The first new show fall show to take a tumble into canceldom has been announced: Kidnapped is officially done and will complete with a total airing of 13 episodes. So, in looking at all the entries, the person who chose Kidnapped as the first show to be canceled with the closest guess to the number of episodes (13) is ...
erroneous_nick, with Kidnapped in 7 episodes!
And was only the third entry in the contest -- nice call.
Congrats to you, Nick! Or is it erroneous? Well whatever it is, congratulations -- we'll get in touch with you shortly regarding where to send your new HD PVR system from SnapStream!
(UPDATE: Several folks have pointed out that they believe Smith to be the true canceled show here. After some discussion within the 'Squad and an analysis of the rules stated in the contest, our decision stands.)

You guys should definitely have more contests. Not just because I'd like to win one (eventually), but they've been fun to enter.

Okay, I'm pretty stunned. Both at winning (because, before the scrubs thing I'd never won *anything* before) and that I was the only one to pick Kidnapped.
Keith, you can call me Nick, it's just that I'm often mistaken, at least that's what my wife's been drilling into my head for years (and years and years...).

Are you sure the Kidnapped cancellation got announced before Smith? Just wanted to make sure. Seems like press take-out-the-trash day has hit.

Hmmmm, if you ask me, if a network announced next week that one of its shows was cancelled effective IMMEDIATELY (and not after 13 week short run, like Kidnapped) someone who picked said show could make a pretty good case that they should be your contest winner.

I agree..."Kidnapped" was not picked up to continue beyond 13, but the network is planning to continue airing it, and it's still in production. "Smith" was completely aborted. Sounds to me like "Smith" is the first cancellation of the season, and it's being reported that way in other places (such as TVtattle.com). And I didn't even enter the contest, so I have no ulterior motives here.

Yeah I would have to say that that if someone picked smith in 3 they should win (or tie)

The article your cancellation stories linked to have the exact same timestamp (2:37pm)!
Kidnapped:

Smith:

Some kind of clarification would be nice.

Okay, since I have the most to lose by what appears to be dissent on the decision of which show was actually cancelled first, I'm (no surprise) going to outline why I think I actually won and why Keith's decision is correct. Let me point out that the dissent is from commenters and not the TVSquad crew themselves, otherwise I think they would have held off making the decision on the winner until a consensus had been reached.
First: In the contest's basic rules it states: "Once a show is officially reported by a network as being canceled, the potential winners will be narrowed down to those who chose that show. " That's officially reported as cancelled, not actually ceasing to air.
Second: The article listing Kidnapped as "dead" appeared on October 5, a day before the Smith article.
Third: The linked article about CBS pulling Smith says: "...CBS has pulled...drama Smith from the schedule, but a network spokesman declined to label it as a cancellation." I submit the "declined to label it as a cancellation" bit as pivotal, even though we all know that's just a spineless way of saying cancelled.
Fourth: Whether either show is "shelved" or "cancelled", the fact remains that the announcement of Kidnapped came a day before the one about Smith and that's "officially reported" (re: my first point)
Call me a greedy whiner if you wish, but I'm fighting for what I think's right. I would think TVSquad wouldn't have made the announcement without this kind of consideration anyhow. If they did, it's not my fault, obviously, and they'll have to be more thorough in their next contest.
Of course all of this is coming from my extremely subjective and prejudiced mind since I was announced the winner through no intervention of my own. Your opinions may, and certainly will, differ.

My bad since both TVSquad posts were dated today, I figure the linked stories were both from today too.

I could really care less if erroneousnick won or not, but since Kidnapped will (apparently) stay on the air for 13 episodes, while Smith will be taken off the air right away, I'd say Smith was cancelled first. You might call it semantics, but Kidnapped was not picked up after its initial 13 episode run. Maybe there should be two winners, if its possible.

USA Today, Variety, etc., have all reported "Smith" as the first cancellation of the season, listing "Kidnapped" as "on life support" or "completing production."
I guess "TV Squad" doesn't believe in the reality-based community.
I wasn't even in the contest--I just hate to see one of my favorite sites make a wrong decision and then furiously stick by it, despite the truth. Sounds too much like the President.
