The complete first season of the venerable late night comedy series Saturday Night Live will be released on DVD on December 5. The series that launched the careers of innumerable comedians and started more debates about which cast sucked more first hit the airwaves in 1975 with a cast that included John Belushi, Gilda Radner, Chevy Chase, Dan Aykroyd, Jane Curtain, Garrett Morris and Laraine Newman. The coolest thing about this eight-disc set is that every episode will be completely uncut, that means musical performances and everything. The first season also featured special guest hosts such as Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Lily Tomlin and Candace Bergen. Extras will include the original screen tests of each of the actors, and a special photo booklet. Hopefully subsequent seasons will follow so younger generations like myself can have access to the seasons we grew up with.
Update: Muppet News Flash points out that the set will also include the "Land of Gorch" segments featuring Jim Henson's Muppets.

It would have been a licensing nightmare to get clearance for all the actors involved much less beginning to address the music issues.

This will be great! I wasn't alive in 1975 so my exposure to the early SNL was via Nickelodeon and other syndicated reruns -- and even then I was too young to really understand the humor. When E! aired the original episodes, they were always edited down to an hour, so the Albert Brooks films and other segments (like the Muppets) would typically get cut out. DVD will be my first opportunity to see the original cast uncut. Very, very cool.

So, how long until the reports start popping up that the set isn't really uncut? I'm betting on a week. It would be nice if it really was COMPLETELY uncut, but SNL has a history of controversial moments that are never seen again and sketches that are quietly replaced with versions recorded during dress rehearsals and more than likely, something will be off about these episodes.

I think it'll be interesting to see these, because the balance between Comedy/Music/and Film segments varied a lot during the first season, while they tried to find the formula that worked. There's even an episode with a Simon and Garfunkel reunion where the Not-Ready for Prime Time Players are virtually guests on their own show.

This is awesome, but only if it's genuinely 'uncut', as some already said. I can see myself buying up the first couple of seasons as well as the Eddie Murphy & Billy Crystal/Martin Short years...
