(S05E01) I love this show and I'm thoroughly excited that it's back. I still think it's the best in the CSI franchise and after last year's cliffhanger, this is the one premiere that I've honestly been looking forward to. We pick up right where we left off, with Horatio and Delko in pursuit of Antonio Riaz, the drug kingpin responsible for the death of Horatio's wife (and Delko's sister) Marisol. Riaz has fled the country thanks to the deal he cut with the Feds. Next stop? Brazil.
Once in Brazil, the local authorities essentially let Riaz go because the charges against him in the States no longer hold up in Brazil. The Feds wiped the charges in exchange for Riaz's info on the Male Noche gang. So he's a free man but Horatio and Delko were waiting for him.
At this point, the episode got a little cheesy and way too far-fetched. But that's what I've come to love about CSI: Miami. The corniness is what makes it so great. Now it never occurred to me that since this episode was taking place in Brazil, that Yelena and Ray might make an appearance. After all, we haven't seen them since they fled the country with their son Ray Jr. at the end of season three. Naturally, H has a hunch that Ray must be working for Riaz and Yelena confirms it. What great luck!
Wrong. Horatio and Delko find Ray hanging from his feet, bloody and cut up. He died minutes later. At first I was upset that Dean Winters didn't reprise the role, but I suppose I would have turned it down too for twenty seconds of screen time followed by a last breath. Now at this point, I'm asking myself, "Why is Ray involved with Riaz? What does this have to do with anything?" The answer was actually fairly well conceived... at least I thought so.
Back in Miami, this guy named Matos was Riaz and the Male Noche's biggest rival. There's no way Riaz was going to head back to Florida and hit the guy. So he sent Ray Jr. (with a stomach full of heroin pellets) to lure Matos and take him out on the pretense that Matos had Ray's father hidden away somewhere. Ray Jr. had no idea his father was already dead. Make sense? Horatio was able to stop Ray Jr. in time so all ended well. Yelena came and got her son and I hope they'll stick around for a while. I'm sure there were some Surface fans out there glad to see Carter Jenkins back on TV too.
Oh, I almost forgot. Horatio did kill Riaz. The scene was straight out of Street Fighter II for Super Nintendo. Right down to the helicopter pad and canned Spanish music. The whole sequence was laughable and I loved every second of it.
Meanwhile, back in Miami, we found out that Natalia has been upgraded to a CSI. She worked a case, on a provisional basis, with Wolfe and things didn't turn out so well. She was a bit loose with her language and an innocent man was shot because of what she said. It was a nice way to highlight her unpreparedness for this job but it also gave weight to Wolfe's belief that she doesn't deserve the promotion at all. She was, after all, the mole last season. I'm not too sure I like this upgrade either.
Overall, a very satisfying premiere. It stands alone and didn't really set up any future storylines, but I'm sure that next week we'll get some. CSI: Miami was great as a serialized show last season, focusing more on continuing storylines. I hope the same trend goes on this year.

Let me say that watching this episode on my new HDTV was absolutely amazing. Given the locale with the plot, the vibrant colors of the scenery (especially the opening scene, WOW!), this seriously re-confirms to me that all CSI's have breathtaking visuals and cinematography!
That said, I'm a little sad that they didn't drag the Brazilian plot out, maybe Riaz would get away for an episode or two and play cat and mouse. It just seemed like it was over a little too quickly. (Note: I may be biased now that I've seen HDTV, LOL!)

Oh, my God, this was such a bad episode! Normally, I like this show and I agree it is usually the best of the three CSIs, but this episode was badly written and acted with enough holes in the plot to sink a ship! Between David Caruso's freakishly unemotional acting and Jonathan Togo's laughably over-the-top reactions I don't know who was the worst actor. Even normally good actors like Khandi Alexander and Emily Procter seemed to barely call it in. Maybe I've just grown tired of the Horatio Cane mannerisms, but why must David Caruso always speak to someone turned slightly to the side; why must he put his hands in his hips like a pudgy superhero? If this show doesn't get any better I'll be taping it instead of Studio 60.

This show really disappointed me. The acting is horrible and I don't care if people like it for the cheesyness of it. That's not a reason to like it. Horatio and Delko (David Caruso and Adam Rodriguez) are just plain bad actors and Wolfe (Jonothon Togo) just needs to die in some freak accident(Can we bring Speedle back?) Sofia Milos was a blessing to bring back but I know she won't stay for long. Natalia Boa Vista (Eva LaRue) is just plain laughable(Go back to AMC). I can't believe they did not give a part to Sofia Milos but gave her the part. The only ones with acting talent is Khandi Alexander and Emily Proctor. God knows what they are going to do with them this season. I have to stop watching this show and tune in to Studio 60 as well. The writing is just getting plain laughable. CSI(Vegas) is very well written and acted and they have plausible storylines not driving around in Hummers in stylish clothing. That's the only reason globally this show does well because people from those countries actually think Americans are this way. Remember Miami Vice?? This is a just sad. I can't watch this show anymore.

I didn't like this episode at all, I thought it was just to much corniness, Ray Jr.'s pills didn't pop, after the other two's did, come on.
I did enjoy seeing Miles again thought, althought I totally miss Nim.

I am sorry but this show really is bad quality all around. This was my last time watching it. It's way to out there. people want a show w/good quality and this show is definitly the lowest. CSI Vegas is an outstanding show and I am looking forward to their premiere. The characters on CSI: Miami are the worst Horation and Delko are just god awful. It was wonderful to see the beautiful Yelina-Sofia Milos. it's too bad they got rid of her in the first place. Instead they bring the talentless and boring Boa Vista and her problems. With Yelina, she brought a mature intensity and sexiness. Poor Khandi Alexander never gets enough air time as well as talented Emily Procter. I am a girl and I cannot stand the Delko character at all-cut his airtime back. He cannot act!!

