Justice: Addicts

justice; kerr smith
(S01E04) I really enjoyed Tom Nicholson's (Kerr Smith) storyline in this episode. We get to see his weaknesses as he loses sight of his job when his relationship with a client clouds his judgment. Plus, someone else gets to try a case for once.

The episode opens with a man falling from a skyscraper and then the shaky camera work begins. This week's victim is Daniel Benson, son of legendary studio head Scott Benson. The victim's girlfriend, Molly Larusa, is missing. The two were dating in rehab, which is where Benson plummeted to his death. TNT&G fits into the equation because the missing girl's father is their client, Frank Larusa.

This week we meet a new character, private investigator Betsy Harrison. She's a former narcotics officer for the LAPD and she doesn't exactly have people skills. She tracks down Molly, who seems to have a girlish crush on Tom (who doesn't?). The team cleans her up by giving her a pill to wipe the heroin out of her system and drops her off at a church, where Betsy calls in a real friendly tip to police.

After that, the team goes to their usual tactics. Ron Trott (Victor Garber) gives an interview to TMZ.com (Hello, product placement!), Alden Tuller (Rebecca Mader) recreates the crime scene, and Luther Graves (Eamonn Walker) digs through DA evidence. During this, we learn that Graves is a self-loathing defense lawyer after serving in the district attorney's office for years.

The show takes a turn when Tom punches a bouncer he thinks is supplying Molly with heroin. Ron pulls Tom from first chair because he obviously can't separate his personal affection for the Larusa family with his job to defend Molly. Cold and emotionless, Luther takes over the case while Tom sulks. Of course, this was the right thing for Ron to do.

Molly keeps lying, looking increasingly guilty as the show drags on. She lies about where she was the day that her boyfriend died. She lies about not knowing one of the counselors, Amber Wilson, who is also her lover and drug dealer. Amber cuts a deal with the prosecutors to testify that she and Molly killed Benson together. She has love letters to prove it. At this point, I'm believing that Molly is guilty. The only person who doesn't doubt her is Tom, who, as Alden aptly points out, is just another enabler.

Molly gets drunk and can't testify but Luther plans to break the case with the cross examination of Amber. He tries to prove that Amber is a liar and pokes holes in her re-enactment of how she and Molly pushed Daniel off the balcony. While waiting for the verdict, we learn that Luther is stoic, compared to Tom, who is always a mess when he's waiting for a verdict. Once again, the attorneys at TNT&G get a 'Not Guilty' verdict for their client. But it's bitter sweet and Tom drops her as a client.

The murder of Daniel Benson: It didn't happen as anybody said it did. Those addicts do lie, don't they? It turns out that Molly was fighting with Daniel while Amber was in the room. He hit her and walked out to the balcony, where Amber followed him and pushed him off. Molly freaked and ran away.
