(S03E13) Damn it. Why must they tease us? This episode had nothing. Nothing. They should have just made tonight a two-hour special, declared the winner, and put us out of our anxious, hand-wringing misery. But no. We have to wait until next week to find out the Season Three winner.
We didn't even get to the bottom of the Laura/Jeffrey scandal (which wasn't as exciting as I hoped)! It's a double-cliffhanger, folks, the very worst kind of cliffhanger.
Tim Gunn visited each of the designers to check on their progress. Michael (with his new braces and all) really felt the time crunch and was told to make his collection more cohesive. His family seemed lovely, proudly showing their support for Michael. Laura, very pregnant but still looking great, welcomed Tim to her beautiful home. If I hadn't seen her audition video before, I would have expected her children to be dressed in tiny suits 24/7... Like, constantly in uniform. Of course, her boys are regular boys... Loud and hyper and wild, with a penchant for offering turtle poop to hapless guests (heh, poor Tim). Uli shared a bit of her history with Tim, briefly talking about her childhood in East Germany. That was pretty surprising. We also got to see Jeffrey play daddy a bit and talk about his drug-laced history (five years clean... good work, man).
The visits went fairly smoothly, with a few suggestions here and there. The only collection that seemed to have trouble was Michael's... He got an "oy" from Tim. An "oy" is never good. Tim checked on the designers again when everyone returned to New York for Fashion Week. Laura, Uli, and Michael still had final touches to finish, but Jeffrey spent most of his time relaxing because everything was done. This made the other designers (mainly Laura) suspicious. The craftsmanship on his garments was top-notch and a far cry from the level of work Jeffrey displayed earlier in the season. So, Laura talked to Tim about it, and he promised to talk to the producers. When Laura told Jeffrey what she had done, he was both angry and offended. He continued to insist that he had done all the work (except for a bit of pleating in one or two pieces) and stuck by his story when Tim talked to him about it.
But we won't find out the outcome -- of the scandal or the competition -- until next week. Because Project Runway loves screwing with our minds. Bastards.
I don't think Jeffrey's in any trouble. After all, the previews make it seem like Jeffrey is going to get kicked out... At this point, I'm smart enough to know that the truth is always the exact opposite of what the previews suggest.
Is it Wednesday yet?

Actually, I don't think they could air a two hour special because they are still editing the last episode. Fashion week and the reunion were only a couple weeks ago, so they've probably locked up the editors in a small room with a toilet and a vending machine so they can get the episodes put together in time for the air dates.

As Laura said when the show started last night "....just as long as Jeffrey doesn't win".....she's green.

I agree...well, I don't know if it's so much that I agree or more that I think that Laura was being bitchy and I think Jeffrey should win. Come on, they have plenty of time to finish everything if they work a lot and he had a LOT done when Tim came to visit.
He seems to have a lot of talent with pants (think about the skinny black ones he made)...why wouldn't you think he could make an awesome pair if given the time?
Plus, he is one of the only designers who fashion design for a living...maybe he is just more efficient.

I suspect that Jeffrey is innocent, but even if Laura turns out to be right, it was still a pretty petty thing to do. After all, even Joseph McCarthy got lucky sometimes and hit a communist or too. It had little to do with why he initiated his witchhunt. Quite frankly, if it weren't Jeffrey, I'm sure she'd be going after someone else. Just the kind of person she is. In any event, it seems quite evident to me that Jeffrey has the most talent of the remaining four (though I have to admit I'm partial to Uli's designs as well). Which might explain why he finished so quickly; less time lost on design and more left for implementation. Erik

I was completely fooled. I thought this WAS the finale. They even have Top Chef starting next Wednesday (though at 11, not 10), so I was clueless that they'd leave us hanging like that. Very disappointing. Bring on the chefs!

