Desperate Housewives: Like It Was

desperate housewives(S03E04) Well, this was certainly a fun week on Wisteria Lane! I love the ending premise that no matter what is going on, we can write our own histories. Now, I know what you're thinking: That is also a phenomenon commonly known as denial. But it can also be known as saving face and muddling through. What do y'all think of the fact that Mike can't remember Susan? So, does this mean that he is going to end up with Edie? And what does this mean for Susan? Is she going to try to win Mike back, or just continue hanging out with Ian? The next step will be Ian's wife waking up. But it seems pretty clear that Susan and Ian are just a flash in the pan, or a roll in the hay, and that their romance will be pretty short-lived. I don't really think Mike's waking up is going to test Susan and Ian's relationship. I think it's going to end it.

Bree's kids are like a pushme-pullyou: If one of them has their act together, the other one falls apart. And how sad is it that now that Andrew is off the streets, I view him as the one who has his act together? Sure, he's sleeping with rich, married doctors whose wives re-write history, but do kind of think that is better than a teenage girl sleeping with her history teacher. And I think that is because Andrew has already endured so much that his life is pretty much not going to follow a trajectory of education, regular job, etc. But Bree's daughter? Well, okay, I think maybe you could make a valid point that they're both pretty messed up. And why is Andrew suddenly telling Bree that she wasn't such a bad mother after all? Yeah, if I were Bree, I'd want to believe that, too.

I continue to be entertained by Carlos and Gabrielle -- maybe it's because I do think they still love each other. Because they are still under each other's skin: Why do they spend so much time trying to hurt each other? Why do they spend so much energy thinking about each other and spending time with each other, even if it's so they can sabotage each other? I mean, I do think their storyline also provides a comic angle to the show, but it also reflects how difficult and complicated relationships are in the sense that you can't just shut your emotions off when a relationship supposedly ends. Do relationships ever end, or do they just change shape?

Before I started writing this review, I was going to write that I didn't know what was up with Lynette this week. I was going to be judgmental and say that I would never have done anything like bribing my kid's coach or bribing a pitcher so my kid could have a hit. Except that then I realized that last week, I did almost exactly that. I was at a Renaissance Fair with my kids, and one of my kids was having a really bad day, for a variety of reasons. So, I was trying to cheer him up by trying to win him a toy. And I spent a ridiculous amount of money throwing coconuts at pirate heads, throwing darts at stickers, and playing skeet ball, until the skeet ball girl took pity on me and just gave me a toy. I had pretty much already bought the thing many things over. And that was still cheating and trying to buy an experience rather than have a genuine one. So, even though I may not have acted exactly that way, I can't say that I don't understand the urge to try to do things for our kids-- even if we aren't making the best choices at the time. The show is called Desperate Housewives for a reason.

Orson hanging out outside Mike's hospital room, by the way, makes me wonder anew whether or not he really did kill his wife. After all, he did run over Mike twice. Damn. It would be so much more interesting if he were actually innocent of something.
