Supernatural: Bloodlust

Amber Benson(S02E03) Supernatural does music better than just about anyone, and this week's episode started with two great songs. Wheels In The Sky over the previously on scenes, and then Back In Black to reintroduce the Impala. Very slick. I thought coming in that we would probably get an episode that dropped the overall arc in favor of a creature of the week show. For the most part, that's what we got. There was a much more relaxed vibe as we got into this episode.

The big setup scene with the girl running from the baddie reminded me of the Friday the 13th movies. Right up until the baddie started sprinting anyway. Jason, while a killing machine, is more tortoise, less hare. Of course the beauty of this scene was revealed later. After Dean and Sam run their Weekly World News scam (HA!), they get into the morgue to get a look at the girls head, and what do you know, she's a vampire. Cool special effects shot with the fang too. Suddenly everything we saw in the opening is flipped around.

Gordon (Sterling K. Brown) is an interesting character. He served as a good standard to compare the differences in Dean and Sam. I think this episode does a lot to show just what it is that they get from each other. That was also a nice scene when Dean was talking about how he isn't handling John's death very well. Of course, then it all went to hell. Because Gordon is one twisted dude.

I didn't think we really needed the scene with Ellen (Samantha Ferris) at the Roadhouse to clue us in to Gordon being dangerous, but I guess it was there to show us that the Roadhouse gang is a part of this season. And that led to Sam being nabbed by the vampires. Two great things about that little development.

First, Amber freaking Benson! I'm a long time Buffy fan, so it was great to see her again. And even better to see her playing a vampire. She did a nice job as Lenore. The other thing I really liked about it was the twist that they were not killing people, going the opposite direction we thought again. It made for a great scene between Sam and Dean where Sam corrects him that they fight evil.

It was pretty clear from the preview last week that there would be some kind of a showdown with Gordon and Dean, and it didn't disappoint. Great reaction from Dean when Gordon picks his knife back up. And funniest line of the night, "How ya doin' Gordy? Gotta tinkle yet?" The Winchester's have clearly made an enemy, and I'm guessing we'll be seeing more of Gordon later. Hopefully they'll cross paths with Lenore again too. I'm always up for more Amber Benson.

Not a lot of big picture story here, even though they did tease us with that "Did dad tell you anything?" clip in the opening, but still a really good episode. Season two is rolling along very nicely.
