After I posted about the season premiere of Grey's Anatomy, a few of our commenters from the Great White North mentioned that CTV showed episode two by mistake, leaving them in the cold regarding episode one. Indeed, in some parts of Canada, the network did air the wrong episode in its usual Thursday at 8 PM timeslot, due to what they called a "satellite feed error" at the source (what's the source? ABC? CTV headquarters?). Anyway, they apologized and said they'll air the season premiere at a later date. Of course, many Canadians get American networks on their cable systems, so they likely caught episode one at 9 on ABC. But that means they're a week ahead of us now. First they get universal health care, now this. Lucky buggers. There are rumors going around that episode two was supposed to be the season premiere, with what Americans saw yesterday being episode two. But Shonda Rhimes switched the order after ABC told her viewers would get too confused. Hm. Dunno. Seems pretty clear this was a continuation of last season's finale. Maybe there was some heavy rewriting and re-editing. Not sure.

That is most likely not the case. Canadian law says that cable companies have to broadcast the canadian feed over top of the US feed when there are both a US channel and a canadian channel showing the same program at the same time. That means that by law, if your cable company has Grey's Anatomy on both CTV and ABC at the same time, they would have to replace the ABC feed with the CTV feed for that half hour. I'm not sure the reason that this is done, but it's the reason we don't see the great commercials during the super bowl, because it's been replaced with the canadian feed, and therefore the canadian commercials.

Trevor, normally you would be correct on this. Except this time CTV showed episode #2 at 8 and ABC showed #1 at 9. They were both on.
(It's been a confusing week for Canadian stations showing US shows. Everything seems to be frakked up.)

I was wondering why episode 2 didn't really start off from episode 1, as well as several "holes" in the storyline... I would have never thought CTV aired the wrong episode! Now I'll have to download the premiere... lol!

It's done so that Canadian networks don't lose advertising revenue. The network (CTV, Global, etc.) have bought the Canadian rights to that show so they feel that when it airs at the same time as the originating network Canadians should see the Canadian feed with the Canadian commercials.
Apparently this only holds true if it's the same episode. Last night my cable company (Shaw) pulled the Canadian feed over ABC a few minutes into the episode when they realised what ABC was showing wasn't the same as what CTV had on. A bit confusing to say the least - we got to see Meredith reacting to her panties being on the bulletin board (not to mention Christina jumping Burke) before we got to see Addison sticking them up there.

I have digital cable (but no PVR), so I saw Ep 1 on the Detroit ABC, then Ep 2 on CTV (in Vancouver). In both cases, in the cold open "Previously..." there were scenes that didn't make sense. So I'm guessing the mix 'n match editing rumo(u)rs are true. There are still scenes in the "Previously..." from Ep 2 that weren't in either 1 or 2.
