It looks like HBO's traditional sitcom experiment was short-lived. Lucky Louie, a multi-camera sitcom created and starring comedian Louis C.K., has been cancelled after its first 13-episode season. This TV Week article ("cleverly" titled "'Louie's' Luck Runs Out") mentions that the show was seen by about 1.3 million viewers on average; the season finale was seen by about that many people, which was 1.2 million less than the network's other summer Sunday offering, Entourage. It was an interesting try; imagine a sitcom with a live audience, living room and kitchen sets, etc., but with the freedom of language and subject matter that HBO provides. Guess not enough people bought into the experiment for HBO's liking. The president of HBO Entertainment claims she wants to work with Louis C.K. again, but there are no current plans for a new series. At least this might give Louis more material for his stand-up act.

It was horrible. Painfully bad. Sitcom style - 3 camera, live audience - MUST die. The format robs shows of humor. In Lucky Louie's case, the bad writing didn't help matters.

I agree it was a good experiment, and had a lot of very honest and insightful writing.
The acting was so-so, which was exacerbated by the 'live feel' - it reminded me of mediocre off-broadway.
I would like to see both Louis and Jimmy in some more traditional fare, as I think this format was really tough .

I saw this coming. Watching the show was painful - the laugh track was jarring and the tone was nasty. I can take nasty, but not nasty and not funny.

Nathan: There was no laugh track. It was a live audience as the article says
"imagine a sitcom with a live audience"

WHAT LAUGH TRACK? you idiot. they taped it in front of a live studio and then did NOT add any canned laugh crap in there.
i admit, the show as a little weak starting out, and Twinkletoes norton was the only reason i started watching it, but i did get hooked on the rest of the characters.. its too bad HBO shitcanned this like they do all their good programming.
i will be removing HBO from tv package.

Your right, my mistake. I would argue that the distinction doesn't really matter, as it was annoying either way :)

The problem is judging the show on the pilot. It did not start off well, but once it picked up steam it really was funny, and the story-lines were improving as well.
If I find out Lucky Louie is cancelled but Tourgasm is not, I think I'll die from massive cardiac failure.

ooda: I doubt there will be another Tourgasm. I think the show was planned just as a Tour DVD, but got picked up as a series. Unless they do another tour, there won't be another tourgasm (obviously)

Ben I hope you are serious, because I totally agree with you.. I can watch whiney kids any day of the week on TV why would I want to watch Entourage? Lucky Louie was a good show IMO, but different stokes for different folks I guess..

I loved the show. Maybe it was the shock value of all the language, but it was also the ability to talk about situations you can't on normal network tv. I'm not surprised it was cancelled, as most "outside the box" shows often are.

Stop making the show into a martar.
It sucked and that is why it got killed.
The writing sucked, the acting sucked, the "jokes" sucked it just plain sucked.
It was a fantastic idea that got implemented very poorly.
I'd like to see HBO try this again only this time they should try and pass on all the suck factor.
"Let's see, last time we tried this we sucked and it didn't work out, this time lets not suck and see if that is any better..."

Seriously, how can you cancel a show that dedicates an entire episode to the fact that parents discover that their own child is an "asshole"? I loved this show! It wasn't that the experiment went wrong. I think that HBO didn't promote it the right way.

Well, crap.
My wife and I really enjoyed this show. I liked the way things worked out in a more realistic way and how these people were not always so confident and upbeat. the wifes character was really the best female depiction on the tube. I am sad to see it go. I thought it brought a lot of fresh stuff to a very tired formula.

THIS SHOW WAS BRILLIANT!
My endorsement is typically the kiss of death for any TV program, so I expected this... but its unfortunate that non-traditional series can't even survive on NON-AD-SUPPORTED subscription cable services.
For those dreamers who thought series like Arrested Development could see a re-birth on an outlet like Showtime... this is cancellation is an emphatic "NO WAY".

The only thing daring about this show was the adult language. In its production value, writing, casting, and everything else I can think of, it looked and felt like the machine-stamped sitcoms of 30 years ago. I kept expecting to see Schneider from "One Day at a Time" walk in. Maybe in one episode, Louie would run away to join the Marines and he'd meet CPO Sharkey. It was unpleasant to watch, and it was plain its creators thought "drab and coarse" was somehow edgy when in fact it was just depressing. I see Pamela Adlon has a lot of voice work in her resume; I like her, and I hope she keeps working. Everyone else, I expect to see recycled in other unimaginative projects sooner or later.

i didn't really have much faith in hbo because they already canceled my favorite show last year (carnivale). they seem to be on a roll w/ canceling shows that i like now. in the end, hbo is no different than any other network--not willing to show respect for creativity.

This was by far the best of HBO's new series since The Soprano's... it's a shame that HBO couldn't give it a 2nd season to see if the writing got better or it drew more fans.
I liked the writing, and the use of profanity seemed to be appropriate given the characters and situations they were in. The show did have a "community theater" feel to it, but that was actually appealing.
It was at least better than the unscripted "Curb Your Enthusiasm" - which is what happens when you take a show about nothing and then have actors improv all scenes.
What we need is a bringbacklouie.com site so we can convince HBO it's worth it.
