(S02E05) Ew!
I have to give credit to the creators of Bones; they certainly know how to find unique ways to decompose a body week after week. And this episode was no exception as the body du jour was quickly dissolving in a bathtub of bleach and liquid Drano. As I said . . . Ew!
But, it isn't the tub full of bloody skin that brings me back each week, it's the fact that this show is good. And, of course, that I review it for this website. So, pushing the image of a pitchfork full of skin out of mind, let's move ahead with the review.
Let's forget about decomposed bodies for a second and speak about relationships. Not about the one between agent Seely Booth and his ex-girlfriend (and mother of his child), who occasionally sleep together. Nor about Booth and Doctor Cam Saroyan, who also occasionally sleep together. Or Booth and Bones, who are really, really, close to sleeping together (which would be the point that I stop reviewing the show because I just hate when they do that). No, I'm talking about Doctor Jack Hodgins and Angela Montenegro. Get these two together already! They're adorable and need to hook up. And not just for a little bit, then break-up due to some stupid thing, They should be together for the length of the show. If you disagree let me know.
Back to this week's storyline. The one husband-two wives concept has been used plenty of times in procedural crime dramas. But, as usual with Bones, they like to twist it up a little. It turns out the wives of the victim knew that he was two-timing each of them. What they didn't know, until later, was that he had impregnated a third person. All three went to confront him and that's when they gave him the bleach bath. But, they actually didn't kill him, because the victim was already dead from an apparent suicide when they reached him. But it wasn't a suicide, and it wasn't even a homicide. It was just a simple accident which, due to a brittle bone condition, turned out to be fatal. Of course, the accident occurred when the victim's boss confronted him about some missing money, and he and the victim got into a little row. So, the boss decided to make it look like a suicide to get away. Ya got all that?
The main thing I liked about this episode was the lack of Bones and Booth. Yes, you heard it right. We actually got to see more interaction between the other members of the Jeffersonian Institution investigative team without Seely or Temperance hanging around. That's nice, because these team members, including Cam, have a good chemistry when alone. It's also the time that Angela steps away from her computers and really shines. I'll go so far to say that I wouldn't mind an episode where Bones is away at some conference and either Angela or Cam (or even Zack) help out with an investigation.
There is one thing that bothered me this week, and it's really a minor quibble. It was the seeming supernatural powers that Bones exhibited this time around. Particularly at the point where she guesses that the third person to sleep with the victim is pregnant. When asked how she knows Bones talks about the woman's gait and the spreading of the something-or-other. I was waiting for her to say 'Oh, I saw it all with my microscopic vision'. I think some of that needs to be toned down a bit because it takes away from her growing humanity.
Before I leave for the week I'd like to make a prediction. I think that Bones will be one of the breakout hits of this season. It has a great cast, good chemistry, the right amount of drama and humor, and it seems to be hitting its stride. As long as they don't hook Booth and Seely up I think it will happen. See you next week.

Glad you are becoming a Bones Fan. Without seeing season 1, I can understand why you don't like Booth and Brennan too much. Too bad the show isn't doing so good in ratings because it really does deserve more.

I love this show and I'm glad to see there are new fans of it out there. Angela is one of my favorite characters and I agree that hooking her up with Hodgins. They would make a good couple and it would work on this show.

"I'm going to hell aren't I?" "I'll save you a seat" bast Angela/Hogins quote for this episode.
and btw the chopsticks you can clearly see the second character. First time they referenced she was half Chinese.
oh did Brennan really mean "social intercourse"? I found it odd... to use the word there.
"don't hook Booth and Seely up" I'm sure you mean Booth and Brennan. Booth hooking up with himself... interesting

Every week, I end up eating dinner at the exact moment that they do the gross out autopsy scene in this show. Every week.
I loved the fact that Brennan knew what an 'Oscar' was.

I agree that this program is a good one, waiting to become great in the hands of the right writer. But please, oh please, lose the sappy soap opera sub-plots, replete with sappy new-age music plinking in the background while the camera zooms over shoulder to fill the screen with Booth's (et al) mug as they emote over topics perfected in afternoon TV. The wheels come off the story here, right into a pothole. Stay with the anthropologic science use of solving crimes. Much more difficult to write about this than, say, whine about ex's and how Booth relieves his latest "tension." Puh-lease. Either go completely sappy with science as sub-plot, or stay with crime solving, but don't mix the chemicals. The show will end up in the tank, just like this week's victim.