Laura's craftsmanship is so important to her that I have to think she can judge what's possible to do in two months and what isn't. Tim, by the way, has implied that he thinks the amount of detail Jeffrey was able to accomplish is pretty suspicious too. I think Laura has been scrupulously fair and honest--at least what we've seen on camera--so I'm very much disinclined to think that this is a vendetta or sour grapes.

i was disgusted by the turn in the program last night.
it is typical of artists. the controversy was about
jealousy and anxiety. many artists apply the "dog eat dog" rule w their fellow artists.
I was not suspicious at all of Jeffrey, at the end of the evening. I was sad that Laura played the "card".
Her character is not as classy as her clothes. She has a lot of work to do on herself.
She brought the whole crowd with her: getting them to be swaying into examining their fellow designer's seams and etc so that she could put one of the designer's into a bad funk, just when the pressure was on...to think through his clean and clear presentation.
Poor Laura, she should have kept her paranoia, jealousy and bad manners to herself.
You can read my book, The Artists' Survival Manual, which Scribner's published in 1984 and which is still in print..in the section on Personal Problems: where I talk about Artists being unkind to each other.
Sometimes this happens. Good luck, Jeffrey..from Klayman

Klayman: Is this a post about the show or a shameless plug for your book and website?
There was an article of the PR accusation in some
magazine I can't recall at the moment. Laura and Jeffrey's moms becames friends after the family challenge. Apparently Jeffrey's mom had told Laura's mom Jeffrey that he still had a lot of work to do a few weeks before Fashion week. Then somehow he miraculously finished it all beforehand, that's why Laura was more inclined to believe Jeffrey cheated. I will post it if I find it.

my opinion is valuable. it just so happens that my book includes something about the topic. i love to quote myself. go to the library and read my book. you dont have to buy it. the gossip between the two Moms doesnt really interest me at all. Gossip is dangerous. I guess Jeffrey's Mom should have not participated in it (gossip).

thanks for article. i think the show itself is great.
gunn has a very interesting role. I understand him as I taught painting in a college for 29 years. Critiques are hard. Gunn has done a very good job.
I just hope that Jeffrey isnt lying about his work.I dont believe he is.

Jeffery clearly stated that he new there would be some sort of twist when they got back to new york and worked to make sure that he had nothing to do while he was there. Remember last year how they screwed with the contestants? He really made the decision to not have any work to do .

I'm liking Jeffery, and the thing that I thought was dumb in regards to the jeans is that him being a designer with a forte towards rock, they were the garment I was most expecting to be perfect. I mean, for the Paris challenge, he made himself the pants pretty damn quick and from what we could see, they looked good. A lot of his work seems to revolve around that sort of stuff, so to me it's not suspicious at all.
That and the be honest, compared to Laura's work, for better or for worse, Jeffery's is simpler, and hence, he can afford to spend more time just doing a good job on the basics.
Michael's work I'm shocked that it's so tacky, and Uli's, which I never was a fan of, doesn't seem all that amazing as well.
I can see why Jeffery pushed himself. The extra challenge almost killed Santino last season, and like he said, it's Bryant Park, so you have to give it the respect it deserves.
That said, I hope the preview at the end with Jeffery crying was just a ploy to have some more drama.

I think Laura's concerns were valid. It's a competition, and it's kind of like the drama with the shoes in season one. Any unfair advantage is one that is unacceptable. Nobody called Kaine a bitch when he found Keith's books, and Keith was rightfully kicked off. And it's not like she was the only one who had suspicions, Michael thought so too. I think Laura's just making sure that it's a level playing field, and i think she did it in the classiest way that she could. Remember, the producers have been able to edit it to make it seem more dramatic than it really was.

I think Laura is jealous and paranoid. She didn't expect Jeffrey's collection to look so good and so finished. He does this for a living and has access to commercial grade equipment which apparently is NOT against any PR rules. I can not imagine that Jeffrey would do something so blatant as to have someone else sew for him. Besides, Jeffrey's ego is so big, I don't think he would let anyone sew for him.
I didn't like Jeffrey in the beginning and counted Laura as one of my favorites. Now, with her behavior, I sincerely hope she doesn't win and is called out as the hostile, paranoid bitch she loves to be.

I wonder why no one, in all the blog about Runway, has noticed that Laura's designs have been simple A-line dresses (w/the exception of the pants/tie top she did to update a Katherine Hepburn look), with baubles and feathers attached. Now anyone who had to take sewing at some point knows that you sew A-line (i.e., straight) skirts first, because they're the simplest. That's all she's done (Uli as well) -- well because the construction's so simple on that straight silhouette one could finish it impeccably -- while Jeffrey's attempted far more complicated designs and finished them under the ridiculous time constraints of the show. So Laura blows the proverbial whistle since she's angry that Jeffrey's managed to not only fashion intricate designs but finished them, while she's still sewing baubles on her A-line glitz-studded outfits. Why doesn't the show, since it's supposed to be about design, bring this up, thus teaching its audience something substantive about the art of fashion design? Oh, right, it's TV -- ratings rule.
