(S03E01) It was interesting watching this episode for the second time with a fresh pair of eyes. I still need to hold off on saying too much until after next week's episode, as it's there where I felt we get a feel for the flow of the season.
Now, thankfully, I can discuss this episode with the rest of you and see what you're thoughts were on a few things.
Since the beginning of season two, I'm always on the lookout for guilty people and clues as to what could be coming up for the "big mystery" of the season. This season will be a bit different, as we all already heard, so it's a little weird trying to piece things together. Yeah I know it's only the first episode, but remember this is one mini-mystery of three this season, so a lot will show up in every episode. A good thing? That remains to be seen.
First of all, that T.A. in Veronica's criminology class just seems very guilty looking. And what's with the awful wig? It's almost as bad as Piz's hair. I wouldn't put it past the season to see that T.A. involved in some wrongdoing later on.
Had to love the quote from Veronica, as though a negative shout-out to members of Spoilers Anonymous everywhere: "I ignored all of the spoiler alerts, which I know is kinda douche-baggy."
Stepping back a bit, the theme music lacks that comfort level I've always looked forward to in the past. You know, that music that gets you pumped up for a great episode of 'Mars. Now, what's this? I'm not really sure I like it. I guess I'll just have to get used to it. Also, it's interesting that Parker is a regular, as is Lamb. Lamb I can understand, but I guess Parker makes some more prominent appearances in later episodes to warrant the credits addition.
Oh, and sorry ladies and Ausiello, I still think Piz is Teddy Dunn lame. in fact, he's such a good replacement for him that Veronica gives Piz some of Duncan's clothes. And did I mention the hair? Interesting tidbit: Piz is from Beaverton, Oregon, the same town our own Anna Johns is from. Sorry, Anna.
I'm a huge Battlestar Galactica fan and my wife ... is not. So it tells you something when both of us laughed at the numerous mentions of "frak" in this episode (we actually hear it again in the next episode, I believe). However, I'm pretty sure we laughed at it for different reasons.
Now, here's the thing about Veronica and Logan. When Piz asks Veronica if she has a boyfriend, it's her look back to him that -- for me -- said that she wasn't really sure she wanted to admit to Piz that she had a boyfriend. But maybe she hesitated to answer because she was just shocked that Piz asked her the question at all?
Obviously Dick will not be found out as the Hearst rapist, especially with him "screwing up bad" in the first episode, whatever that meant. It could have meant one event or many, knowing Dick.
Lastly we have Kendall being killed off, which I think wasn't a big surprise to a lot of people. I think it was a little shocking of how it all went down, though. That part of the story isn't over yet, as we've still got the mysterious briefcase from last season to deal with, as well as someone Vinnie Van Lowe put into the mix.
Anyway, I'm really hoping this season doesn't dumb things down and keeps us on our toes just as the first two seasons succeeded in doing. I do think I'll miss having that one-big-season-long mystery to talk about at the water cooler every week, so hopefully these mini ones will have the same magic. I'm just afraid they won't.
Miss the episode? I think you can still catch it online.
Quote of the episode:
Mac to Dick: "Parker's out somewhere with the unwashed. I'll tell her the 'needs hose down' dropped by."

The T.A. was the same actor that played Lucky, which is perhaps why he's a bit creepy.

Oh my God! They killed Cordelia. You Bastards!
I'll be honest, I'm a VM virgin, and I didn't know what to expect. But I liked what I saw. I may have to series this up on the DVR in place of Criminal Intent.

After all the hype regarding the new shows on TV (Studio 60, Heroes, Jericho, etc) and thinking, 'oh, I guess these are good', after watching the season premiere of VM, I remembered what good TV was. This has to be one of the top 5 shows right now. It's painful to think this is the last season....
Not sure if I like a bunch of teenage girls sitting around gosspiing about the show though... makes me feel like I'm not in the target audience range, which is ludicrous because anyone can enjoy the show.

this was the 4th time watching this episode, and it was different watching it on my laptop from the TV. Easier to see all the smaller details. This episode was a smash and i'm glad to hear there were so many new comers to the show. If any show deseveres to stay it would be veronica.
And i work @ AE where the arire tuesdays thing is coming from. And i gotta agree it's pretty lame. i was watching it and all of the sudden they appear talking about it. I don't care what they think inless they actually like the show. But they seem really fake!
The next episode seems really GOOD!! :)

As to Veronica's weirdness when Piz asked her if Logan was her boyfriend, I took it to be her realizing that he had a bit of a crush on her.
Good episode, though it speaks more to potential than actual awesomeness, which I'm hoping for next week. I don't know if this is intentional, but while the writers can be great and creative with names (Mrs. Hauser on the ep. that a kid was kept in a closet...Wikipedia "Kaspar Hauser," you'll see what I mean), they telegraphed the smaller mystery a bit with the name Fagan (what with his little troop of boy-theives and all). Took away the element of suprise.
Oh, and as for the CW promo monkeys, I was somewhat recently a teenage girl and I found those slumber party commercials exceedingly annoying, too. Perhaps they'll realize eventually that their demographic is not made entirely of shrill twelve-year-old girls.

