(S01E01) I think I can say without much hesitation that CBS is going for the Lost crowd here. An ongoing mystery involving a nuclear (?) explosion that happens outside of a small town, cutting off all communication between the small town and the outside world. What happened? Was it an accident, another country attacking the country, aliens? Something else completely? But a show like Lost, one that grabs the imagination and fan fervor at an incredible level, is a rare thing. Can Jericho do it too?Skeet Ulrich plays Jake Green, who comes back to his hometown of Jericho, Kansas. He's a bit of a black sheep of his family and has had a falling out with his father (Gerald McRaney), the town's mayor. Plus he has business to conduct and old girlfriends to see and old friends to run into, but all of that is interrupted by the explosion. Not to mention a school bus that has crashed, carrying a teacher and her kids, one of whom needs emergency medical help that only Ulrich is around to perform.
What I like about this pilot is that it seems to be going for that small-town paranoia thing, the way that 50s sci-fi movies used to do and Rod Serling was so good at on The Twilight Zone. If it sticks with that, and we really don't know what the hell is going on for several episodes and the mystery and tension in the small town starts to get bigger and bigger, then that could be something interesting. At the same time, I don't think this show is going to get the same amount of time to build the mystery and give the reveals the way that Lost was, so hopefully there's going to be at least a little clarity in upcoming eps.
Ulrich is OK in the lead role I guess, but it's the supporting characters that are even more intriguing, including McRaney and Pamela Reed as his wife and Ulrich's mom. And the other Jericho townspeople we'll get to know: Ulrich's ex-girlfriend, the tough teen with the heart of gold whose parents might be dead from another blast in Atlanta, the storeowners, the deaf girl, the guys who carry guns and riot, and everyone else.
And what's with all these shows using pop songs as emotional short cuts and mood setters? Hey, nothing really against doing that, but in the first 6 minutes Jericho uses three different pop songs to grab the younger audience.
The last scene in the episode shows one of the characters driving near the outskirts of town and coming across a bunch of dead animals on the ground, as the camera pulls back. I think the show is going for some sort of dramatic "reveal" here, but it wasn't that dramatic, because I think viewers have already assumed that things like that have happened anyway. So the ending is sort of blah, but the premise is certainly intriguing.

I like the show, good premis, average acting so far, but heck it's TV. I'm just interested in the post nuclear aspect....but that already has some holes.
The Mushroom cloud was very visable and tall for it to have been in Denver, they'd have to be able to see it clearly for 2-300 miles, which would probably require a 10Mt or larger yield. No terrorist could pull that off. the maximum yield India has been able to pull off is probably somewhere between 25 and 40 Kt.....which would NOT be visable at that distance, and I can't imagine terrorist surpassing that yield. The only nations to have ever tested anything over 1MT are the U.S., Russia, France, and China. Only Russia and the U.S. have tested anything over 10Mt, and we do not have any such weapons in our arsenal currently, the largest of which are maybe .5 Mt, as our weapons are designed for multiple warheads now of lower yield.
Maybe I'm be to picky.....but there is no way they could have seen a cloud that far away in Denver of that height.....not if it was a terrorist, or even an enemy govt.
Also what are those mtns? Last I checked the only mtn range in that area is on the OTHER side of Denver......at most there might be a few small hills between Jericho and Denver.
I know, I know Artistic Liscence, i hope they at least get the "fallout" science right.

Why does everyone assume the black guy (lennie James a fantasic actor) is a convict or evil? Talk about racism at its finest. I liked the show because I don't nit pick. If you applied the same logic to all the hit shows, like 24 etc, you would have the same problems. When you take a story with the magnitude of a nuclear disaster, nay, multiple disasters, the studio does not have enough money to make it 100% realistic. CGI can only do so much. So sit back and just forget the implausibilities and assume they will be there. It's how people cope and interact that is interesting. Just assume it is a fantasy show. I think the creators took a big chance in marketing it as a 'realistic' interpretation and should have played up the fantasy aspect so that the pesky nit-pickers could be hushed up quickly.
I mean, they could introduce a freaky invisible monster in Mayor Green's basement and a secret hatch at Gracie's market and no one would bat an eye lash.

