ABC's Ugly Betty is the most-watched new series so far this season. Nielsen Media Research says about 16.1 million people watched the series premiere last Thursday, almost beating Survivor, which had 16.6 millon viewers. The viewership for Betty really is amazing considering it didn't even have a lead-in since it aired in the 8 pm hour. Nielsen says ABC hasn't seen ratings this big for a scripted show at 8 pm since Matlock in 1995. Evidently, America is in the mood to see a regular girl stick it to the beautiful people in the fashion industry. What's your favorite new show so far this fall?

Am I the only one who thought this show was terrible? I watched a screener of it so I wasn't among the millions who tuned in to see the premiere.
Ugly Betty looks like more an ABC Family movie of the week than a weekly show. A feel good movie for 15-year-old girls who are at the age where they feel like everyone in the world is prettier than them.
Now that some people have seen what it's all about I'll be curious to see if it continues to pull in good numbers or if everyone just checked it out to see what all the fuss was about.

What's more? Ugly Betty increased in its second half-hour (whipping Survivor). This is a good sign for ABC. Only two shows this season have managed increased viewership (NBC's Heroes and CBS' Jericho).

While I don't hate Ugly Betty as much as Adam seems to, I was disappointed by the show. I would have like it better if it weren't for all the soap opera elements. If they took away the cheesiness and played it as a straight dramedy I would enjoy it more. I do think the actress playing betty is great in the role.

I love Ugly Betty and is challenging Studio 60 as my most favorite new show of the season (with Heroes coming in a sorta distant third place). Then again The Nine hasn't premiered yet, and that could change everything...

Ugly Betty was "cute." I guess I could appreciate it more if I was a 14 year old girl, but other than that, I probably wouldn't make it a Must See.
Studio 60 is just okay. I thought I would like this show more than I did. I'll keep watching, but I'm not blown away.
All of the other shows I want to watch premiere in October....Knights of Prosperity, 30 Rock, Friday Nigh t Lights and of course...LOST!

Talking about new shows... Why is TVSquad ignoring Kidnapped? I know it seems like a very derivative concept, but the acting, writing, production values are superb, and it definitely deserves to get reviewed as some of the other shows you are reviewing (cough..Smallville..cough). The second episode was really great.

Joey Geraci asked, "Why is TVSquad ignoring Kidnapped?"
Because it is getting canceled this Monday.

I don't think that article is right. Heroes had 25 million for its first episode and Studio 60 had around 19 million.
And Joey, we're not ignoring Kidnapped. Joel reviewed the pilot and had a report from the set too.

I watch most shows for the eyecandy. As cute as the lead is, I won't be watching it again if I have control over the remote. If this was supposed to be a comedy, the humor went right over my head. I don't care if the show's concept worked all over the world, it still sucks in my opinion.
I'd rather watch a Mail Call marathon. Ugly people, interesting subjects.

uhh... I kinda dumbfounded on this, the show is rather disappointing. I saw most of the episode and before it finshed I had to shut it off. I found it far too predictable and the whole "feel bad for me because I'm a dork" appeal... sorry that was mean but . I just felt every element from the show was unorginal. I don't hate the show but I don't think it deserved such high ratings. btw before someone throws a tomato, The lead actress America Ferrera, whom I seen before on screen is a good actress and this show isn't showing her talent.

Not sure where you got that Heros stat, since the ratings for if was an 8.8/13, where UB had 10.7/17 rating. For more people. Still I'm wondering if the ratings will hold for the show. It seemed to run out of jokes by the end of the episode and was pushing it a little. And I agree with Jeff, they need to lose the cheesy stuff and get the dramadey more. I felt it clashed too much with the serious and didn't blend well.

Love Ugly Betty!!
Well, have'nt seen the US version but I have it on my Tive, but I have watched the original columbian version and it rocked. I can't see how this will work being a once a week show instead of a daily, but still, even before it started - the premise is - well - promising. Betty was a major success cause it was a smart show. I hope the American version will be simillar. Ugly or not, Betty has a lot of homur, and you realy can't beat anybody who can laugh. I'm all for it!

I didn't expect to like UGLY BETTY, therefore it was shocking that I LOVED IT! The best new show of the season because it did what no other series has been able to do -- make you care about the characters. My other favorites are JUSTICE and Studio 60.
BTW, Heroes debuted with less ratings than UGLY BETTY. But but no means low ratings.

I was disappointed in Ugly Betty and so was my almost 14-year-old daughter. (so much for that demographic!) We both found it boring. Now, maybe it's because we both liked "The Devil Wore Prada," that it's hard to compare the two. Our favorite new shows this year are Studio 60 and Smith.

I read that Salma Hayek (who is Exec Producer) brought it here from Brazil. This of course after it had been translated to other markets (India, Asia, etc)

I loved Ugly Betty, too. I'm also hooked on Jericho. Heroes was worthy of a second watch -- it's really hard to judge a show like this that has so many leads to introduce in the first episode.
I've been disappointed by Standoff and Justice. Studio 60 I could take or leave.
