Vivekachudamani :51: A father has got his sons and others to free him from his debts, but he has got none but himself to remove his bondage.

The long-lost father of the Caffee clan shows up to make his miserable family even more miserable.

Pete's still trying to help Eileen along with AA, even holding private sessions for her, since she won't go to a public one. Pete's a little too soft-hearted of late in his management of the teen street dealers for Michael's taste. After a lecture from the elder Caffee brother, Pete falls back off the wagon himself again. Hm, looks like this'll end badly for both Pete and Eileen.

Rose sees a dead kid, a drug dealer, on the street, after he's been murdered. "This neighborhood's going to hell," she tells a friend. An immigrant herself, Rose, without a touch of self-awareness, blames immigration for bringing in drugs -- not knowing yet that this hit was performed by her favorite son Michael. When Rose goes on and on about the shame of drugs in the neighborhood and the need for a block watch -- all while oblivious to her son's involvement in the trade -- the glances exchanged between the other women at the beauty parlor are priceless. But soon she is at the point she can no longer deny to herself what Michael is, and what he does for a living.

I can't stand Rose, but even less likable, is the Caffee brothers' father. Michael and Tommy make a road trip to pay off their Dad for his half of the family house (he and Rose never divorced), and we quickly learn how much the brothers hate their father. He's a drunk, a gambler, a philanderer, and general reprobate. But before he takes their payoff money, he cuts the brothers to the quick with his cruel understanding of their dynamic. Rose always liked Michael best, no matter how hard Tommy tried to please her. Then he tells Tommy that he should hire Freddie Cork to snap Michael's neck then run for governor. Things sorta go down hill from there. For a moment, looks like the brothers have found some common ground, in hating him.

That is very short lived, however. Tommy returns home and finds his daughter, Mary Rose, working at Michael's store. He is furious. "No secrets in this family,"says Tommy. Which has got to be both the funniest and the saddest thing statement uttered the entire series. Mary Rose reveals that she is not the only one with secrets, which makes for one of the most painful family confrontations yet, though Tommy still is not ready to confront the truth about Eileen. Nor is Eileen able to stop lying to Tommy.

There's a fair amount truth telling -- long overdue in this dysfuntional family -- by the end of this episode, but still a lot of secrets left, for next week's season finale.
