A movie created through a partnership between HBO and RAI, the Italian state broadcaster about Albert Einstein may feature Sean Penn playing the role of the acclaimed physicist. Penn has apparently expressed interest in both the script and in working with Italian director Liliana Cavani. The TV movie is obviously still in the early stages, so who knows what to expect, but I can easily picture Penn playing this role. The kid's got range, I'm telling you. Hopefully he can affect a decent German accent, too, or at the very least grasp the concept of an accelerating universe. What do you folks think? Could Penn handle this role? Who else would make a good Einstein?Sean Penn may play Einstein

I do not know if you are being sarcastic or not. Sean Penn is not made for this role at all. He constantly looks like he is lost and has no idea where he is, which is why is was perfect in 'I am Sam'. Other than that... personally I would want to see Tom Cruise perform Shakespeare with that stupid grin he does, which seems to be the only emotion he can express of lately.

Penn would be perfect if the part was that of Albert Einstein's bewildered neighbor, otherwise I couldn't think of someone more ill-fitted for the part. Well, maybe Joan Rivers would be a worse pick, but only by *this* much.

O love how Sean Penn is considered the "best actor of his generation". While he's great. I prefer Johnny Depp. Bring it on, naysayers, but Depp is ALWAYS interesting. ALWAYS takes a lft turn. I can't wait for him in Sweeney Todd and I think he would be a great Einstein.
Or Paul Giamatti.

Walter Matthau. Only Einstein ever. Period. It was a crappy movie, but nevermind - he was Einstein.

Targ8ter: while i agree walter mathau did a great job as an elderly einstein, i think this new project is focused on einstein in his 30's / 40's. Einstein was quite the playboy, being a married man who had a few affairs!
So, there is a whole other side to this genius, a more human side with flaws and torments.
I think sean penn would do an AMAZING job, he can play anything.
Btw, Oscar count: Sean Penn - 1, Johnny Depp ZERO.

I'm with JT -- every time Sean Penn flaps his gums about politics, or drops himself into New Orleans or Iraq to save the world, I have a harder and harder time seeing Sean Penn as anything but a retard.

Sean Penn is an idiot who thinks he is intellligent & having him portray Einstein is like is like Marilyn Manson playing the role of Jesus Christ! Penn is an idiot leftist with only a High School education, who thinks that his being an actor makes him a genius! No, Johnny Depp would definately play a better Einstein. Depp is a much better actor & doesn't believe himself to be the world savior like Penn! What has Penn done by him going to Iraq or New Orleans? NOTHING! Penn's a living, breathing Neanderthal!