Denver is about 160 miles on I-70 from the Kansas/Colorado border. If you drew a straight line it would be a little closer. Based on the road signs you see at the beginning, it kind of puts Jericho where Garden City would be. Which is further from Denver.
Then again this is TV and it's a fictional story. Most folks couldn't locate Kansas on a map, let alone tell you how far any city in it is from Denver. You just have to go along with the premise that this is a small isolated town, and the only one, between Denver and Wichita. Forget what the geography/reality says. They picked Kansas as it is about as rural as you can get. They could not have picked any locale near any major city that would have been the ONLY little town left after a nuclear explosion.
If you think too much reality into it, if it was a major attack you'll wonder well why didn't they see a cloud in the direction of Wichita too? Since the girl was picking up her b/f from the Wichita airport they had to be close to it. If not, why didn't he fly into Denver? If they were close to it I am sure the fares would be lower than Wichita! :-) Why didn't they see one a little further south over Colorado Springs? It's 90 miles south of Denver.
It could have been just Denver and Atlanta. We'll just have to stay tuned to find out :-)

I am looking forward to upcoming episodes. I'm frustrated that people are nit-picking at the most absurd things. This is NOT a documentary on the 5 W's of a nuclear blast. It's how a town comes together when ALL are faced with an unimaginable crisis. Think back to how everyone--and I mean nationwide--was more tolerant, caring and concerned about others in the days after 9/11.
The 'lone black guy'? Yes, Robert Hawkins is a mystery--GOOD! THAT'S WHAT THIS SHOW IS ABOUT!!
And look around at the ethnic representation in the town.
It was the pilot epsiode. It had what? Forty minutes to draw you in enough to make you willing to come back for more. It's got to lay out a plot and introduce characters.
I guess I am annoyed by people who want to be entertained by a fictional production, then demand that it is 'real' in every detail. Give it a chance to do that--entertain you. Suspend your idea of reality and embrace your imagination.

I like the show so far, and think it has potential, mostly because I like the subject matter. Maybe I'm just morbid. That being said, please, for the love of god, does there have to be music in the background for the entire show? Hearing that sappy piano every five seconds is irritating.

I really liked the second episode, and thought the mine was ingenius.......some people said I nit picked too much about teh science of the nuclear explosion distances etc. But see that is what I have generally liked about LOST, they did a little reseach, and some of what seems crazy, actually is based on magnetic theory.
I really do want this to be a realistic depiction of Nucelar attack/war. As we really haven't had anything like that in some time, and it makes the show more "real"......if they blow the actual effects of fall out I'll probably switch it off. It greatly annoys me in movies like "The Sum of All Fears" when they completely ignore the realities of nuclear explosions, radiation sickness and etc.......and movies who get it right like K-19.....I really get into....what can i say, my Dad spent his life working in the nuclear industry...I want it to be realistic.
In any case....teh phone call from Atlanta would be fine....calls are almost instant now with only a few seconds of delay even from here to Europe....so no EMP would have wiped out the call immediately.....
The Yield was still incredibly large to reach the height it did that many hundreds of miles away. based on what the othe rposter said about Jericho's probable location, it could very well be visable from Denver.....people forget it's VERY VERY clear out there you really can see hundreds of miles.....perhaps people living on the coast don't realize how bad our visability is.
Still for it to have reached that height it would have to be a really LARGE weapon...no terrorist could have done it.

Another Thought.....they supposedly just got a rainstorm mixed with the nuclear fallout.....
This is the WORST possible case scenerio when it comes to fallout.......if this show is going to be realistic we're going to see a LOT of people die.....and a day or so in teh fallout shelter is NOT going to be enough......
They do not have proper equipment, and will need to pretty much bulldoze EVERYTHING......honestly given this situation this show might end up more like a "when the wind blows" British movie........
I'll be very interested to see how realistic they are on radiation sickness and clean up.....
They've hinted it was a hydrogen bomb, so probably lower radiation, but unlikely a terrorist could build that. Also those bombs are designed for ariel burst for maximum damage but minimum fallout, if they say it was a terorist, and brought in, say ground level, the fallout should be much worse, and unlikely ANY terrorist could produce a hydrogen bomb.
Still Kudos for showing the state of disrepair of fallout shelters, their incredible inadaquacy at sheltering modern populations even in small towns.....and using a mine as a make shift one, as it does have modern ventalation and scrubbers. That was just a really good idea.

Actually, if you read a book called Alas, Babylon by Pat Frank, you might get an idea of where Jericho is heading. It was a book about a small town and how it was affected by a nuclear attack upon America. Generally shelved or filed in the SF area, but occasionally you can find it in general fiction.
