(S03E09) To finish up their stay in France, the designers were challenged to create a dress employing various couture methods, including hand-sewing, beading, and embroidery (learn more about haute couture here). Although their budget was considerably higher ($375 American), their time limit of two days left everyone in crunch-time from the get-go.Their French host, Catherine Malandrino, scored their designs in Paris and the regular panel of judges (along with guest Richard Tyler) did a traditional runway evaluation back in New York.
Follow along by checking out the designs on "Rate the Runway".
Kayne: Early in the process, Tim stopped by to voice his concerns over Kayne's "no, seriously, it's not a pageant dress, it's haute couture!" outfit. It was loud and bright and a bit too much, but Kayne thought it was perfect. Kayne, you fool! Tim is right! He's always right (except for that one time, with Bradley in "A Designer's Best Friend")! When will they learn?
Uli: Oh, Uli, how I love thee. She and Michael are the sweetest people on the show. I have yet to find a reason to dislike either of them. Her outfit for this week involved no prints, but it was still distinctly hers. That's the way to do it! I hate it when designers refuse to try something new just because they're afraid of sacrificing their personal stylings. It's entirely possible to try something new without abandoning everything about yourself (Jeffrey also demonstrated this).
Jeffrey: [WINNER] I appreciated the fact that Jeffrey's motivation was to be the first Runway contestant to win with immunity. It was nothing malicious, none of that "everyone else sucks and I should always win" business. I guess the lack of Angela's presence did something good for the guy. His couture dress was really something wild. I didn't like the strips of fabric hanging off the shoulders in the back, but everything else was pretty cool. The judges loved how it was bright and fun but still reflected Jeffrey's more alternative style. Really deserved the win, I think.
Laura: [ALMOST OUT] Whoa, belly! It's strange to think that her pregnancy was just revealed a few episode ago because she's already three months along. And, ironically enough, as she's preparing to bring another life into this world, she made the craziest funeral dress I've ever seen.
Michael: I totally agreed with the judges when it came to the weird little bunny ears at the top of the dress. Overall, I thought it was a stunning outfit... as long as the chest region was ignored. Oh, and as for the egg-throwing incident, the kid probably sensed the Americans coming and took action. I'm tellin' you, the French are still pissed about Freedom Toast.
Vincent: [OUT] After I finished watching this episode, I felt strange. Something was out of place. Oh. Oh, yeah. I wasn't flailing my arms around in fury and yelling at the closest person next to me, every other word an expletive... I've never felt this empty after an episode of Project Runway 3... I've become to used to bitching about Vincent after every episode... I've grown accustomed to his faaaace. Ahem. Yeah. Vincent really lucked out by coming this far. This week's outfit was just as shitty as any other week's, so I don't understand why the judges looked so shocked all of a sudden. Did it really take Catherine Malandrino's scores to open their eyes? C'mon. Oh, and Vincent said "It turns me on" again and I promptly started bleeding from the eyes. What a mess.

When did cotton become haute couture?
Uli should have won not just for her dress but for doing something different after the judges ragged on her last week.
I liked Kayne's dress so either I have no taste or my tv screen was real generous.
Thank God, Vincent is gone. Can Jeffrey be next please?

Project Runway has become to predictable in the way it foreshadows victory and/or defeat. As soon as I heard Jeffrey say he wanted to be the first designer with immunity to win a challenge, I knew he was going to win. Could they be a little less obvious?
Also, I thought Kayne's dress was the second-best of the lot. But Kayne must be bashed and Uli must be praised. It's the way the show works.
After the greatness that was Season 2, this season has been a big disappointment. The only thing that keeps me interested is the greatness of Michael.

Ha, I like your comment about bleeding from the eyes when Vincent said, "It turns me on". He always thinks of the dumbest things to say in defense of his designs. Yeah, it will be sad to see him go. As annoying as he can be, his was integral.

So if Vincent were force fed Viagra do you think his designs would get better or worse?

most satisfying episode of the season! hooray! Jeffery got another deserving win, and... Vincent is finally out! for the longest time i have been hating the show for kicking Allison out over this numb-nut! i'm sure Tim Gunn was thrilled about Vincent being kicked out (listen to his podcast, Tim Gunn hates Vincent's guts) Looking at the preview, i hope Laura don't let her crazy hormone distract her. even though i never really like her designs, i think she's so brave for being on this show. Finally, that French chick designer Catherine Malandrino is my favorite guest judge! i loved her comment on Vincent's dress, "no, no, no, no, no." love it! and look how funny it was when Vincent was just sucking up to her. classic Vincent, what a suck-up. now that he and Angela are out, the show can actually be a real fashion competition now.

Finally! I was getting scared for a while that he would continue on, especially with the news story that broke before the season began about the PR3 model who was hit by a bus.

Well it took long enough for Vincent to get out! Have you ever noticed that the designs that "turn him on" are usually his worst? Shows something about his taste...
This is the first time i've ever seen a pinic cloth that went through the shredder win on project runway! (and i hope it's the last!)
I felt sorry for Michael because it was his first time making a couture dress. He did pretty good for his first time. (except for the bunny ears.)
i thought Kayne's was good except for that pagentry like corset top. I really thought the bottom flowed really good. But the corset fitted top was so much like a pagent dress!
Can we see anyhting different from Laura than a dress thats top is open al the way down to the belly? I would really like to see something a little more creative and somthing different from her. I mean it's the same thing every challenge!
Uli's i thought was beautiful, and it was different was her usual wild print/pattern outfits after the last challenge when the judges said to "show something differnt" and "tone it down". It still said uli and looked terrific. I definately think she should have won.

Dani, ha ha ha ha that was a great line, I guess my tv is Kayne friendly also, perhaps a bit tres gay? I did love the flow of his dress and the velvet touches on the bodice.
My friend is hoping perhaps if Jerrey and laura could trade wardrobes, it would double both their outfits to 2 a piece, and give the rest of us a break from, laura in black and white and jeffrey in red and black.

i am sooooo glad vincent is out. the moment he put that basket on his model's head he instantly became my #1 most hated designer. and the trash episode???? HOW DID HE MANAGE TO STAY ON WITH THAT "DRESS"??!?! i dont get it. jeffrey really surprised me this time by making something that didn't look like a derelict made it (which is i guess why his trash dress was so good!).
Im waiting for laura to go. her designs are very nice and well made, TRUE. im a huge fan of classic styles and black and white, but where's the innovation? can she think of ANYTHING that i haven't already seen in every ann taylor/robinsons may/banana republic store my entire life? it really bothers me that they keep her on. she doesn't deserve to be here, she needs to go home and take care of herself and her family. and im sorry, but where is the couture in uli's dress? it's very pretty, yes, but it's nothing special.

Am I the only one who worries that Vincent got kept on the show by the producers, not the judges? If you watch the credits at the end of the show, they state quite plainly that the decisions on the runway are impacted by the scores AND producer input -- Vincent was so grotesque, I could only think he was kept around because he was so hateable... and nuts. I truly think the dude is nuts. There's creative and there's nuts, and he is nuts. A literal basket case!!!

Dear God,
Gail Here.
I know it's been awhile since we have talked but I just wanted to ask you for a few favors, please. If you could see your way to letting us acheive world peace, things aren't looking too good down here right now, I would really appreciate it. Winning the lottery would be nice, too. Oh yeah, and please get rid of Jeffery on Project Runway.
Thanks and keep up the good work.
Amen
