(S02E04) Wow, can you believe we're already up to the fourth episode of the season? So far, every episode has been a good one. Now, let's not waste any time in getting to this week's review.
This was a very solid episode. At first, I wasn't fond of the whole 'serial killer murders while in jail' scenario, because its been played out in movies and television a few thousand times (and, why does the serial killer always think they're in the driver's seat when he (or she) is in jail on the way to an early dirt nap?). But, as Bones and Booth got down to tracking the killer I was really into the story. The best part was that I had no idea whatsoever on who the actual killer really was. This is refreshing, because in the previous episode of Bones I knew who the killer was in the first 20 minutes.
In fact, when they revealed the killer (who I will not reveal for those who have not seen the episode yet) it was totally out of left field. That is a sign of a good procedural crime drama. Because, if you already know who the killer is in the first few minutes of the show the fun of figuring it out with the characters is ruined. I really hope to see more of that on this show.
What I also want to see more of, and got this episode, is meatier roles for the rest of the Jeffersonian Institution team. I have to give kudos to Michaela Conlin as Angela Montenegro and Eric Millegan as Zach Addy. For the last three episodes they've been staying in the background. This time around, though, they really shined in their roles. Particularly Conlin as Angela. From a person who never saw any of the past season's episodes, I thought that she really took over in many scenes. In particular, the scene where she meets up with the serial killer's wife in order to try and pull some information from her that Booth and Bones couldn't in past rounds.
Other things I liked about this episode. Well, there was Jack Hodgins' brief synaptic meltdown when Booth was trying to pull some information out of him on where another victim was being hidden. This proved that even the most intelligent of us is fallible. Then, there was an easing of tensions between Bones and her new boss. And, as usual, there was the fine teamwork of David Boreanaz as Agent Seely Booth and Emily Deschanel as Bones.
Finally, there was a little turning point in the life of Doctor Temperance "Bones" Brennan. At the end of the show Bones and Booth discover where the killer is hiding (once again, I'm not telling!). Booth goes after him, but not without giving the good doctor a gun. Booth gets nabbed by the killer, and is about to become another victim, when a shot rings out and a bullet slams into the murderer. It's Bones; she has killed another human being. Later, Seely confronts Temperance about it to tell her it will eventually be all right (Booth once killed a person, as well). If you look at this a certain way it seems that the relationship between Booth and Brennan has reached a new level that we may see return in future episodes.

I didn't check yet to see if this was written by the same writer as Man on the Death Row (first Epps appearance), but it feels like it. That too was one of the best written episodes of the last season.
True about the case - previous episodes were not strong mystery wise, but this was the exception.

Little info from last season reference here:
Booth used to be in the Rangers as a sniper, killed ALOT of people. In The soldier in the grave he tells Brennan about a specific incident when he was a aniper, something that he has never told anyone else. Touching scene there.
Angela was a big part last season because of her closeness to Brennan (bestfriends) and coaching to Zach (to be normal) and countering Hoggins in a number of levels. This season she has taken a back seat a little. Last season there was an Angela episode, a great one. I know everyone is about Booth and Brennan (which I am too) but Brennan and Angela is just as great, its so comforting how close they are despite how different they are in personality. They understand each other in so many levels. And its nice they are bringging it back , like in this episode. Brennan/Angela talks are always very touching.
Bring Epps back was awesome. Playing them twice! It was pure genius here. Brennan's quote saying he touched her with his creppy hands, her face was classic!
And one more thing, Brennan can't have a gun for two reasons one she was charged with a felony (she shot unarmed man, who was going to set her on fire, hence why she wasn't convicted) and two Cullen (Booth's boss) won't allow her to carry a gun (he doesn't like her and think squints should't be on the field)We haven't seen Cullen since his daugther died so... and Brennan did help him, so many bad feelings between them went away? Still when need Booth always give her a gun (always one on his ankle)

This actually wasn't one of my favorite episodes. When did Brennan get a heart? Is it because of what happened with a certain person in her life? (Being vague, so as not to spoil it for people who haven't seen some eps.)
Brennan really reminded me of Angela here. Emotional, couldn't work on something, etc. And holy sexual tension. Isn't it a little early on for something to happen and a little too early for this much tension? I wholeheartedly agree that there is tension and sure opposites attract, but Brennan and Booth?
I've read some other articles that said that Booth may go downhill soon. Let's hope the writers keep everything original and not do something like we've seen on countless other tv shows: Law and Order SVU, Without a Trace, etc.

another comment... This was the first kill for Bones, she shot one before as Rita said, but she didn't killed him. This was her first time and to save Booth's live.

This was SUCH a great episode.
WHY has no one mentioned the interesting things going on between Angela and Hodgins?!?!
Like when she came in the room, and he commented on how beautiful she looked, and i don't remember her responce, but she called him Hodgy!
There's most certianly something going on there. I think the writers are giving us subtle hints, and eventually we're going to find out there IS something going on, but they're hiding it from the rest of the gang. BUt that's just my theory...I'd really like to see them together.
And, Clamchowder, I heard about the whole Booth going downhill thing, which really dissapoints me, he was so great in this episode.
(P.S. Does Booth still not know that Hodgins is pretty much their boss?)

The scene where they found the symbol of 2 crossed hammers on the bone was classic!
Hodgins: It's the Masonic symbol! That explains everything, the bodies buried face down, Epps is a member of the Illuminati...
Zack: It's the miners symbol.
Hodgins: Oh.

Lacey - with regard to your comments about Angela and Hogins. I'm not sure that the writers are being subtle. IMO, it seems they are throwing it in our faces.
Also, Booth does know who the boss is. He helped Hogins get out of a dinner that would have blown his cover.
The big questions for me are:
- Does Cam know who the boss really is? Hojins could stop all of that if he wanted to.
- Who is Booth hooking up with next week. My money is on the ex. No way is it going to be Brennan and probably not Cam.

ClamChowder - Well, I can't wait for them to come out and tell us about Angela and Hodgins.
Also, I don't think Cam knows about Hodgins. I've watched all 4 episodes from this season, and I don;t remember any mention of it.
And as for Booth, next week, It won't be brennan, but it MIGHT be Cam. I guess we'll have to wait and see

Not sure about Booth "going downhill" - it'll all depend on how well it's written and played! Personally I didn't think they did Booth any favours in this episode - David Boreanaz is great at comedy but I think the writers made Booth act like an idiot a little TOO often. Redeemed by the great last scene though!
