(S01E01) Hel-lo! I think we have a hit! Out of all the new shows on television this fall, I'd say 30 Rock is the best new comedy. There's no mugging for the camera and no canned laughter or sitcom audience. The comedy is quick and witty... and Tina Fey's self deprecating character makes a terrific central figure in the show. (NBC Message board reviews are mixed)
Before I go any further, I'd like to call for an all-out moratorium on comparing 30 Rock to Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. It should be obvious that they are not the same show. Yes, there's a similar premise of people coming in to stir up production of a show, but that's where the similarities end.
There is a handful of great characters here, all with immense comedic potential. Obviously, the best character on the show is Alec Baldwin's character. He's so clueless yet confident. The man really understands comedy and he has terrific chemistry with Fey. Even the writers and the NBC page had some great moments in the show. Plus, the crazy stuff that comes out of Tracy Morgan's mouth is confoundingly funny (i.e. "I'm from the government and I'm here to inspect the chicken nuggets.") Morgan is going to have some great lines, but they're going to be the kind that have to sink in for a second before you have to pause your TiVo and laugh your ass off.
I had the privilege of seeing the original pilot for 30 Rock and I think making the change from Rachel Dratch to Jane Krakowski was a very smart move. I know it sucks for Dratch, but Jane humanizes the 'Jenna' character while Rachel just makes it a character instead of a person. According to an interview with Tina Fey in TV Guide, Dratch will be on the show virtually every week as a different character so at least she remains employed.
This show had some great one-liners that weren't at all set up as one-liners. They were just woven in with the dialogue. Very smooth:
"Are there other black nerds or is it just you and Urkel?" - writer with 'Ninja' hat on
"Do you have apple juice?" - Tracy Jordan
"No" - waiter
"Then I'll take a vodka and tonic." - Tracy Jordan
"It's not HBO. It's TV." - Fey
"I cast that cat myself." - Baldwin
Maybe this will be the break-out hit of the fall that, so far, has been elusive. What did you think?

I came to the show with an open mind, and came away disappointed. For me, it's probably the worst new comedy of the fall (mind you, I didn't watch Happy Hour, Till Death, or 20 Good Years). The attempts at wit are depressing, and the whole shtick at the beginning with the hot-dogs just seemed way to pretentious. Handing the hemorrhoid cream to Jenna in front of Alec Baldwin - comedy gold!
That said, Jenna and Tracy Jordan are good, and easily the best thing about the show (actually better than the sum total of the show) is Alec Baldwin. Of the whole show, it was only his parts that put a smile on my face.
Basically, the show revolves around Tina Fey, and she is a terrible actress. For me it's her that ruins the show.

I was dissappointed as well. I wanted so much to like this, and it just seemed to try too hard. I'll give it another couple of episodes though, maybe as the characters develope, the show will find its footing, I hope.

I had no plans to watch this, but wound up clicking over during a commercial break. I tuned in just in time to see the setup and the payoff of the "I'm a Jedi" joke.
Now that was funny. In fact, almost all of the Tracy Morgan stuff was funny, his character was a riot.
Unfortunately, the rest of it? Not so much. I was really looking for more out of Baldwin, too, he's a wickedly funny guy. His role in "The Departed" was funnier than this. Literally.

I'll give it a few episodes, personally I can see the Alec Baldwin character becoming the star.

I have to agree with Anna - the pilot was very funny. I watched it on-line at work and had to stifle my laughter several times for fear drawing attention to my "activities."

People who voted for Bush will not find this show funny because there is no laugh track and therefore, they will not know when to laugh.

I liked it alot. It was pretty funny and had a number of Arrested Development -style jokes throughout the episode. I also like the character of Martin Lawrence, I mean Tracy Jordan.

I'm so sad. I wanted to like this show - I really did. I think Tina Fey is brilliant, but something is completely missing, and I really can't put my finger on it. I also love Tracy Morgan, but his performance left me wondering how he got involved in this show. I thought it might have been the worst premiere of the season - then 20 Good Years came on.

i really liked the show but disagree with who the best character is going to be. It is clearly Tracy Morgan. Granted i have been a huge tracy morgan fan in the past but his character is going to have some amazing lines and if stays crazy, its going to be great.
its an off and on show but morgan and baldwin will keep me watching for now.

I loved the first episode. This has to potential to be the best comedy since The Office.

This show just showed how 20 Good Years does not need that laugh track to get its laughs. Two supertalented performers lke Jeffrey Tambor and John Lithgow deserve so much better.

Did anyone else thing the drunk driving scenes of the episode were a little problematic?

Granted it was the premiere, but that was the most hit and miss comedy I've seen in a long time. You had very smart comedy mixed in with a bunch of broad comedy and it just didn't seem to gel together. I liked the Alec Baldwin character, but he's battling with Tracy Morgan to see who can be the looniest. Shows need only one crazy character, not two. And am I to understand that Rachel Dratch appears every week as a different (and third!) crazy character? Tina Fey doesn't have the acting chops to pull off her Seinfeld-ish calm-among-the-storm character. I know its her show, but she should have stuck to writing it and given the part to someone else (hey, Sandra Bullock is only busy making bad movies). Will I watch next week? Sure, the show's got potential.

I voted for Bush and I found it funny. Not as hysterical as Arrested Development or The Office, but enough to show narrow-minded Bush bashers that some of us do have a sense of humor. This show was more on par with Lovespring International which ended up growing on me. I hope we get more Rachel Dratch, though.

It didn't annoy me or make me pity the fool who put it on TV, but it didn't make me laugh all that much.
When it was funny, it was pretty funny - but otherwise it was kind of a snooze.

See saw, you're completely correct!
I mean me being a fan of The Office (both), Extras, Scrubs, Arrested Development, and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, yet hating 30 Rock makes me, by some weird logic, someone who votes for Bush, and doesn't get the point of comedies without laugh tracks.
Do I laugh now?

Sure there were a few good one-liners, but they were buried with a lot more misses. I just don't think Tina Fey is as talented and brilliant as people say she is. It's not like her time at SNL was a highpoint in that show's history.

First eps, are always slow, (intros and all). Certainly deserves a couple weeks.
I'm looking forward to the comedy from having Trace's character on the "Girlie Show."
Best line IMHO:
Tina: I'm not dressed for [name of fancy restaurant whose name I forget].
Alec: Your dressed for Burger King, Do you want to have lunch there?
Still makes me snicker.
