CBS has committed to an entire second season of The Unit, a military drama starring Dennis Haysbert and Scott Foley. Last spring, CBS renewed The Unit for only 13 episodes but has decided to go for an entire 22-episode season. Despite that we here at TV Squad really didn't like the show, 13.2 million viewers do like it and that was enough for CBS to keep it around. Is anybody watching The Unit? Has it improved over last season?

I'm watching.
I think it is 1/2 of a good show. The special forces stories are usually top-notch, but the show is drug down by the stories from home. I don't mind that they show the effect that this particular job has on the families left behind, but I do mind that it is shoehorned in every week in a jarring fashion.

Agree with both above, although it is certainly much less of the home portion than it was last year.
Great show. I keep begging TV Squad to review it.
Heck, I'd review it for you.

I actually find both parts to be pretty boring. There's a pretty big lack of action, even in the ops portions.
I guess delta force ain't delta force without Chuck Norris... haha.

I watch, and definately agree with the other comments. The story line from the home life is just not interesting. They should get rid of it, and only insert it when the unit is actually back home. I dvr this show, just so I can skip through the -boring- half of the show.

but the premise of the show is not CSI: Battlefield. It aint Law and Order. The show is called the Unit. And the Unit includes the family and the fact that the armed forces are treated better by Private Companies than by the United States Army.
How's that not a good story? How's that not a TRUE story? What happens to the soldier's family when soldier's die? What government services are available to the frontline men? Not even the minor underlings but the very elite. And what financial situations come up because of the fact that these ppl are strapped for cash? You blame ppl for treason when you dont pay them enough to educate their kids? Who's wrong here? (extreme example.)
its a good show. A little rough around the edges, needs a bit more editing but its a great show, nonetheless. The family stuff is important.

I like the Unit.
More than smith, thief, heroes (combined)...
Not more than Eureka, Lost or Prison Break though.
The Unit just seems a little forced...

I watch it. It is a very well produced show. It isn't non stop mindless action with tech that we know isn't real. It is about carefully planned and executed missions as well as the home life and problems suffered on both sides.

What if the A-Team had wives? Really boring ones?

I don't know what you guys are talking about. I think this show is quite good, and quite frankly, it's the stuff that happens on the home front that makes it interesting. The military stuff is all exciting, but I like the dynamic of what the wife's have to go through. Personaly I think it's better than Eureka (although I like Eureka) and it's definitely in my top 5:
24, Battlestar Galactica, The Unit, House, Family Guy
(runners up: Smallville, Studio 60, 30 Rock, Heros, Gilmore Girls, L&O series, Jericho, Psych, & Scrubs)

It might very well be 'a true story', but the thing of it is that it's mind-numbingly, rip-my-own-hair-out boring. Just like every other woman on television these women are 'in real estate', have affairs and what have you, but who really cares?
I mean this is David Mamet and Shawn Ryan. 'Spartan', 'Heist', 'Ronin' on the one hand and 'The Shield' on the other. Mamet simply doesn't write housewives and who _really_ cared about Mackey's domestic arc on 'The Shield'? The homefront-thing feels forced for the simple reason that it just doesn't fit.
The army-stuff, albeit over the top and sometimes embarrassingly macho, is first class. The wives at home should be neither seen nor heard, in my opinion.

I like this show a lot but I don't think it has entirely hit its stride yet because I think the writers are still trying to find the right balance of what works and what doesn't.
However, having been in the military I can say that this is the most realistic TV depiction I've ever seen of what the experience is like. Part of that realism is the home portion and how what goes on there effects the people that do the missions. The home portion can probably be a little over-dramatic at times but, hey, this is a tv show.
Those who complain about there not being enough action in the mission portion don't appreciate the intracacies of what defines mission success. The whole point is to get in, complete the mission objectives and get out with as little action as possible. Some people might find that more boring - and I can understand that - but some people also find the strategictactical planning and adjustments just as entertaining as blowing stuff up.

I think the Unit tries too hard. I know many soldiers, some of them involved in things they refuse to discuss, and none of them act like this. These guys act as if ther world revolves around them and we should all just get out of the way. I just don't know many soldiers like that. I've only watched two episodes and I won't be returning for a third, but I was really annoyed by the wives. They've become even more Stepford than they were last season, especially Kim who was the one bright spot of last season as the wife who felt no need to conform to what a military wife "should" be. Now she's just the like the others. Annoying and boring.

EXACTLY.
I also agree with those who stated that it is The Unit, and that includes the families. This show tries to portray the lives these kinds of men lead accurately while still being dramatic and exciting enough for television. I wish more shows tried to walk that line.
I love this show.

My girlfriend HATES the wives, I think it keeps the show from being too formulaic, but I see the point.
I like the affair because military bases are a hotbed of wife-swapping and cheating, its a nice touch of realism.
My major gripe is that they need to spend some money on the 'foreign' location sets, they arent fooling anyone, compared to, say, Alias, which was much more believeable.
All of the 'foreign landscape' is the same California desert and the 'foreign towns' are CLEARLY just tiny sets - they dont even use camera angles to minimize the effect.

I love the Unit. I feel the home portion is very important to the show. I shows what the family has to deal with when the unit is away and also what the family home life is like when the unit is home. Either way they are doing a great job of bringing us what is happening at home or wherever the unit maybe.

The Unit, for me at least, was one of those shows that I could never remember exactly when it was on, but if I came across it while channel surfing I'd watch it - and most of the time it was worth the hour of time. This season I'll be watching every episode, but I agree with the comments above about the wives.
Admittedly, as decent as the show is, I probably wouldn't watch it at all if President Palmer wasn't on it...

Hey, I love the Unit and I'm kind of po'd that there is no weekly review for it on tvsquad. Enough people like it for it to be renewed so why not review it too? (I have the same problem, with some other shows here too, like CSI, no episode reveiew)
I think the Unit is a good mix between action and the storyline about what goes on back home. It's a great show for us to watch since hubbie can soak up all the guns, shooting and explosions he can handle and I can see what Mollie and the girls are up to.
I absolutely adore Max Martini (Mack Gerhardt) and love to watch him on the show. I like this newer, lighter side of him, but I still want to see the old Mack, kickin' a** and getting the job done.
The Unit is a good show and I think it deserves a weekly synopsis - why doesn't tvsquad do it???
