Dancing with the Stars: Week 6

Sara Evans(S04E11) Well, this was the show everyone was waiting for. What would they do now that Sara Evans has quit the show? Apparently, add more filler. I haven't been timing them, but it seemed like the pre-dance packages were longer this week. But if you have to stretch to fill time, having the pros come out to do every style of dance on the show is a good way to do it. The show is about the celebrities, but the pros are what makes it go. And it's nice to get to see them do their thing every once in a while. They are a crazy talented bunch.

As to Sara, they teased it for 83 minutes before finally getting to Tom's interview. I didn't expect Tom to go all Ed Bradley on Sara asking about the divorce, the hard drive, etc. There wasn't anything covered that hasn't been in all the reports going around. She explained her side of everything well and you can't fault her for dropping out. What they didn't reveal is how the show will deal with Sara leaving early. We'll have to tune in tomorrow to find that out. For now, on with the show.

Mario & KarinaMario & Karina (Mambo) - This was the kind of thing that Mario really excels at. I think they were playing up just how hard it was for him in the weekly package. Their performance was really impressive. I particularly liked the move holding Karina's head and stepping over while Mario switched hands. Very slick. Mario continues to be the front-runner. The judges are in disagreement. Len didn't think Mario kept his focus, Carrie thought Mario needs to relax, and Bruno loved it. The scores, 9 - 9 - 10. That's a good score for them.

Monique & Louis (Samba) - The video package for them this week made me awfully curious about the crumping solo. Unfortunately, I think the idea and practice of the solo came off better than the finished product. It seemed unfinished and rushed. Once she got back together with Louis though, the performance picked up. Great energy. I think Monique is the performer that has really grown the most in the contest. The judges disagree again. Carrie is impressed, but Bruno and Len both criticize them for not having enough Samba in the choreography. The scores 9 - 7 - 7. DANG! Someone found the 7 paddles. I wondered after last week.

Joey & EdytaJoey & Edyta (Rumba) - Very funny video for these two this week with Joey's wife. Holy smokes with the Edyta silhouette to start. Odd that they end up with George Michael songs two weeks in a row. The lip syncing was a bad idea, but it came together well after that. Joey has really loosened up as the competition has gone on. He's much more expressive. Bruno likes the dirty dancing, but wants more with the arms, Carrie also hated the microphone (YAY) but liked the dancing, and Len thought it was "right on the money." The scores - 8 - 8 - 8. Maybe I'm just smitten with Edyta, but I thought the scores were low for these two again.

Emmit & CherylEmmitt & Cheryl (Jive) - Cheryl had a great dress tonight. Very cute. I was concerned about whether Emmitt had the speed for the jive. He certainly seemed to hold his own. He moves very well for such a big guy. Great finish too with Emmitt sliding across the floor. They seemed to be the most traditional performance of the night. The judges are mostly positive. Len calls Emmitt on getting off time but likes it, Bruno loved it, and Carrie digs them for execution. The scores, 8 - 8 - 9.

Jerry & Kym (Pasa Doble) - Oh my. Where to start? Kym looked great, and danced beautifully. This was the first week that I felt like Jerry wasn't even really trying. He's counting on getting by being the DWTS jester. It's starting to remind me of the Chris Farley Chippendale's schtick. The judges finally call Jerry on not actually being able to dance with Bruno mentioning how he has massacred every dance. The scores, 7 - 6 - 5. Fair scores, but I do have to wonder where those scores were last week.

After all the performances we got the big disco group performance. Aside from the fact that the behind the scenes stuff was longer than the actual performance, it was good. Impressive lift from Emmitt and Cheryl. Monique and Louis matched it with one of their own. Joey's cartwheel left a little to be desired. Overall, very fun though.

A good night of dancing overall. I thought it was a little silly to not clear up the Sara thing once and for all. Tomorrow's show is going to get top ten ratings either way, so why bother dragging it out?

Best of the night - Mario & Karina

Going home (assuming someone is going home) - It's time for Jerry to go.
