Stargate Atlantis: McKay & Mrs. Miller

The brains in action
(S03E06) Ok... Meredith? Rodney's first name is Meredith? What did he do to anger the writers and how can we make it happen again? McKay is so energetic and blatantly emotional that he's become one of my favorites to watch on screen. The combination of plot devices - two Rodneys Meredith's and an estranged sister made for an entertaining Atlantis.

Watch out for the intro - whatever you do don't take a sip of wine. You'll end up snorting it up your nose. It burns, trust me.

The introduction was great - having kids myself I know how hard it is to find a pen when I need it. I doubt my daughter would stare at me, she'd be putting her own painting on the wall. (or just painting the wall)

For a guest actor, Kate Hewlett did a great job. I completely believed that those two are related... It turns out that she actually is David Hewlett's (McKay's) sister. When Carter makes fun of their Canadian 'Sorry' she was serious!

Aside from the whole destroying the universe all over again issue, the setup served to highlight McKay's character flaws. He's so brisk most of the time that I forget that he's actually friends with his team. Seeing him talk to Sheppard almost seemed out of place - we just don't see him do that very often.

I'm thinking that they decided to really bring out the characters in Atlantis for this season. Weir was sent on a mind trip, Ronon had his fight to the death, Sheppard was tortured til he looked like Ronald Reagan, Rodney was emotionally abused... Who's next?

Ninety-five percent of the time, the two McKays were edited together very well. Given how condescending McKay is, It was great to get some dirt on him. On the few shots that were edited to show both McKay's together the effects processing was a little weak. That was only time that it bugged me. I think they blended very well because many of the other shots with other characters included the over the shoulder/angled tricks that are used to make one actor look like two.

I poked around on imdb a bit and discovered that David wrote and directed a film called A Dog's Breakfast - get this, it has Kate, Christopher Judge (Teal'c), Rachel Luttrel (Tayla) and Paul McGillion (Beckett) in it!

Thumbs up on this episode, just avoid sipping your drink at the wrong time!