I get the impression that the ambitious scope of Veronica Mars, along with the terse and often laugh-out-loud hilarious writing, that originally drew me to the show is gone. There were some mentions of "BFF" and MTV lingo, but that's not the "hip"ness that attracted me here: It was the smart relationships, the believable characters; it often poked fun at popular culture with a winking acknowledgement-y attitude. I don't know. It just doesn't feel organic anymore. It feels like the writers are just forcing it in order to become more accessible -- damn.

I agree with Heather, I think Veronica's look when Piz asks if that's her boyfriend is V realizing that he's in to her. I liked the "nice shirt" comment by Logan - I think he wore that argyle mess of Duncan's last year. I don't think the briefcase is a mystery any more - it held a few million dollars in cash. Keith says that he saw it but didn't count it.
Looking forward to finding out:
Vinnie's working for the Fitz's! Why Vinnie Why?
What's going to happen to Keith?
How did Dick mess up?
What's up with that TA's hair?

I thought the Saturn product placement was pretty hilarious, although I will miss V's convertible. Her old car just screamed "California" to me, the Saturn SUV is just kinda boring. Also, I would never have guessed that she would pick a big SUV, seeing as how it's never too useful for sleuthing and all...

I've missed this show a LOT. But I'm not sure last night gave me the fix I was looking for. Too much 'forced' interaction, as someone else pointed out above. I miss the flashback as a way of catching us up. Loved the argyle sweater--that was too funny. And I think VM's look at Piz was surprise at his interest, nothing else. I'm surprised at Keith being taken in by Vinnie Van Lowe, of all people. Also, good to see Mac again, and to see that the aftermath of Beaver has not been washed away.
HATE the aerie girls. They annoy the heck out of me and make me change the channel during commercials, which is something I never did before during GG or VM. If anyone has any influence to have them ejected before they hurt VM's ratings, please use it. We need this show to stick around.
Lastly, I hate the car. What is up with the product placement? Not cool. The LeBaron had a certain class that lent itself to her work and her social situation, and the convertible was handy for getaways. This Saturn SUV is completely wrong. Doesn't fit VM at all. And what a gas-guzzler.

Keith: Veronica had just KISSED Logan right in front of Piz, plain as day! She's dating Logan very openly and she seems pretty happy about it.
So to me, it seemed very obvious that the only reason she gave Piz that *look* was to say "Why do YOU care if he's my boyf--OH, I get it." I can't imagine any other interpretation because Veronica had been PDAing with Logan all over the place. She was just surprised that Piz was interested b/c she didn't realize that he LIKED her liked her.

Also: Wasn't Veronica's new car a hybrid? I know most people liked the LeBaron better, but I thought the hybrid thing was cool so she's not driving a total gas guzzler. But yeah, I agree that car looks way too "generic" and "shiny" for Veronica and doesn't really suit her as a detective. RIP, LeBaron. :(

I personally loved the episode. I knew from the start that it was going to be a Veronica 101 to get new people interested. It is supposed to get darker starting next week but we shall see. No matter what this is certainly more entertaining then anything else I have watched this year and I sure hope it gets new viewers.

Well, I was happier than a clam at high tide after last night's episode. I'd missed all those people so much, and I was just thrilled to see them all again. Also nice to see Logan/Veronica last longer than simply the hiatus.
The Fagin name worked as an "Oliver Twist" reference, absolutely, but when I heard the first name was Donald, all I could think of was Steely Dan.
Mac's reactions to Parker were priceless, especially her swift take-up of Veronica's offer to go the concert.
I found it all tightly written, tightly plotted, and wonderful to behold. Although I think they used a body-double for Dick's masked dance at the rally--there's no way that the body on that stage was the same one as when we saw Dick on the ground. Plus, I think Ryan Hansen would totally have made that dance funnier.

It was great, although I totally saw the end coming. That whole going into the room thing -- so very Urban Legends. The lead girl in the movie didn't mind her roommate having very rough. very vocal sex in the same room she was in because she's been whoring her way the past few days. She was used to it... when she woke up the next day, the roommate turned out to be dead -- she was being killed the time she came in.
I love Ryan Hansen.

The episode was ok. Not upto the standards of earlier VMars episodes. Something seems to be totally missing? Guess I was expecting more. Loved the frak's though ;)
Hope the next episode is much better.
Plus point for me is Piz. Love the character.

