Yup, ol' Zephram Cochrane/Stretch Cunningham/Dudley Smith himself will play Kiefer Sutherland's father on the upcoming season of FOX's 24.
The story is a more personal one this season. Instead of saving the world again, Jack Bauer will be trying to save himself. Also joining the cast is Eddie Izzard, who will play a bad guy. The new president this season? President David Palmer's brother, played by DB Woodside.
I haven't seen one episode of this show (I was an Alias fan), but if this season is a self-contained story where I don't have to know what happened exactly in the past few seasons, maybe I'll give it a shot. What exactly do I need to know as a first time 24 viewer (besides the fact that Jack's a spy, his wife was murdered in the first season, and that he was captured at the end of last season)?

Yeah, that would have been interestinging. I wonder what they're father-son relationship is like in the real world, though. Maybe not strong enough to work together? ;)

You can get from one point in Los Angeles to any other in 15 minutes flat. "Sonuvabitch" is an all purpose term as well.

24 Essential Knowledge
1. Jack's daughter Kim (Elisha Cuthbert) is estranged from her father, as he has been responsible for the death or appendage removal of everyone she loves. She left with her older boyfriend in the midst of Day 5 to escape the carnage of the terrorist attacks.
2. The President Wayne Palmer (DB Woodside) of Day 6 is the old political advisor and brother of slain President David Palmer (Dennis Haysbert). Due to the conspiracy last year that took out President Logan (and exposing him for the rat who was responsible for David Palmer's death), Wayne has become the face of truth. Their unseen sister will be involved this year as well.
3. Only 5 people have survived all 5 days of 24 (not meaning they were in them all but still...) They are: Jack and Kim Bauer, Mike Novic (political aide for any party that will talk to him), Agent Aaron Pierce (Presidental security and in love with ex-First lady Martha Logan), and CTU-er Milo who hasn't been seen since he disappeared halfway thru the 1st season.
4. In Day 4, Jack snuck into the Chinese Consolate to find some information, leading to the death of a Chinese political figure via Jack's gun. This led to Jack disappearing in between Day 4 and 5, and why he was kidnapped at the end of last season. It's all about the vengenace.
5. Jack's Girl Friday is Chloe O'Brian. A CTU techie who is smarter and more scowly than your average lady. She has a deep-seeded love for Jack, as he has saved her life numerous times. Chloe brought her ex-husband Morris last year to help in a time of crisis--a revelation to all that thought Chloe would never trust a man that much... but giving us hope Jack might indeed find a woman he could trust as well.
6. CTU People of importance:
*Bill Buchanan - head of CTU
*Curtis Manning - head of field ops (aka BAD ASS!)
*Karen Hayes - government official, worked as interim head of CTU last year, will now be an assistant to President Wayne Palmer.
7. Jack's on and off girlfriend, Audrey, discovered Jack had been kidnapped last year. The actress (Kim Raver) has signed onto "The Nine", limiting her exposure this year on the show. But, it is noteworthy that Audrey has lasted longer than any other girlfriend or wife that Jack has ever had on the show. Day 1 - he had his wife and ex-lover/spy Nina (both deceased now). Day 2 - Jack found a new love, Marie Warner, who had been involved in exposing her terrorist sister. They broke up in between seasons. Day 3 - Jack secretly started a relationship with a Mexican druglord's wife, Claudia, who was shot in the head trying to escape. Day 4 - Jack was together with Audrey, daughter of the Secretary of State. Day 5 - While on the lam, Jack hooks up with maternal Diane Huxley, but she is put off knowing he has lied about his life... putting her and her son in danger.
Hmm... I think that is all that matters for now.

The only other thing I would add is that I want Jack Bauer's cell phone and PDA. Apparently they both have batteries that never die. Oh, and CTU can tap into any computer/sattelite and instantly communicate with it to perform diagnostics (sounds a little like Microsoft..)

Correction, the Chinese Consul was killed by Chinese forces shooting at Jack as he was escaping, IIRC.
@TC
Don't do it, man. You will regret it. Neflix the first five days. Totally worth it. Wait until next summer and review them for Retro Squad, then watch Day 6. You will not regret it. Its so easy to watch four episodes without even realizing it.

You need to know how to click the 'add to queue' button on Netflix.

I was/am a *HUGE* Alias fan, and I enjoy "24" ALOT. But, just like with Alias, in order to truely enjoy the show you have to throw out all logic and reasoning. Then you'll enjoy the show a LOT more. And it'll help tolerate the "We've lost our ONLY lead!" line that's uttered each. and. every. episode. ;)

OH yes! One last important note:
There is a deadly, uber-sexy bisexual assassin named Mandy (Mia Kirshner) who started the show by blowing up a plane, tried to assassinate President David Palmer with a toxic handshake, then resurfaced again to torture a classic CTU couple, Tony and Michelle, before Curtis (with a haymaker to the face) and Jack arrested her to find Day 4's main villian, who she had been working with. Expect Mandy to resurface this year... she is Nina 2.0

Actually, it's Kim's fault that Miguel (her boyfriend in season 2) had to have his leg amputated (lost it?) when Kim set fire to the police van they were in (after being arrested) that rolled down a hill. Rick (season 1) was shot, but lived. Chase (season 3) lost his hand, but was having it reattached, as per dialogue from Jack).

I dunno. While it may seem like the obvious choice, I think ultimately it would be the thing that would make the show jump the shark. I would be constantly reminded of the real life father/son connection and that would erode my perception of 'Jack Bauer'.
Plus, James Cromwell is badass, as anyone who's seen LA Confidential knows. I can totally buy him as Jack's dad.
Random factoid: Kiefer was in a failed TV pilot for an 'LA Confidential' series as Kevin Spacey's (!!!) character...

The messenger bag of death rules! They should market that as the must have accessory for any would be badass! It contains guns, knives, communication equipment, decoders to break through security alarms, bomb defusing devices, and extra MacGuyver materials such as string and paperclips. Jack never travels from home without it.
