I had completely forgotten about the Comedy Central movie Windy City Heat, a film that chronicled an elaborate practical joke in which two friends convinced their aspiring but not especially talented pal Perry Caravello that they've secured a role for him as a hardboiled private eye named "Stone Fury" in a movie called, of course, "Windy City Heat." I have only vague recollections of the film, and if memory serves I wasn't able to make it through the whole thing before giving up on it. When I found out an uncensored director's cut would be coming out on DVD on September 26, I must say I was somewhat surprised, since I heard very little about it when it aired back in 2003, and even less about it after it faded away. The movie features Don Barris and Tony Barbieri as the masterminds behind a practical joke ten years in the making, and appearances by Jimmy Kimmel, Dane Cook, Tom Kenny, and Adam Carolla, among others. I have been trying my hand at Stand Up Comedy and a few weeks ago I did an open mic and Perry was there. I had never heard of Windy City Heat but he kept going on and on about it. He's clearly mentally ill and the whole thing made me kind of sad. It seems he still beleives it was real.

It's odd, because when you first start watching it, it seems really cruel. Then the more you get to know Perry, the more you start to think he sort of deserves it. Like how he thinks he's the smartest person in the room no matter where he goes, how he is insanely creepy around women, and how he ignores every single clue that things may not be on the level. The producer's name was John Quincy Adams. The Japanese financier's name is Hiroshima Nagasaki. Even when a CLEARLY fake Charlton Heston starts running around his trailer and screaming, he doesn't catch on. And he realizes it's not Charlton Heston, too! At a certain point, the blame has to shift to the victim of the prank, though I hesitate to even call him a victim since it has probably been the best thing ever to happen to him in his life.

I don't know whether I laughed harder when Perry Caravello was "Playing" Stone Fury ; or when he was himself .While the genius of the whole concept is evident , and there are many times when you'd like to wring somebody's neck..watching the insanity..what you don't expect , is to feel sadness for poor Perry , because you know at some point his bubble is going to burst .
At first , not being able to fathom why apparently mentally-ill Tony Barbieri is on a screen anywhere in the world-you soon realize that he is needed , if for nothing more , than to prove Perry Caravello is the "Star" .
While I don't go in for "reality TV", I thought the premise of this film was ingenuous . Everything & almost everyone "fit".
I think , in the end , the joke was on everyone else but Perry Caravello , because he was truly the "Star" after all .
