Lloyd Bridges) destroyed in the orginal series not long after it rejoined the "Galactica" only this time the captain and crew were not lost?...
Hmm seems I remember that...Hmmm

In the original series, the Pegasus was in just two episodes (one two parter). While it's implied that the Pegasus was destroyed in part 2, that was never actually stated on screen. Cain took it into battle against several Cylon base ships to allow Galactica to escape. Presumably had the original had any sort of further seasons (it actually only ran ONE), we likely would have seen the Pegasus again.

So basically we are seeing a bit of "Taking from the old" (Rehashing some ideas) and adding to the "new" here... Since the "Pegasus" was again destroyed...
I wonder what Duke Nukem would have done in this situtation?... hmmm... hehehehe

Keith McD, dont let these putzes get to you. You gave proper warning, if an idiot reads it, that is there fault.
Keith L, (too add to Joe S) The Pegasus in the first series dissapeared in a giant explosion going at close range against 2 basestars. Its actual fate was never known. A spin off series was actual thought of for the Pegasus out on its own.
To those who think Ellen may not be dead, I am sorry. But she is gone. The emotion Tigh went through when he killed her and then again at the end was truthful of the fact that she is gone. Notice the pain of loss that both he and Starbuck shared.
The cylons have Hera now. Fan-frakin-tastic. My money on that? The president is going to tell Adama what she did and he is then going to tell Sharon and Helo and then the shit is going to hit the fan.
That was a great episode and an awesome build up from the last 3.
Dorv, sorry Heras adoptive mom is dead. She was indeed easy on the eyes.
