Apparently there have been rumors swirling that T.R. Knight, who plays George O'Malley on Grey's Anatomy, is gay. Today, Knight released a statement to People magazine, saying he is gay and "I hope the fact that I'm gay isn't the most interesting part of me." People's headline is grotesque: EXCLUSIVE: Grey's Anatomy Star T.R. Knight Confirms He's Gay. WTF?
Why is this a big deal? Does it change the fact that he does a spectacular job playing the role of George, who is madly in love with Meredith Grey? I feel sorry for the guy because it sounds like he was hounded and badgered about something that really shouldn't matter to anyone.

Didn't you get the memo? Apparently gay actors have to play gay characters.

"Why does it matter that T.R. Knight is gay?"
Because idiots care about that crap, I don't go around asking about what possitions use when having sex, 'cause to tell you the truth I don't care, it's annoting, and this comes from a girl that's thought to to be gay, I trully don't care about peoples sex life, it's their not mine to care.
There also an old saying over here wich is my life's moto: "La gente hace de su culo un florero..." wich roughly translates to: "People make vassel of their ass..." I ussually top it of with it's their problem who stiks a flower in it...

Actually it was rumored that the fight between Isaiah Washington and Patrick Dempsey is about. Isaiah allegedly used a derogatory term for a homosexual when referring to him.

Dude, it doesn't matter. Get the hell over it.
But, if the story is true, and Dempsey took shot at Washington for it, I say good for him.

I agree that his sexual orientation is completely irrelevant and it's really nobody's business. He's an actor, for crying out loud, not some kind of a sex worker. About the only time I would be interested in someone's sexual preferences is if I were going to have sex with them, otherwise it's a non-issue.

I'll tell you why it matters; because the good ones always end up gay. Dammit! He can play any role he wants, I buy it. But I still think its a bummer that the boys get another good 'un, while the girls are stuck with the likes of Isaih Washington, who is seemingly a creep.

I saw this as T.R. Knight taking control of the gossip--the story was sort of already out with the Washington/Dempsey fight, as a commenter above pointed out. Of course it doesn't matter to his performance. But I think it's great that an actor on a number one show doesn't want to hide that he's gay.

I'm upset because he's the hottest guy on the show by far and, while gay myself, I have terrible luck with gay guys... my odds were better when I still thought he was straight. :-

LOL Scott, I agree!
Yeah, I mean seriously...it's like damn, who cares?! Funny, I never see any headlines saying...
"EXCLUSIVE: Breaking News: Story of the Year: OMFGBBQ!! Tom Cruise is Straight!"
So yeah, it's a non-issue.
BTW...
Exclusive: I am gay.

IT MATTERS!! simply because tv shows are fantasy, but its a fantasy that we must still buy into.
The fact that Knight is gay will make fans of his character UNABLE to buy into the fact that he is in love with meredith, or any other woman he has an interaction with.
I have nothing against gay people, but gay guys playing straight characters in such campy shows shouldnt come out, until the series is over, otherwise the popularity of their STRAIGHT character will surely plummett.
If Edward James Olmos comes out as gay, that would be the END of BSG, or at least his character.
Same goes for Picard, and most of the male characters in Lost etc..
Just watch and see, he wont make it to the finale, 5 years from now, unless, ofcourse, his character 'turns' gay.

So Brokeback Mountain must not have worked for you because you knew Jake and Heath were straight, right?
Please attempt to broaden your sense of imagination.
He's not a doctor, either. Did that just ruin the show for you?

Joseph: if you read my post, it mainly refers to CAMPY shows like Grey's. Not movies, or hardcore serious dramas (and even some comedies).

The real question regarding Knight's sexual orientation shouldn't be what it is, but why it matters. Frankly, any person's sexual choice shouldn't matter unless you're about to get intimate or it's illegal, as far as I'm concerned.
I also don't think it should matter that there is a gay actor playing a role that includes a heterosexual romance, such as Knight is doing on "Grey's Anatomy." After all, how many professed heterosexual actors have portrayed gays -- Brokeback Mountain anyone? I mean, it is called a-c-t-i-n-g.

I'm only affected by Isaiah Washington's homophobia and whether this disharmony would affect the show.

I agree with Michelle. Why does it matter that he is gay? I am still going to watch the show regardless and the fact that he is gay is not going to make his character any less believable for me.

Oprea isn't a lesbian, just had to come out and say that.
Everytime some actor or actress comes out and say they are or are not gay sickens me.
In this case it most likely matters to ABC because then all the women watching the show can't can't sleep with him, because they all have the if he was straight.

Frankly, that's their problem.
If this was reversed, and we had a straight actor playing a gay man, this probably wouldn't be an issue. (Which, I guess, is sort of progress, in a way.) So in real life Knight wouldn't Pompeo. So what? In real life, he's also not a doctor. Does knowing the actor didn't go to medical school ruin the show for you?
It's ridiculous. Who cares?

Meant to write "in real life Knight wouldn't [fall in love with] Pompeo"...although you can fill in any verb you and your naughty minds would care to.
(Full disclosure: never seen an episode of "Grey's Anatomy". Also, straight.)

Everyone seems to be spouting that they don't care and neither should anyone else. How we also not care about whatever Washington might have said about it. Last time I checked, whatever he might have said doesnt affect his acting right?
Lastly, can people start tossing around correct terms when attempting to pass some sort of moral superior judgement. Someone using a derogatory term for describing a gay person (I'm guessing faggot?) doesn't mean they're homophobic. It usually means they just don't care to be politically correct. Pretty sure that doesn't affect the acting so people should stop caring.