I usually like CSI Miami, although I think the best one still is CSI Las Vegas for the same reasons Michelle mentioned, but this episode was brutal. I was totally underwhelmed and it felt as though they were forcing stuff throughout the episode. No build up, no drama, nothing. After the first couple helicopter shots of Horatio on the mountain, I wanted to stop watching. We get it, he is high up there, thinking...or something. I can usually stand the writing and corny acting, but this one was brutal. You compare this to the great writing on Studio 60, and they are in completely different leagues.
If next weeks episode isn't better, I think I am going to stop watching. Here's hoping.

I have to agree with the others that said this show is awful. I hate the Horatio and Delko actors-horrible and overrated. Overdone storylines and going to Brazil was just a jumping the shark that TV shows often do when they are running out of ideas. Pretty soon we are going to see bad bed scenes and more explosions. What happened to solving normal murders? I think I am going to turn it off as well. Very little talent here aside from Emily Proctor and Sofia Milos. I miss Sofia Milos also. Wow-is she hot. Like a Rachel Welch, she brings a certain elegance. Seems she brings out what little talent David Caruso has. There was no chemistry beween him and Marisol (Delko's sister). Be honest, could Horatio in real life get a woman who looks like either of them? Red headed guys no what I am talking about. Delko is stupid and Jonothon Togo's character is about as useless as you can get. Boa Vista does nothing and nobody really cares about her character at all. I also can't wait for the CSI Vegas-they actually solve real murders that happen not revengful plots that would get any real CSI or policeman fired and stripped of his pension.

Does anyone know the songs used for this episode? In particular, I am looking for the opening song (not the theme song by The Who). Thanks.

Wait, you were the same guy who praised Dane Cook's Tourgasm, right? Now it all starts to come together...
CSI: Miami is a terrible show; it has some of the most terrible acting in the genre with incrediebly self-righteous moralizing non-believable story lines married to painfully expositional dialogue and the most inane computer interface fantasizing ever seen.
Honestly, if you love this show in a non-ironic sense, you have absolutely no concept of what makes good, intelligent and thoughtful TV.

I can't stand this show anymore!!! I decided to give it another chance and watch the premiere last night. Big mistake. Horrible everything. I wanted to push Horatio right off the cliff. While I am at it.. Delko too. He may be good looking but he is talentless. Wolfe and Boa Vista are dreadful and the writing gets worse every year. No more for me. I tivo'd Studio 60 and watched after. To my surprise, it was a breath of clean air. Very well written. CSI Vegas I just can't wait for the premiere. It's my favorite for the mere fact it's well written without all the flash. Like someone else said - CSI's don't drive around in Hummers and flashy clothes trying hard to look like models. No more CSI:Miami for me anymore either. I killed it in my tivo!!

Thank goodness there are others who are thinking like me. My god this show really is awful. Maybe they should have killed Horatio and Delko instead. I gave it one last chance and I am sick that I did. CSI Vegas is the bast and quality, quality, quality compared to CSI Miami. They get rid of their best players-Speedle and Yelina and put these bad acting, plastic people on. I jsut cannot watch anymore. I actually changed the channel and watched Wife Swap jsut to get some relief. I hope season 5 for them is their last. Bad TV, Bad Actors and jsut plain bad to watch.

IMO, this is the worst opener for any CSI season yet. I can't believe how far off the deep end this show has gone. The signs were clear in the last half of last season, and I was hoping Miami would come back strong and re-focused, but what a disappointment!

Ah, another Surface fan! Seeing Miles on-screen again actually made me want to see that show instead...

I watch CSI (vegas) for the mysteries they solve and while the timelines are compressed, it seems somewhat realistic. I watch CSI:Miami because it's like a comic-book version of the Las Vegas show. With that in mind, I enjoyed this episode, although I admit it was even more unrealistic than the average episode. I still had fun watching it and all the beautiful scenery almost made up for the extra cheesiness. Suspension of disbelief is a requirement for this show; if you can do that you can enjoy it...and I enjoy it plenty!

Terrible. I actually laughed out loud when Ray died (again) - the producers bend over backward to make it plausible that he didn't die two seasons ago, and they kill him off in the first twenty minutes. Ridonkulous. I enjoyed the scenes in the lab, however. But I don't know how much longer I can stand the Sunglasses of Justice.

I was so looking foreward to this seasons kick off. And then I saw the name of the episode. Uhoh. Rio? Can they make this work? I belived they could. I was very very wrong. Hope the new viewers don't get scared off, I would have been. Yes, we know you have a big budget, please get back to a little directing now, or we're in serious trouble here. The plot didn't work, the script was halfassed at best, and even the actors looked like they we're thinking: Seriously, are these my lines? Is this for real? Get back to the formula, it works, so stop screwing around with it.

Okay-for one thing, this show was far fetched from the get go but now it's just plain crazy. It's the worst I ever seen. Horatio and Delko should have died and ended it there. Hopefully this show will lose lots of viewers and just end. The premiere was my last time watching it. I hated everything about it. I agree with someone who said they jsut wanted to push Horation right off the cliff-well so did I. These actors are the worst. Enough is enough of this flash trash. I excited for CSI Vegas-they have alot more class than this show ever could.