I have to say, this was probably the first time I was really grossed out by the decomposed body. Could be it's the first time in a while I watched in HD. Usually I TiVo it, so it's not as well defined. Good episode, didn't really see the many back and forth twists.

Great episode. The show continues to get solid ratings, but with better advertising by FOX it would certainly move up. It started in the top twenty this season, but those reality shows have now kicked in to muck things up a bit. It was ranked 30 last week which still is good. Soon the baseball hiatus will start, maybe FOX can work on a better promotional strategy.

I am ALL for Angela and Hodgins, I've wanted them to get together since early last season, and i cant wait.
As creepy as it was, I loved the scene with them at the end where they're talking and Hodgins is in the tub.....gross.
Also, I think if you had watched the first season (which comes out on dvd towards the end of November) that you might understand Brennan's weirdness a bit more, as it was a larger part of season 1 than it is this season.
I wonder if Brennan is gonna find out about Booth and Cam....THAT should be interesting.

Oh, and one more thing,
I still don't fully understand WHY when the ladies got there and found him dead, they put him in the bathtub?
Did they explain that and I missed it?

I'd just like to point out that this show is based on the life of a real person. So if Kathy Reichs (said real person) has a "Booth" in her life and they hooked up, there's a good chance that will happen in the show.
Besides, why are people so anal retentive about that? It isn't the characters falling in love that's the problem...it's the writers writing the characters falling in love. Cross your fingers and pray these writers know what they're doing, and it will all be okay.

It'd be hard to hook Booth and Seely up- seeing as they're the same person. *g*

I'm not 100% sure but I think the women wanted it to appear like a homicide so they could collect the life insurance money. If one commits suicide, the life insurance is uncollectible and the women all thought he had killed himself and they were gonna be left without any money.

I love "Bones", the first season was great but this season has left me a little cold. The relationship between Seely and Temperance is gone. And the ex-girlfriend sex jumping from Seely just made him look like a womanizing jerk. Sorry but what happened to the chemistry??

Ditto for your prediction on breakout his of the season - would have happened earlier - if only Fox...
nevermind.
I almost forgot what the case was because, duh...Booth in bed - TWICE! What a treat!
B&B - great in any shape or form - together, at odds - just on screen
Absolutely NO on the "adorable" Hodgela - they were each interesting in the season you missed (the race for Toni, the delivery girl anyone? Jack imagining Toni and Angela together - preferring this to an actual chance with Toni?)
Roses from cadavers, talks in tub-o-lards - not my idea of "cute" exactly - and that added to the inane dialogue and lack of chemistry.
Have you missed that all their "hey look at us , we're a couple" public displays are post coital for some time now? They got them together already, and that tub still smells...

Edgeoforever - I COMPLETELY disagree about Angela and Hodgins.
It's like Beauty and the Geek. and I think they DO have great chemistry.
It's obvious there's already something going on there...I just wonder how long it will be before someone actually says something about it.

I totally agree with you about Hodgins and Montenegro; the actors have such great chemistry together and they really play off each other. More so even than Boreanaz (never an acting dynamo) and Deschanel. I also agree it's great to see the supporting cast stepping into the limelight more often. It's udnerstandable that the show concentrated on Bones and Booth in the first season, they are the stars of the show. Thankfully, the supporting players are getting their chance to shine, and I love Tamara Taylor as Saroyan -- she's great. However, I did not really like this episode's mystery -- kind of predictable. The most shocking thing about this episode was the fact that Booth wears tighty-whiteys!

Episode: blah. CSI had an episode just like this a few seasons ago. Too much was going on. A/H, Booth/ex, Bones/Booth's ex, etc. Someone mentioned a soap opera and they were totally right.
I like the chemistry between different characters, but lets not overdo it. Phew - I can't keep track.
Likes in the epi:
- Tightie whities (whoa)
- Chat between B/B at the end of the ep
- total chemistry
- Sending Zac out to collect evidence
Dislikes:
- soap opera-esque
- CSI-esque
- X files-esque
Come on writers. This so my fav show now.