I'll have to watch it again but I have to ask, do we actually know Kendall is dead? All we saw was a gun being fired into another room - in a rather pointed fashion as it happens.

Veronica was surprised by the question since the dude stood 3 inches from V and Logan when they were kissing.
Obviously Logan is V's boyfriend.

I hate to admit it, but I spent this last weekend watching all 44 episodes that encompass the first two seasons of VM. Now that I'm an "expert", I'm ready for season 3. I'm still not sure if I like the theme song remix, but I liked that song before it was the theme song...And as much as I like Logan, I don't think he and V are going to make it, I mean he runs so hot and cold, not that I think anyone could take his place, everyone else is too "nice guy" for V anyway. Is this really the last season??

ok, so ive watched it 2.5 times now- last time my tired eyes rested, but my alert ears followed, i promise. my takes on several things mentioned here are as below:
1) The look from V as she is asked abt Logan, does initially suggest that she didnt know how to answer the question, if u take it alone and out of context. The true context is it came after (gross) PDA, so, yes, EVERYONE knows theyre together.
2) From the "Can i carry your books?" line I remembered why i liked Logan for V. I completely agree, no one else could keep up, and her character meshes best w. the fuzzy morality, and not the overtly nice-boy Duncan-ess. Hence, the constant "smartening up of the criminal element" relationship she's got.
3) Where was weevil? Bring back Eli! But i'm sure the good writers will get around to that soon.
4) If they hadnt added the roomates to the main cast I wouldnt know what was going on. Having kept Mac (yeah!) and given the amount of time that she will spend in their company (she has to be at Hearst alot), it would be kind of ludicrous not to. Besides, they add a certain amusement factor (so far) that i find interestin.
5) Which brings me to the next bit...when does she do school work? I mean, it was passable (sorta) in the last couple seasons that she balanced that - so much so that she was vying for the top scholarship Neptune High offered - and her (father's) cases. Then, all i wondered was, wth did she pull shifts at The Hut? But they cant seriously continue that nonsense this season. Her frosh year is to consist of the 1 criminology class? At least mention others.
6) I like to think i love good tv, so, i too watch BSG, and man am i lovin the fraks! I love when good writers follow othe rgood writers. Its like a circle of good taste
7) I can get used to theme song but, yah, i missed the punch of the guitars and drums at "come on now, sugar"... jus not the same hype
8) Her TA might be creepy and weird, but thats not automatic criminal. Otherwise, for similar adjectives of disdain, we'd have crucified Lam already. I think he is there to be foiled. He obviously thinks he's all that, and V _is_ all that. Sorry, dude, the blonde ends at the roots.
9) In the vein of assume nothing, until "habius corpus", i will not deem Kendall dead. (Cordy has been traditionally hard to kill.) The only thing that would sell it for me is the "and what gun did he use?!" factor. Keith...keith... must ur progidy progeny continually save ur ass?
10) Why is Vinny workin for any1 throwin money at him a surprising thing?
6) Imho, i like the 3 mini-mystery format. a) it may cut down on the amount of original ideas you'd need to have in a 20+ season; b) it ties the episodes together in continuous arcs, and such cohesiveness says "you must watch to follow" rather than "ok, so i missed an ep" - i.e. hold your audience; c) it is the halfway point between the storytelling of season 1 and of season 2 - u could do one off eps (s1), or you could tell one main story which is touched on in almost every ep, and work one-offs as the b story (2), OR you could work a main story, and have interestin one off b-storys, and alternate the focus. this allows V to find somethin interestin that brings the main story into the limelight, or not find much - and i love the introduction of havin her b wrong, as opposed to s1's always right, all de time -attitude - so thatthe one-off case is the focus of the ep. Flexibility, people. Good storytelling.
12) Which idiot demographer came up with a GG/VM age group that would be appreciate of kiddy commentary?! Someone at CW needs a hard slap. But if you watch the preceedin GG eps (or Smallville, or...), you already knew that. (Maybe they jus pulled the dude who put VM in its timeslot back on UPN.)
13) Last amusing (?) detail... in that neighbourhood, its a LeBaron that would stick out. Isnt she supposed to be undercover/incognito half the time? Oh, leave the Saturn alone :P
In my week, I have precious tv time devoted, and of those to make the must-see list, VM is still lookin to be way up there. Frankly, I look forward to it with as much - or just shy - anticipation as I do an ep of BSG and that is the highlight of my week. That ass-kissing said, I expect more of coming eps. Youve got 1 or 2 eps to do catchup for new audiences, and then youve no excuse to slack. So, my overall opinion will be reserved til after ep 2. Goodonya, Mr. Thomas. Dont let us down now....
